Cover Story: The COVID-19 outbreak represents an unexpected, new and global pandemic that caught the scien-tific and health international community unprepared. We are currently in the middle of a storm without any gold standards in terms of pharmaceutical pre-vention, diagnosis, therapy and, most of all, without any idea about if, when, and how it will end. So far, the pandemic has mainly hit high-income countries with devastating effects not only in terms of health but also social and economic, but it is not clear what will happen in low-income countries. This narrative review provides an insight into the COVID-19 current situation and represents a pic-ture of the current state-of-the-art in terms of public health impact, pathophysiology and clinical mani-festations, diagnosis, case management, emergency response and preparedness.
