Cover Story: The outer space environment poses several health hazards for astronauts that spend extended amounts of time in challenging environments. One factor of particular interest is that astronauts are prone to infections from bacteria that reside both on and in the astronauts’ body, which involves a whole range of bacteria that normally play an integral role in keeping the human host healthy. In this study, we show that the microgravity component of space can be replicated here on Earth through technological advancement and as a result, it can cut the cost and reduce the logistical difficulty and limited access challenges that are inherent to real space investigations and might provide a basis for investigations and discoveries to safeguard astronauts from the harsh outer space environment.
