Cover Story: This paper sheds light on the production of Egyptian blue, an artificial material widely used as a pigment in the ancient Mediterranean world, based on the examination of pellets from the late Hellenistic workshop of the island of Kos (Greece). Eighteen samples were obtained from pellets of various textures and tones of blue and examined via optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy, providing insight into the composition of the material on the level of the single grain. The results shed light on the firing procedure and possible sources for raw materials. Two process to produce light blue pigments was identified, illustrating the highly specialized knowledge of the ancient craftspeople. View this paper
