Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The scalar theory of grating is used to analyze the energy of grating period groove error, the effect of core components of grating ruling machines such as screw and worm gear on the stray light and ghost line. Based on the analysis of spectral performance, the ruling machine compensation system is optimized, the ruling quality of the grating is improved.

Even though, there is some details need to be noticed. First, some mistakes is occurred in the describing, for example, figure 2(a) is a mistakes in label, figure 7 show the result, but the calculated equation is not given exactly. Second: the figure 8 is the distribution of the period error. The describe about the data is absence, which is essential to show the result of figure 9.

The analysis is useful and interesting in improving the quality of ruling grating. I recommend the article highly, but the content need to optimize and refine.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors sought to expand their earlier published work (doi.org/10.1364/AO.444034). The novelty has worn off. However, as a conventional experimental work has some merit. The paper has some major issues that must be carefully addressed before considering it for publication in Applied sciences. I have listed my concerns below:

 1. This is a sentence: "The scalar theory of grating line function can describe the physical phenomenon of light source by grating interference and diffraction and is used to express the complex amplitude distribution of illumination source on diffraction screen under the action of diffraction grating, which can give the information of position and intensity distribution of diffracted light, so as to analyze the effect of line error on grating ghost line intensity and stray light".

The manuscript is full of long and vague sentences. Before everything, the language should be deeply revised and modified.

2. In the Introduction section, the author just described their earlier work without providing information about the research gap in the literature. They should explain the main aim of the present study, mentioning the steps they took and how the remainder of the paper is organized.

3. Effect of screw error on grating spectral performance is not properly described and should be discussed in detail.

4. Figures 5,7 and 9 have poor quality and should be revised.
