Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Ecosystem Services and Human Well-Being in China’s Karst Regions: An Integrated Carbon Flow-Based Assessment

The relationship between ecosystem services (ESs) and human well-being (HWB) is a central issue of sustainable development. However, current research often relies on qualitative frameworks or indicator-based assessments, limiting a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between natural environment and human acquisition, which still needs to be strengthened. As an element transferred in the natural–society coupling system, carbon can assist in characterizing the dynamic interactions within coupled human–natural systems. Carbon, as a fundamental element transferred across ecological and social spheres, offers a powerful lens to characterize these linkages. This study develops and applies a novel analytical framework that integrates carbon flow as a unifying metric to quantitatively assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of the land use and land cover change (LUCC)–ESs–HWB nexus in Guizhou Province, China, from 2000 to 2020. The results show that: (1) Ecosystem services in Guizhou showed distinct trends from 2000 to 2020: supporting and regulating services declined and then recovered, and provisioning services steadily increased, while cultural services remained stable but varied across cities. (2) Human well-being generally improved over time, with health remaining stable and the HSI rising across most cities, although security levels fluctuated and remained low in some areas. (3) The contribution of ecosystem services to human well-being peaked in 2010–2015, followed by declines in central and northern regions, while southern and western areas maintained or improved their levels. (4) Supporting and regulating services were positively correlated with HWB security, while cultural services showed mixed effects, with strong synergies between culture and health in cities like Liupanshui and Qiandongnan. Overall, this study quantified the coupled dynamics between ecosystem services and human well-being through a carbon flow framework, which not only offers a unified metric for cross-dimensional analysis but also reduces subjective bias in evaluation. This integrated approach provides critical insights for crafting spatially explicit land management policies in Guizhou and offers a replicable methodology for exploring sustainable development pathways in other ecologically fragile karst regions worldwide. Compared with conventional ecosystem service frameworks, the carbon flow approach provides a process-based, dynamic mediator that quantifies biogeochemical linkages in LUCC–ESs–HWB systems, which is particularly important in fragile karst regions. However, we acknowledge that further empirical comparison with traditional ESs metrics could strengthen the framework’s generalizability. Full article

This essay examines two hybrid poetic texts that emerged from a period of feminist activism in U.S. and global poetry communities from 2014 to 2017: the collaboratively, anonymously authored “No Manifesto” (2015) and the radically revised second edition of the book of poetry and visual art YOU DA ONE by Jennif(f)er Tamayo. “No Manifesto” and YOU DA ONE embrace the hybrid tactics of collectivity, incongruity, and nonresolution as ways of protesting sexism and sexual violence in poetry communities. Synthesizing theories of hybridity from poetry criticism as well as immigrant and borderlands studies, the essay defines hybridity as a literary representation of cultural positions forcefully imposed upon subjects. Born out of the domination of sexual and state violence, hybridity marks the wound that remakes the subject, who develops strategies for resistance. By refusing to play by the rules of poetic or social discourse—the logics of domination that would have them be singular, cohesive, and compliant—Tamayo and the authors of “No Manifesto” insist on alternative ways of performing activism, composing literature, and entering the public sphere. These socially engaged, hybrid poetic texts demonstrate the power of the collective to disrupt the social and literary status quo. Full article

Expatriates and missionaries in China played a significant role in the development and transformation of Chinese architecture in the Late Qing period. However, a systematic comparison of their discourses and proposals on Chinese architecture has been hindered by a lack of historical literature and the complexities of fragmented data and methodologies. This article examines and compares the two most influential non-native newspapers: The North-China Daily News in English, edited by expatriates, and The Review of the Times in Chinese, founded by missionaries. By analyzing these two groups’ discourses and narratives on Chinese architecture, the study explores their similarities and distinctions, revealing the characteristics, strategies, attitudes, interests, and opinions of expatriates, missionaries, and non-missionaries in China on the transmission and transformation of architecture knowledge. The research highlights differences in their preferences for specific text types, subjects, and themes on Chinese architecture, as well as their attitudes toward native and foreign architecture, professional education, and architecture regulations in individual and official spheres. Despite these differences, overlapping characteristics and proposals existed among the three groups. The study further investigates the underlying reasons and mechanisms for their similar or divergent mindsets and behavioral patterns, drawing on human responsive psychology rather than relying on postcolonial or cultural theories. In recent years, the concept of the commons has gained relevance across academic, legal and civic spheres as an alternative framework for managing shared resources. Rooted in Elinor Ostrom’s seminal work on collective governance, contemporary debates on the commons increasingly challenge the traditional binary of private versus public ownership by foregrounding the social function of these resources and the role of their communities in their administration. Urban commons, in particular, have emerged as dynamic spaces of experimentation, where local actors reclaim underutilised or abandoned assets and activate them through bottom-up processes of care, cultural production, and civic innovation. While international literature provides a robust conceptual foundation for understanding commoning practices, their practical implementation mostly depends on local specificities, such as legal and social contexts. Despite the important milestone of the Rodotà Commission’s proposal (2007) and Law 168/2017 on collective domains, the Italian regulatory framework remains highly fragmented, with regional and municipal regulations pioneering policies and practices frequently driven by community-led efforts to redefine the use and governance of public assets. This paper contributes to the growing debate on urban commons by investigating how, since 2011, experiences of collaborative care of the commons in Southern Italy have rekindled interest in the issue raised in 2007, highlighting a strong connection between the regulatory and social dimensions of these processes. The study develops a methodological framework—the COMmons Places ASSessment (COMPASS)—to evaluate the enabling conditions and governance dynamics of these processes. The research specifically focuses on five case studies in the Campania region, where diverse actors have mobilised to reclaim and transform public heritage through cultural, social, and creative activities. From the results, insights on collective management practices emerge potentials and criticalities of the analysed governance, as well as of the designed decision-making process and their effectiveness for the open, participatory, and sustainable management of urban commons. Isoforms of prostate transmembrane protein, androgen induced 1 (PMEPA1), are regulated either by TGF-beta or AR activation and provide negative loop-regulation of these signaling pathways. High levels of PMEPA1 protein have been observed in various tumor types, including prostate, bladder, colorectal cancers, and glioblastoma. Direct oncogenic role of PMEPA1 in hepatocellular carcinoma has been recently shown on an animal model. New studies also indicate an upregulation of PMEPA1 in tumor-associated immune and stromal cells; however, its specific role in tumor stromal cells remains largely unexplored. In our previous research, we developed a cancer-stroma sphere (CSS) model that integrates tumor cells with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Evaluations of chemotherapy and CAR-T therapies on CSSs have demonstrated that this model closely mimics in vivo data regarding cytotoxicity and adverse effects of therapy. In the present study, we reveal that PMEPA1 is significantly overexpressed in MSCs within the CSS. Moreover, this overexpression has been induced under short-term co-culture conditions. Among the five isoforms of PMEPA1, PMEPA1a and PMEPA1b isoforms have been detected in MSCs. These findings underscore the potential role of PMEPA1 in the tumor microenvironment modulation by MSCs. Gender equity is one of the most complex contemporary challenges, encompassing political, economic, labor, and cultural dimensions. This study aims to analyze the impact of public policies, labor practices, and social movements in promoting gender equity across various socio-political contexts. To answer the central question of how these elements influence a reduction in gender inequalities, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted, complemented by a Bibliometric Analysis, following PRISMA protocol guidelines. The bibliographic search, carried out in the Scopus database, covered the period from 2015 to 2025 and identified 26 relevant studies that met the predefined inclusion criteria. The results reveal that, despite progress in formulating policies aimed at combating gender-based violence and promoting equality, the implementation of these measures is hindered by a lack of inter-institutional coordination and the persistence of deeply rooted cultural norms. Likewise, structural inequalities in the labor sphere are evident, such as the gender wage gap and barriers to professional advancement. On the other hand, social movements have emerged as key actors—including governmental institutions, civil society organizations, and healthcare providers—in highlighting and transforming these disparities by driving changes in political agendas and increasing women’s representation in decision-making positions. In summary, this study underscores the need to adopt intersectional and comprehensive approaches to achieve effective and sustainable gender equity, while comparing the influence of policies across different global regions. This paper outlines a methodology for creating an educational and informative communication system for non-specialised audiences in order to preserve and pass on the heritage of ideas and practices adopted in the medieval political and administrative sphere. Through the combined use of digital technologies (such as GISs, 3D modelling and virtual tours), historical sources can potentially reveal how political and administrative aspects affected different areas within the medieval city, not just the main seats of power. Bologna, a prestigious medieval university metropolis, is chosen as a case study because of the remarkable wealth of documentation in its archives from the city’s political culture in the Middle Ages. Written historical sources, including documentary and narrative texts, are among the primary tools employed in the study of European medieval urban communities in general. Documentary sources help us understand and reconstruct the complexities of civic administration, urban policies and the economy, as well as how citizens experience them daily. The involvement of citizens in the political and administrative life of late medieval cities is explored through the management and digital processing of historical documentation. Digital humanities tools can facilitate this analysis, offering a perspective that sheds light on the formation of the pre-modern state. Although digital databases and repositories have significantly contributed to preserving and digitally archiving historical sources, these are often aimed exclusively at the academic level and remain underutilised as privileged didactic and educational tools for a broad audience. Cytokinesis in Suspension: A Distinctive Trait of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have a broad clinical potential, but their selection and expansion on plastic cause unknown purity and phenotypic alterations, reducing therapy efficiency. Furthermore, their behavior in non-adherent conditions during systemic transplantation remains poorly understood. The sphere formation from single cells is commonly used to assess stemness, but MSCs lack this ability, raising questions about their anchorage dependence for proliferation. We investigated whether bone marrow-derived MSCs can complete cytokinesis in non-adherent environments. Primary human and mouse bone marrow-derived MSCs were synchronized in early mitosis using nocodazole and were cultured on soft, rigid, or non-adherent surfaces. Both human and mouse MSCs displayed an ALIX (abscission licensor) recruitment to the midbody 40–90 min post-nocodazole release, regardless of the substrate adherence. Cells maintained for 4hr in the suspension remained viable, and daughter cells rapidly migrated apart upon the re-adhesion to fibronectin-coated surfaces, demonstrating cytokinesis completion in suspension. These findings distinguish MSCs from fibroblasts (which require adhesion for division), provide a more general stemness feature, and suggest that adhesion-independent cytokinesis is a trait relevant to the post-transplantation survival and tissue homing. This property may offer strategies to expand MSCs with an improved purity and functionality and to enhance engraftment by leveraging cell cycle manipulation to promote an early extracellular matrix deposition at target sites. Ovarian cancer (OC) is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy worldwide, with high rates of disease relapse posing a significant therapeutic challenge. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop novel treatments for OC. This study aims to evaluate the effects of the novel imipridone, ONC206, both as a monotherapy and in combination with the standard of care chemotherapy drug, cisplatin (CDDP), on human OC cell lines. In order to study the effect of ONC206 and CDDP on ovarian cancer, two cell lines, OVCAR-420 and SKOV-3, were used in this study. Cell proliferation was assessed using MTT assay while cell viability was evaluated using the trypan blue exclusion assay. Cell migration was examined using the wound healing assay. To investigate the effects of both treatments, alone or in combination on the stem-cell-like population of OC cells, the sphere-forming assay was employed. Our results revealed that ONC206, alone or in combination with CDDP, exerts a potent anti-proliferative effect on both OVCAR-420 and SKOV-3 cells, as shown in the MTT and trypan blue exclusion assays. Interestingly, a synergistic effect was observed when ONC206 was combined with CDDP, enhancing the overall anti-cancer efficacy. Additionally, ONC206 alone or in combination with CDDP inhibited the migratory ability of the ovarian cancer cells. Furthermore, the activity of ovarian cancer stem cells was inhibited when cells were treated with ONC206 alone or in combination with CDDP, as shown in the significant decrease in both the size and the sphere-forming ability of ovarian cancer stem cells in the 3D culture model. Our results highly suggest the potential of imipridones as a new class of therapeutics in ovarian cancer management. Among these, ONC206 shows nanomolar potency, highlighting its potential as a standalone therapy or in combination with existing treatment regimens. Full article

A myriad of biological effects can be stimulated by ultrasound (US) for the treatment of cancer. The objective of our research was to investigate the effect of ultrasound alone and in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs such as doxorubicin (DOX) and temozolomide (TMZ) on human glioblastoma (GBM) and the human epidermoid carcinoma cancer 2D and 3D cell cultures. The results indicated that the US 96-probe device could induce tumour sphere cytotoxicity in a dosage- and time-dependent manner, with multiple treatments augmenting this cytotoxic effect. With enhanced cytotoxicity, US decreased tumour sphere growth metabolic activity, disrupted spheroid integrity, and heightened the occurrence of DNA double strand breaks, resulting in damage to tumour spheres and an inability to rebuild tumour spheres after multiple US treatments. The combination of US and TMZ/DOX enhanced the efficiency of treatment for GBM and epidermoid carcinoma by enhancing induced cytotoxicity in 3D tumour spheres compared to 2D monolayer cells and also by increasing the incubation time, which is the most crucial way to differentiate between the effectiveness of drug treatment with and without US. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that US enhances drug diffusion, uptake, and cytotoxicity using 3D spheroid models when compared with 2D cultures. They also demonstrate the significance of 3D cell culture models in drug delivery and discovery research. Full article

Background/Objectives: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent a minor yet critical subpopulation within tumors, endowed with self-renewal and differentiation capacities, and are implicated in tumor initiation, progression, metastasis, therapeutic resistance, and recurrence. Reliable in vitro functional assays to characterize CSCs are pivotal for the development of personalized oncology strategies. This study sought to establish and validate a microfluidic device (MD) platform for the enrichment, functional assessment, and therapeutic evaluation of CSC populations derived from experimental models and primary tumor samples. Methods: Murine (LM38LP) and human (BPR6) breast cancer cell lines were cultured within MDs to promote sphere formation. CSC enrichment was confirmed through the expression analysis of pluripotency-associated genes (Oct4, Sox2, Nanog, and CD44) by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and immunofluorescence. Sphere number, size, and gene expression profiles were quantitatively assessed before (control) and after chemotherapeutic exposure. To validate the MD platform against conventional scale, parallel experiments were performed in 12 well plates. To extend translational relevance, three primary canine tumor samples (solid thyroid carcinoma, simple tubular carcinoma, and reactive lymph node) were mechanically disaggregated and processed within MDs for CSC characterization. Results: The MD platform enabled the consistent enrichment of CSC populations, showing significant modulation of sphere growth parameters and stemness marker expression following chemotherapeutic treatment. Beyond its comparability with conventional culture, the MD also supported immunofluorescence staining and allowed real-time monitoring of individual cell growth. Sphere formation efficiency (SFE) and CSC marker expression were similarly demonstrated in primary veterinary tumor cultures, highlighting the device’s cross-species applicability. Conclusions: Microfluidic-based sphere assays represent a robust, reproducible, and scalable platform for the functional interrogation of CSC dynamics and therapeutic responses. This methodology holds great promise for advancing CSC-targeted therapies and supporting personalized oncology in both human and veterinary settings. Full article

Abstract
We are living in a world filled with artifacts, including daily-use and durable products. In the context of sustainable consumption and production (SCP), the term “sufficiency” is an essential keyword. We are living in a world filled with artifacts, including daily-use and durable products. In the context of sustainable consumption and production (SCP), the term “sufficiency” is an essential keyword. The concept of sufficiency is important for grasping the overall contribution of product functions to the fulfillment of human needs in terms of social sustainability. Sufficiency is also understood to be a necessary component for reducing the environmental impact of daily-use and durable products on the natural environment. Therefore, sufficiency is regarded as a key factor in promoting environmental sustainability. Generally, a product itself is not as essential as the functions it provides to the user. However, product functions have not only positive aspects that satisfy human needs, but also negative aspects that do not. Most existing methods for assessing the satisfaction of human needs are based on direct approaches, such as life satisfaction surveys, which do not take product functions into account. In the previous study, we proposed a living-sphere approach that integrates the traditional engineering design framework with Max-Neef’s framework of needs, relating product functions to fundamental human needs. In Max-Neef’s framework, a key concept is the “satisfier,” which refers to a conceptual method of satisfying universal human needs; however, this concept varies according to regional or local circumstances, such as culture, climate, and history. This study proposes a method to evaluate net sufficiency, which is the overall impact of product functions, both positive and negative, on fulfilling fundamental human needs. Through introducing not only a satisfier that fulfills but also a barrier that obstructs fundamental human needs, it is possible to comprehensively evaluate the degree to which a product’s functions fulfill such needs. Two case studies from Osaka and Hanoi were carried out independently, showing that the proposed method enables comprehensive evaluation of the net sufficiency of meeting fundamental needs in terms of the positive and negative aspects of product functions. Hate speech is a complex topic that transcends language, culture, and even social spheres. Recently, the spread of hate speech on social media sites like Facebook has added a new layer of complexity to the issue of online safety and content moderation. This study seeks to minimize this problem by developing an Arabic script-based tool for automatically detecting hate speech in Roman Urdu, an informal script used most commonly for South Asian digital communications. Roman Urdu is relatively complex as there are no standardized spellings, leading to syntactic variations, which increases the difficulty of hate speech detection. To tackle this problem, we adopt a holistic strategy using a combination of six machine learning (ML) and four Deep Learning (DL) models, a dataset from Facebook comments, which was preprocessed (tokenization, stopwords removal, etc.), and text vectorization (TF-IDF, word embeddings). The ML algorithms used in this study are LR, SVM, RF, NB, KNN, and GBM. We also use deep learning architectures like CNN, RNN, LSTM, and GRU to increase the accuracy of the classification further. It is proven by the experimental results that deep learning models outperform the traditional ML approaches by a significant margin, with CNN and LSTM achieving accuracies of 95.1% and 96.2%, respectively. As far as we are aware, this is the first work that investigates QLoRA for fine-tuning large models for the task of offensive language detection in Roman Urdu. Full article

Veneration of the Buddhist Canon and National Integration in the Yuan Dynasty: Religious Policy and Cultural Convergence

Inheriting a tradition of religious tolerance from the Inner Asian Steppe, the Mongol Yuan Empire elevated Buddhism to a pivotal role in unifying its multiethnic and culturally diverse domain, with Tengriist ideology serving as the political foundation for these Buddhist veneration policies. The ruling class of the Yuan dynasty practiced a complex interaction between religion and political unity through the institutionalization of the cult of writing, printing, and reading the Buddhist Canon. Specifically, the Yuan dynasty established specialized government offices to mobilize elites from Mongolian, Han Chinese, Goryeo, and other ethnic groups for the construction of a multilingual Buddhist Canon. They copied the scriptures with gold and silver ink in Chinese, Tibetan, Uyghur, and other languages. Participants in scripture copying were rewarded or granted official positions. In this way, they achieved the goal of enlisting local elites, the cohesion of the community’s beliefs, and enhanced the unity of the local elites. By subsidizing the writing and reading of Buddhist classics, the Yuan rulers succeeded in constructing a space of identity at the level of material culture and facilitated cultural interaction and political integration among various social groups such as the Mongols, ethnic groups, and Han Chinese. Through state-sponsored scripture carving and recitation activities, the Yuan rulers cultivated a shared identity in the material culture sphere, facilitating cultural exchange and political integration across the Mongolians, the Han Chinese, and other ethnic communities. However, the effectiveness of state unification was significantly constrained by the Mongolian rulers’ policy of ethnic segregation, central–local conflict, and the high concentration of social wealth in the Buddhist communities. This article examines the interplay of religion, nationalism, and identity in contemporary Sweden, focusing on the rising phenomenon of Christian nationalism. Our analysis of editorials and opinion pieces from major Swedish newspapers reveals a significant shift towards a more pronounced Christian influence in public discourse, suggesting a renegotiation of the sacred–secular divide. This shift highlights a growing intertwining of religious narratives with national identity, raising questions about whether Sweden should embrace its Christian heritage or maintain religious neutrality and plurality. Our findings indicate that expressions of individual faith emerging in cultural discussions are not merely personal; they also foster organized religion, contributing to the construction of new communal identities. This relocation of the sacred from the private to the public sphere signifies a renewed world-building potential for religion, particularly in urban settings, challenging classical secularization theories. The increasing prominence of Christian perspectives reflects discontent with “secularized Christianity-as-culture”, signaling a desire for a more foundational Christianity. Furthermore, the integration of spheres, where discourse on values and societal crises fosters a renewed demand for religion, leads to a need to reinforce a religious identity which results in a “cultural defense” that effectively supports Christian nationalism.
