Cover Story: Hydrogen bonding-generating events, including host–guest interactions at material surfaces, should open the door to the next generation of functional materials due to the promise of selective molecular recognition. In this context, we present the novel crown ether installation protocol which realized the attachment of crown ethers onto fluoropolymer surfaces based on the combination of radiation-induced graft polymerization and a subsequent surface Kabachnik–Fields three-component reaction. The obtained crown ether-tethered fluoropolymer films exhibited an ammonium cation-capturing ability, owing to the host–guest interactions (i.e., hydrogen bonding) between the surface-anchored crown ether molecules and the guest ammonium cations.
