Cover Story: In 2015, a review investigating the effect of exercise for reducing the anxiety people feel at a specific point in time (state anxiety) concluded there was a small but variable effect, and there was a need to improve the methodological quality of research. In this updated review of randomised controlled trials published since 2015, we investigated whether these conclusions remain and if an optimal exercise stimulus to reduce state anxiety can be provided. Our results found that anxiety was reduced from pre-to-post exercise in 53% of the exercise stimuli employed. Within these effective studies, no clear pattern emerged for the exercise stimulus most likely to reduce anxiety, suggesting that any exercise is likely better than none. Further, while study quality has improved, limitations continue to undermine our understanding of the exercise–anxiety relationship. View this paper
