With the growth of the plant-based food sector, increasing amounts of by-products are generated. Sea buckthorn pomace (SBP), a by-product of juice and other manufacturing products, is rich in bioactive compounds such as phenolics, oligosaccharides, proteins, and dietary fiber. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of modification methods, such as enzymatic hydrolysis and supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SFE-CO2), on the chemical composition and technological properties of SBP. SBP and SBP obtained after SFE-CO2 (SBP-CO2) were enzymatically modified using Pectinex® Ultra Tropical, Viscozyme® L, and Celluclast® 1.5 L (Novozyme A/S, Bagsværd, Denmark). The SBP’s main constituent was insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), followed by crude proteins and lipids (respectively, 58.7, 21.1 and 12.6 g/100 in d.m.). SFE-CO2 reduced the lipid content (by 85.7%) in the pomace while increasing protein and TDF content. Enzymatic hydrolysis decreased the content of both soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and IDF, and increased the content of mono- and oligosaccharides as well as free phenolics, depending on the commercial enzyme preparation used in SBP and SBP-CO2 samples. Celluclast® 1.5 L was the most effective in hydrolyzing IDF, while Viscozyme® L and Pectinex® Ultra Tropical were the most effective in degrading SDF. Enzymatic treatment improved water swelling capacity, water retention capacity, water solubility index, oil retention capacity of SBP and SBP-CO2; however, it did not have a significant effect on the stability of the emulsions. Modification of SBP by SFE-CO2 effectively increased WSC and WSI, however it reduced WRC. These findings highlight the potential of targeted modifications to enhance the nutritional and technological properties of SBP for functional food applications. Full article

Ruminant livestock production plays a crucial role in the agricultural systems of Sub-Saharan Africa, significantly supporting rural livelihoods through income generation, improved nutrition, and employment opportunities. Despite its importance, the sector continues to face substantial challenges, such as low feed quality, seasonal feed shortages, and climate-related stresses, all of which limit productivity and sustainability. Considering these challenges, the adoption of natural feed additives has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance animal performance, optimise nutrient utilisation, and mitigate environmental impacts, including the reduction of enteric methane emissions. This review underscores the significant potential of natural feed additives such as plant extracts, essential oils, probiotics, and mineral-based supplements such as fossil shell flour as sustainable alternatives to conventional growth promoters in ruminant production systems across the region. All available documented evidence on the topic from 2000 to 2024 was collated and synthesised through standardised methods of systematic review protocol—PRISMA. Out of 319 research papers downloaded, six were included and analysed directly or indirectly in this study. The results show that the addition of feed additives to ruminant diets in all the studies reviewed significantly (p < 0.05) improved growth parameters such as average daily growth (ADG), feed intake, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control group. However, no significant (p > 0.05) effect was found on cold carcass weight (CCW), meat percentage, fat percentage, bone percentage, or intramuscular fat (IMF%) compared to the control. The available evidence indicates that these additives can provide tangible benefits, including improved growth performance, better feed efficiency, enhanced immune responses, and superior meat quality, while also supporting environmental sustainability by reducing nitrogen excretion and decreasing dependence on antimicrobial agents. Essential oils (EOs) constitute intricate mixtures of volatile phytochemicals that have garnered significant attention due to their multifaceted biological effects. Notably, the presence of bioactive constituents capable of inhibiting tyrosinase enzyme activity and scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) underpins their potential utility in skin-related applications, particularly through the modulation of melanin biosynthesis and protection of skin-relevant cells from oxidative damage—a primary contributor to hyperpigmentation disorders. Zingiber officinale Rosc. (ginger) and Humulus lupulus L. (hop) are medicinal plants widely recognized for their diverse pharmacological properties. To the best of our knowledge, this study provides the first report on the synergistic interactions between essential oils derived from these species (referred to as EOZ and EOH) offering novel insights into their combined bioactivity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate essential oils extracted from ginger rhizomes and hop strobiles with respect to the following: (1) chemical composition, determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS); (2) tyrosinase inhibitory activity; (3) capacity to inhibit linoleic acid peroxidation; (4) ABTS•+ radical scavenging potential. Furthermore, the study utilizes both the combination index (CI) and dose reduction index (DRI) as quantitative parameters to evaluate the nature of interactions and the dose-sparing efficacy of essential oil (EO) combinations. GC–MS analysis identified EOZ as a zingiberene-rich chemotype, containing abundant sesquiterpene hydrocarbons such as α-zingiberene, β-bisabolene, and α-curcumene, while EOH exhibited a caryophyllene diol/cubenol-type profile, dominated by oxygenated sesquiterpenes including β-caryophyllene-9,10-diol and 1-epi-cubenol. In vitro tests demonstrated that both oils, individually and in combination, showed notable anti-tyrosinase, radical scavenging, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory effects. These results support their multifunctional bioactivity profiles with possible relevance to skin care formulations, warranting further investigation. Full article

Weed management remains a critical challenge in the U.S. container ornamental production industry, where weeds not only compete with crops for limited resources but also harbor pests and pathogens, thereby diminishing plant quality and marketability. The paper explores the economic impact of weed infestations, herbicide resistance development, and the limited availability of selective herbicides for ornamental crops in the United States. This review synthesizes current chemical weed control tactics, focusing not only on both preemergence and postemergence herbicides commonly used in ornamental nurseries, but also organic alternatives and integrated weed management (IWM) approaches as complementary strategies by evaluating their effectiveness, crop safety, and usage. There is a critical need for research in the areas of alternative chemical options such as insecticides, miticides (e.g., Zerotol and Tetra Curb Max), and organic products for liverwort control in greenhouses. Although essential oils and plant-based extracts show some potential, their effectiveness and practical use remain largely unexplored. Full article

The growing demand for sustainable plant-based dairy alternatives has spurred interest in valorizing agro-industrial byproducts like hazelnut cake, a protein-rich byproduct of oil extraction. This study developed formulations for vegan ice cream using unfermented (HIC) and Aspergillus oryzae-fermented hazelnut cake (FHIC), comparing their physicochemical, functional, and sensory properties to conventional dairy ice cream (DIC). Solid-state fermentation (72 h, 30 °C) enhanced the cake’s bioactive properties, and ice creams were characterized for composition, texture, rheology, melting behavior, antioxidant activity, and enzyme inhibition pre- and post-in vitro digestion. The results indicate that FHIC had higher protein content (64.64% vs. 58.02% in HIC) and unique volatiles (e.g., benzaldehyde and 3-methyl-1-butanol). While DIC exhibited superior overrun (15.39% vs. 4.01–7.00% in vegan samples) and slower melting, FHIC demonstrated significantly higher post-digestion antioxidant activity (4.73 μmol TE/g DPPH vs. 1.44 in DIC) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition (4.85–7.42%). Sensory evaluation ranked DIC highest for overall acceptability, with FHIC perceived as polarizing due to pronounced flavors. Despite textural challenges, HIC and FHIC offered nutritional advantages, including 18–30% lower calories and enhanced bioactive compounds. This study highlights fermentation as a viable strategy to upcycle hazelnut byproducts into functional vegan ice creams, although the optimization of texture and flavor is needed for broader consumer acceptance. This study evaluated the influence of compost and bioinoculants (mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting bacteria) on the yield and composition of essential oil extracted from Tanacetum balsamita L. over two growing seasons. The plants were cultivated under four treatments: compost, bioinoculants, a combination (bioinoculants + compost), and a control. At each harvest, essential oil was extracted from fresh leaves via stem-flow distillation and analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with single quadrupole mass spectrometry. Twenty to twenty-four compounds were identified. Based on the dominant terpene derivative, the results indicated that Tanacetum balsamita L. cultivated in Italy belongs to “camphor” chemotype, a pharmacologically active compound known for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. Moreover, three compounds, α-, β-phellandrene and myrtenol, were identified as typical of Tanacetum balsamita L. cultivated in Italy. Treatment effects were significant for some compounds (camphor, borneol, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, dehydro sabinene ketone, and 3-thujanol), and the interaction between treatment and year was significant for a few compounds (borneol, terpinen-4-ol, dehydro sabinene ketone, 1,8-cineol, and 3-thujanol). These results emphasize the need to account for seasonal variation and underline the necessity of a deeper understanding of how experimental factors interact with them, especially in long-term essential oil studies. Acalitus simplex is an eriophyoid mite pest of the ornamental plant Ruellia simplex. Acalitus simplex compromises the esthetics of R. simplex by inducing erinea formation. Management practices for A. simplex are currently lacking. This study assessed the potential of commercial biorational (citric acid, potassium salt of fatty acids, garlic, thyme, and mineral oil) and conventional (abamectin, fenpyroximate, bifenthrin, spiromesifen) pesticides under laboratory conditions, using two types of spray applications: (A) curative, after erinea formation, and (B) prophylactic, before erinea formation. In the curative application, abamectin, garlic oil, and mineral oil were most effective; in the prophylactic application, abamectin and mineral oil showed the highest efficacies. Abamectin and mineral oil were further tested under greenhouse conditions. Both treatments effectively controlled A. simplex by preventing erinea formation over a four-week post-application period, regardless of the application type. At the end of the experiment, mites were extracted from R. simplex plants. In the curative application, significantly fewer mites were extracted from abamectin and mineral oil treatments than in the control. In the prophylactic application, mites were absent in abamectin and mineral oil treatments but present in the control. Abamectin and mineral oil can be used to manage A. simplex in landscapes. The plant-based oil industry contributes significantly to food waste/by-products in the form of underutilized biomass, including oil pomace, cake/meal, seeds, peels, wastewater, etc. These waste/by-products contain a significant quantity of nutritious and bioactive compounds (phenolics, lignans, flavonoids, dietary fiber, proteins, and essential minerals) with proven health-promoting effects. The utilization of them as natural, cost-effective, and food-grade functional ingredients in novel food formulations holds considerable potential. This review highlights the potential of waste/by-products generated during plant-based oil processing as a promising source of bioactive compounds and covers systematic research, including recent studies focusing on innovative extraction and processing techniques. It also sheds light on their promising potential for valorization as food ingredients, with a focus on specific examples of food fortification. Furthermore, the potential for value creation in the food industry is emphasized, taking into account associated challenges and limitations, as well as future perspectives. Overall, the current information suggests that the valorization of plant-based oil industry waste and by-products for use in the food industry could substantially reduce malnutrition and poverty, generate favorable health outcomes, mitigate environmental concerns, and enhance economic profit in a sustainable way by developing health-promoting, environmentally sustainable food systems. The development of active food packaging has evolved rapidly in recent years, offering innovative solutions to enhance food preservation and safety while addressing sustainability challenges. This review compiles and analyzes recent advancements (2019–2024) in release-type active packaging, focusing on essential oils, natural extracts, and phenolic compounds as active agents. Primarily plant-derived, these compounds exhibit significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, extending shelf life and enhancing food quality. Technological strategies such as encapsulation and polymer blending have been increasingly adopted to overcome challenges related to volatility, solubility, and sensory impact. Integrating bio-based polymers, including chitosan, starch, and polylactic acid, further supports the development of environmentally friendly packaging systems. This review also highlights trends in compound-specific research, release mechanisms, and commercial applications, including a detailed analysis of patents and case studies across various food matrices. These developments have already been translated into practical applications, such as antimicrobial sachets for meat and essential oil-based pads for fresh produce. Moreover, by promoting the valorization of agro-industrial by-products and the use of biodegradable materials, emission-type active packaging contributes to the principles of the circular economy. This comprehensive overview underscores the potential of natural bioactive compounds in advancing sustainable and functional food packaging technologies. Full article

The prevention of biofilm formation and algal biodeterioration on building materials, particularly on cultural heritage sites, is a growing concern. Due to regulatory restrictions on conventional algicidal biocides in Europe, natural alternatives such as essential oils are gaining interest for their potential use in heritage conservation. This study evaluates the anti-algal activity of Salvia officinalis and Equisetum arvense (essential oils, hydrolates, and extracts) against a mixed culture of five green algae species (Bracteacoccus minor, Stichococcus bacillaris, Klebsormidium nitens, Chloroidium saccharophilum, and Diplosphaera chodatii). The plant materials were processed using hydrodistillation and solvent extraction, followed by chemical characterization through gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Biological efficacy was assessed by measuring algal growth inhibition, changes in biomass colour, chlorophyll a concentration, and fluorescence. S. officinalis yielded higher extract quantities (extraction yield: 23%) than E. arvense and contained bioactive compounds such as thujone, camphor, and cineole, which correlated with its strong anti-algal effects. The essential oil of S. officinalis demonstrated the highest efficacy, significantly inhibiting biofilm formation (zones of inhibition: 15–94 mm) and photosynthetic activity at 0.5% concentration (reduction in chlorophyll a concentration 90–100%), without causing visible discolouration of treated surfaces (∆E < 2). These findings highlight the potential of S. officinalis essential oil as a natural, effective, and material-safe algicidal biocide for the sustainable protection of cultural heritage sites. Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is widely cultivated for its valuable medicinal, aromatic, and oil-rich seeds. However, drought stress remains one of the most significant abiotic factors influencing its development, physiological function, and overall output. This study investigates the potential of foliar applications of silicon (Si), Sargassum muticum (Yendo) Fensholt extracts (SWE), and their combination to enhance drought tolerance and mitigate stress-induced damage in sesame. Plants were grown under well-watered conditions (80% field capacity, FC) versus 40% FC (drought conditions) and were treated with foliar applications of 1 mM Si, 10% SWE, or both. The results showed that the majority of the tested parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) lowered by drought stress. However, the combined application of Si and SWE significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced plant performance under drought stress, leading to improved growth, biomass accumulation, water status, and physiological traits. Gas exchange, photosynthetic pigment content, and photosystem activity (PSI and PSII) all increased significantly when SWE were given alone; PSII was more significantly affected. In contrast, Si alone had a more pronounced impact on PSI activity. These findings suggest that Si and SWE, applied individually or in combination, can effectively alleviate drought stress’s negative impact on sesame, supporting their use as promising biostimulants for enhancing drought tolerance. Two solvents, n-hexane and ethyl acetate, were employed to extract oil from Asphodelus tenuifolius Cav. seeds using the Soxhlet extraction technique. The process was optimized using Central Composite Design (CCD) and Response Surface Methodology (RSM). ANOVA and a second-order polynomial equation were applied to evaluate the effects of key operational factors, including extraction time (20–60 min) and solvent-to-solid ratio (0.2–0.6 g/mL), on oil yield. The physicochemical properties, fatty acid composition, and functional groups of the extracted oil were analyzed. While both solvents influenced oil yield and quality, the fatty acid composition remained consistent, with unsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic acid, identified as the main components. Under optimized conditions, the highest oil yields were 22% with n-hexane and 19.91% with ethyl acetate. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the presence of ester groups, suggesting potential applications in biodiesel production. These findings offer valuable insights for producing oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids for food, cosmetic and renewable energy industries. Background: Cucurbitacin E (CuE), a natural tetracyclic triterpenoid compound extracted from the melon stems of Cucurbitaceae plants, has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, along with the ability to enhance cellular immunity. However, its role and molecular mechanism in regulating lipid metabolism and adipogenesis remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the potential anti-adipogenic and anti-obesity effects of CuE in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Materials and Methods: 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were cultured and induced to differentiate using a standard adipogenic cocktail containing dexamethasone, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), and insulin (DMI). CuE was administered during the differentiation process at various concentrations. Lipid accumulation was assessed using Oil Red O staining, and cell viability was evaluated via the MTT assay. To determine whether CuE induced apoptosis or necrosis, flow cytometry was performed using annexin V/PI staining. Additional molecular analyses, such as Western blotting and RT-PCR, were used to examine the expression of key adipogenic markers. Results: Treatment with CuE significantly reduced lipid droplet formation in DMI-induced 3T3-L1 adipocytes in a dose-dependent manner, as shown by decreased Oil Red O staining. Importantly, CuE did not induce apoptosis or necrosis in 3T3-L1 cells at effective concentrations, indicating its safety toward normal adipocytes. Moreover, CuE treatment downregulated the expression of adipogenic markers such as PPARγ and C/EBPα at both mRNA and protein levels. Discussion: Our findings suggest that CuE exerts a non-cytotoxic inhibitory effect on adipocyte differentiation and lipid accumulation. This anti-adipogenic effect is likely mediated through the suppression of key transcription factors involved in adipogenesis. The absence of cytotoxicity supports the potential application of CuE as a safe bioactive compound for obesity management. Further investigation is warranted to elucidate the upstream signaling pathways and in vivo efficacy of CuE. Conclusions: Cucurbitacin E effectively inhibits adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes without inducing cytotoxic effects, making it a promising candidate for the development of functional foods or therapeutic agents aimed at preventing or treating obesity. This study provides new insights into the molecular basis of CuE’s anti-obesity action and highlights its potential as a natural lipogenesis inhibitor. Full article

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is the vector responsible for the transmission of important arboviruses such as dengue fever, Chikungunya, Zika virus, and yellow fever. These diseases affect millions of people and exert impacts on healthcare systems throughout the world. Given the increasing resistance to synthetic insecticides, essential oils from plants constitute an ecologically viable alternative for the control of this vector. The aim of the present study was to investigate the larvicidal activity of the essential oil (EO), aqueous extract, rutin, and hydrolate from the leaves of Myrciaria floribunda against Aedes aegypti larvae in the initial L4 stage. The yield of EO was 0.47%. Thirty-seven chemical constituents were identified and quantified using chromatographic methods. The major constituents were (E)-caryophyllene (27.35%), 1,8-cineole (11.25%), β-selinene (4.92%), and α-muurolene (4.92%). In the larvicidal tests, the lethal concentration (LC50) was 201.73 ppm for the essential oil, 15.85% for the aqueous extract, and 22.46 ppm for rutin. The hydrolate had no larvicidal activity. The compounds that exhibited larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti constitute a promising option for the development of natural formulations to diminish the propagation of this vector. The parameters and plant habitat characteristics of glandular trichomes could allow for faster and cheaper identification and selection of more essential oil-rich wild aromatic plants for further cultivation. This study aimed to establish relationships between the parameters of peltate glandular trichomes and essential oil content in commercially potential Thymus pulegioides in relation to plant sex, chemotype, and habitat characteristics. In total, 124 T. pulegioides plants belonging to different chemotypes and sexes and collected from 23 natural habitats were analysed. Essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation, and a light microscope was used to investigate parameters of peltate glandular trichomes in upper and lower leaf epidermises. For investigation of the dynamics of the parameters of peltate glandular trichomes, T. pulegioides were growing in open ground under the same environmental conditions. Results demonstrated that the essential oil percentage in phenolic chemotype plants was higher than in plants of a non-phenolic chemotype. Females and hermaphrodites did not significantly differ according to essential oil percentage. Cover abundance of T. pulegioides negatively affects the density and diameter of peltate glandular trichomes and the essential oil percentage in T. pulegioides. The parameters of peltate trichomes in the upper leaf epidermis could be anatomical markers, helping to select T. pulegioides with higher essential oil contents from natural habitats as promising candidates as new crops.
