April-1 2019 - 155 articles

Cover Story: The UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is an emerging remote sensing technology in the cryosphere community. To test its performance in sea ice study, researchers from Beijing Normal University conducted three sortie flights in Prydz Bay during the 33rd Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition. A cost-effective UAV model called the Polar Hawk-III was developed to adapt to such an extreme environment. The first comprehensive photogrammetric assessment without ground control was implemented. The results show that the precision distribution over subdued and featureless morphology was well under control. The UAV model was capable of revealing the fine-scale surface features on sea ice. Following the guidance of the present study, UAVs could become a promising tool in future polar research and expedition. The Issue cover shows the working scenes in-field. View this paper.
