April-1 2021 - 189 articles

Cover Story: This study introduces a new generation of 3D-bioprinted nanoparticle-functionalized hyperelastic bone scaffold systems, with enhanced bacteriostatic properties, and a complex, porous, and customized structure. This platform was used as a damage-specific implant with significantly diminished risk of infection or rejection to repair non-healing bone fractures. The bioprinted constructs successfully repaired a critical-sized femoral bone defect in the rat model over a 12-week time course. The grafts showed rapid integration with host tissue, ossification, and growth of new bone. These results suggest a great translational potential for 3D-bioprinted bone scaffolds, laden with functional nanoparticles, for hard-tissue engineering applications. View this paper.
