Cover Story: Cartilage conduction (CC) is a newly suggested form of sound transmission. In Japan, a new type of hearing aid has been developed using CC and has been available in clinical practice since 2017. This review article describes the overview of CC hearing aids, and explains their benefits and indication, based on the many previous studies on CC perception and CC hearing aids. According to the results, CC hearing aids are considered a good option for compensating hearing loss in ears with canal stenosis or aural atresia in both bilateral and unilateral cases. CC hearing aids are not currently considered the first choice in patients with a canal-open ear. Nevertheless, they can provide significant benefits in specific cases, such as continuous otorrhea.
