Cover Story: The poultry industry, vital for global protein production, faces challenges on a constant basis from infectious diseases. Pathogens like Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, and Campylobacter can spread quickly within flocks and are easily disseminated along the poultry value chain. Poor biosecurity and hygiene measures lead to the contamination of meat and eggs with Salmonella and Campylobacter, which are a source of foodborne illness for humans. Rapid detection is crucial to minimize these risks. Biosensors offer a solution, with smart sensors used for monitoring poultry health indicators in real time. This review examines recent advances in biosensors for poultry disease management, focusing on their role in enabling early detection, faster response, and supporting sustainable and safer poultry production practices.
