Cover Story: Piglet welfare on commercial farms is negatively impacted by the routine husbandry procedure of surgical castration. The Piglet grimace scale (PGS) is a method of acute pain assessment that has quantified changes in facial expression induced by surgical castration and tail docking. However, validation of the PGS and other grimace scales alike can be limited by subjective scoring methods. This study aimed to evaluate and refine established PGS methods through the application of 3D-landmark-based geometric morphometrics. Three-dimensional optical systems may provide the ability to objectively identify indicators of pain necessary for the development of proper pain management and the improvement of piglet welfare on-farm. View this paper
