Cover Story: The application of a multi-methodical approach based on IR and Raman spectroscopy, electron microprobe analysis, selective sorption and chromatography of gaseous ignition products, and single-crystal X-ray structural analysis to a series of sodalite-type minerals with contrastingly different chemical compositions made it possible to reveal two potential new mineral species with the idealized formulae Na7(Si6Al6O24)F–·nH2O and Na7(Si6Al6O24)(S3–)·H2O. Both minerals are characterized by high contents of CO2 molecules in zeolite channels. The highest content of carbon dioxide (0.46 molecules per formula unit) was detected in a sodalite-type mineral from the Malobystrinskoe lazurite deposit, Baikal Lake area, which belongs to the haüyne–lazurite solid-solution series. The composition of extraframework components in sodalite group minerals reflects activity of different volatile components in mineral-forming media. View this paper
