Cover Story: Loneliness is an experience to which we can all relate. For many, chronic loneliness is strongly related to feeling like you do not matter. This feeling has been called “anti-mattering”. In this study, we propose that if loneliness and anti-mattering are indeed separate constructs, they will relate differently to a third variable. For the third variable, we chose self-reported measures of four distinct humor styles (affiliative, aggressive, self-deprecating, and self-enhancing). The results indicated a moderate correlation between loneliness and anti-mattering, but also similar profiles with humor styles. We discuss the implications of these similarities in terms of how we understand loneliness and how humor may be an indicator of psychosocial functioning. View this paper.
