Cover Story: This work constructs a new mathematical model describing the vibrations of a beam that comes in contact with an obstacle situated below its right end. The obstacle reaction takes into account the energy dissipation during the contact process, making the use of the restitution coefficient unnecessary. The model is studied computationally for different values of obstacle stiffness and damping. The simulations illustrate how the beam’s penetration and vibrations differ in soft vs. stiff obstacle environments. The results are useful for vibration and noise control and component interactions in engineering settings when collisions or repetitive contacts occur. View this paper
