Enhancing forage protein is key to sustainable ruminant nutrition. The nutritive value of Hedysarum coronarium L. was investigated by studying different preservation systems (fresh vs. dehydrated pellet vs. hay) (Exp. 1) and morphological fractions (flowers vs. leaves vs. stems) (Exp. 2). For the fresh and pelleted systems, two cuts were used. Proximately, total polyphenols and condensed tannins were detected. In vitro fermentation characteristics were studied by incubating samples with buffered sheep rumen fluid, estimating methane production by volatile fatty acids. Fresh and pelleted sulla were more nutritionally advantageous than hay, in terms of metabolizable energy and protein-to-fiber ratio. Pelleting at the beginning of flowering proved to be a suitable forage for sheep feeding due to protein (15.1% DM), metabolizable energy (9.64 MJ/kg DM), structural carbohydrates (39.5% DM), and total polyphenols (13.5 GAE g/kg DM) content. This cut showed an in vitro fermentation rate (9.86 mL/h), organic matter degradability (55.7%), and volatile fatty acids (87.3 mmoL/g) that were higher (p < 0.05) than hay. Flowers and leaves showed higher (p < 0.05) levels of secondary metabolites than stems as well as lower methane production. These results suggest the potential influence of these compounds in reducing rumen emissions. Dehydration and pelleting resulted in an effective preservation method for maintaining nutrients in sulla forage. Full article

Recent advancements in composite materials design have made glass fiber-reinforced polymer composites (GFRPC) a viable choice for a wide range of engineering and industrial applications. Although GFRPCs boast attractive characteristics such as low specific mass and high specific mechanical strength, identifying and characterizing damage mechanisms in these materials is challenging. Several scientific studies have examined the root causes of GFRPC failure using various methods, including non-destructive techniques and learning algorithms. Despite this, ongoing investigations aim to accurately detect mechanical defects in GFRPCs. This study explores the use of non-destructive testing (NDT) combined with unsupervised learning algorithms to identify and classify damage mechanisms in GFRPCs. The NDT method employed in this study is acoustic emission (AE), which identifies waveforms associated with various failure mechanisms during testing. These waveforms are categorized using unsupervised learning methods such as principal component analysis (PCA) and self-organizing maps. PCA selects the most appropriate AE descriptors for distinguishing between different damage mechanisms, while the self-organizing maps algorithm performs clustering analysis and classifies failure mechanisms. Scanning electron microscope images of the observed failures are provided to sup-port the findings derived from AE data. Full article

The precursor-derived ceramic route is recognized as an advanced and efficient technique for fabricating ceramic matrix composites, particularly suitable for the development and microstructural tailoring of continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic matrix composites. In this work, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and tetravinylcyclotetrasiloxane were employed as monomers to synthesize a branched siloxane via ring-opening polymerization. A subsequent hydrosilylation reaction led to the formation of polyvinylsiloxane with a three-dimensional crosslinked structure. The precursor exhibited excellent fluidity, adjustable viscosity, and superior thermosetting characteristics, enabling efficient impregnation and densification of reinforcements through the polymer infiltration and pyrolysis process. Upon pyrolysis, the polyvinylsiloxane gradually converted from an organic polymer to an amorphous inorganic ceramic phase, yielding silicon oxycarbide ceramics with a high ceramic yield of 81.3%. Elemental analysis indicated that the resulting ceramic mainly comprised silicon and oxygen, with a low carbon content. Furthermore, the material demonstrated a stable dielectric constant (~2.5) and low dielectric loss (<0.01), which are beneficial for enhanced thermal stability and dielectric performance. These findings offer a promising precursor system and process reference for the low-cost production of high-performance, multifunctional ceramic matrix composites with strong potential for engineering applications. Climate extremes threaten the resilience of Eucalyptus plantations, yet hybridization with drought-tolerant species may enhance stress tolerance. This study analyzed xylem anatomical and functional drought responses in commercial Eucalyptus grandis (GG) clones and hybrids: E. grandis × camaldulensis (GC), E. grandis × tereticornis (GT), and E. grandis × urophylla (GU1, GU2). We evaluated vessel traits (water transport), fibers (mechanical support), and wood density (D) in stems and branches. Theoretical stem hydraulic conductivity (kStheo), vessel lumen fraction (F), vessel composition (S), and associations with previous hydraulic and growth data were assessed. While general drought responses occurred, GC had the most distinct xylem profile. This may explain it having the highest performance in different irrigation conditions. Red gum hybrids (GC, GT) maintained kStheo under drought, with stable F and a narrower vessel size, especially in branches. Conversely, GG and GU2 reduced F and S; and stem kStheo declined for a similar F in these clones, indicating vascular reconfiguration aligning the stem with the branch xylem. Almost all clones increased D under drought in any organ, with the highest increase in red gum hybrids. These results reveal diverse anatomical adjustments to drought among clones, partially explaining their growth responses. Full article

In recent decades, the rapid expansion of the food processing industry has led to significant losses and waste, with the fruit and vegetable sector among the most affected. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), losses in this category can reach up to 60%. Vegetable waste includes edible parts discarded during processing, packaging, distribution, and consumption, often comprising by-products rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, dietary fibers, vitamins, and enzymes. The underutilization of these resources constitutes both an economic drawback and an environmental and ethical concern. Current recovery practices, including their use in animal feed or bioenergy production, contribute to a circular economy but are often limited by high operational costs. In this context, fermentation has emerged as a promising, sustainable approach for converting vegetable by-products into value-added food ingredients. This process improves digestibility, reduces undesirable compounds, and introduces probiotics beneficial to human health. The present review examines how fermentation can improve the nutritional, sensory, and functional properties of plant-based foods. By presenting several case studies, it illustrates how fermentation can effectively valorize vegetable processing by-products, supporting the development of novel, health-promoting food products with improved technological qualities. Prebiotics Improve Blood Pressure Control by Modulating Gut Microbiome Composition and Function: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: Ingestion of dietary fibers (DFs) is a safe and accessible intervention associated with reductions in blood pressure (BP) and cardiovascular mortality. However, the mechanisms underlying the antihypertensive effects of DFs remain poorly defined. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates how DFs influence BP regulation by modulating gut microbial composition and enhancing short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production. Methods: MEDLINE and EMBASE were systematically searched for interventional studies published between January 2014 and December 2024. Eligible studies assessed the effects of DFs or other prebiotics on systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) in addition to changes in gut microbial or SCFA composition. Results: Of the 3010 records screened, nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria (seven human, twelve animal). A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted on six human trials reporting post-intervention BP values. Prebiotics were the primary intervention. In hypertensive cohorts, prebiotics significantly reduced SBP (−8.5 mmHg; 95% CI: −13.9, −3.1) and DBP (−5.2 mmHg; 95% CI: −8.5, −2.0). A pooled analysis of hypertensive and non-hypertensive patients showed non-significant reductions in SBP (−4.5 mmHg; 95% CI: −9.3, 0.3) and DBP (−2.5 mmHg; 95% CI: −5.4, 0.4). Animal studies consistently showed BP-lowering effects across diverse etiologies. Prebiotic interventions restored bacterial genera known to metabolize DFs to SCFAs (e.g., Bifidobacteria, Akkermansia, and Coprococcus) and increased SCFA levels. Mechanistically, SCFAs act along gut–organ axes to modulate immune, vascular, and neurohormonal pathways involved in BP regulation. Conclusions: Prebiotic supplementation is a promising strategy to reestablish BP homeostasis in hypertensive patients. Benefits are likely mediated through modulation of the gut microbiota and enhanced SCFA production. Full article

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gut–brain axis chronic disorder, characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in the absence of organic pathology. Nutrition plays a central role in symptom management, yet no single dietary strategy has demonstrated universal effectiveness. This narrative review critically evaluates current nutritional approaches to IBS. The low-Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides and Polyols (FODMAP) diet is the most extensively studied and provides short-term symptom relief, but its long-term effects on microbiota diversity remain concerning. The Mediterranean diet, due to its anti-inflammatory and prebiotic properties, offers a sustainable, microbiota-friendly option; however, it has specific limitations in the context of IBS, particularly due to the adverse effects of certain FODMAP-rich foods. A gluten-free diet may benefit individuals with suspected non-celiac gluten sensitivity, although improvements are often attributed to fructan restriction and placebo and nocebo effects. Lactose-free diets are effective in patients with documented lactose intolerance, while a high-soluble-fiber diet is beneficial for constipation-predominant IBS. IgG-based elimination diets are emerging but remain controversial and require further validation. In this review, we present the 10 dietary commandments for IBS, pragmatic and easily retained recommendations. It advocates a personalized, flexible, and multidisciplinary management approach, avoiding rigidity and standardized protocols, with the aim of optimizing adherence, symptom mitigation, and health-related quality of life. Future research should aim to evaluate, in real-world clinical settings, the impact and applicability of the 10 dietary commandments for IBS in terms of symptom improvement and quality of life Full article

Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) silage has high feeding value and has become an important roughage resource in China. To recognize the optimal fermentation time of the silage product, this study systematically evaluated the temporal dynamics of microbial communities and metabolic profiles in whole winter wheat silage at days 7, 14, 30, 50, and 70. The dry matter (DM) content slightly fluctuated with the extension of fermentation time, with 28.14% at 70 days of ensiling. The organic matter and neutral detergent fiber content gradually decreased with the extension of fermentation time. A significant decrease in pH was observed at days 30, 50, and 70 compared to days 7 and 14 (p < 0.05), with the lowest pH value of 4.4 recorded at day 70. The contents of lactic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid, and total volatile fatty acids gradually increased with the extension of fermentation time, reaching a maximum at 70 days of ensiling. The dominant bacteria were Proteobacteria and Firmicutes at the phylum level, and the predominant bacteria were Hafnia-Obesumbacterium, Enterobacter, and Lactobacillus at the genus level. The relative abundance of Hafnia-Obesumbacterium and Lactobacillus fluctuated slightly with the duration of fermentation, reaching a minimum for the former and a maximum for Lactobacillus at 50 days of ensiling. By day 70, Sporolactobacillus emerged as a distinct silage biomarker. The dominant fungi was Ascomycota at the phylum level, and the predominant fungi were Fusarium and an unidentified fungus at the genus level. The correlation analysis revealed significant pH–organic acid–microbe interactions, with pH negatively correlating with organic acids but positively with specific bacteria, while organic acids showed complex microbial associations. Collectively, under natural fermentation conditions, the optimal fermentation period for wheat silage exceeds 70 days, and Sporolactobacillus shows potential as a microbial inoculant for whole winter wheat silage. These findings provide a theoretical foundation for optimizing whole winter wheat silage utilization and enhancing fermentation quality. Full article

Bamboo gene science has witnessed significant advancements over the past two decades, driven by breakthroughs in gene cloning, marker-assisted breeding, sequencing, gene transformation, and gene editing technologies. These developments have not only enhanced our understanding of bamboo’s genetic diversity and adaptability but also provided critical tools for its genetic improvement. Compared to other crops, bamboo faces unique challenges, including its long vegetative growth cycle, environmental dependency, and limited genetic transformation efficiency. Then, the launch of China’s “Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic” initiative in 2022, supported by the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, has opened new opportunities for bamboo gene science as well as for bamboo production systems. This policy framework has spurred research into bamboo genetic regulation, fiber-oriented recombination, and green separation technologies, aiming to develop sustainable alternatives to plastic. Future research directions include overcoming bamboo’s environmental limitations, improving genetic transformation efficiency, and deciphering the mechanisms behind its flowering. By addressing these challenges, bamboo genetic science can enhance its economic and ecological value, contributing to global sustainability goals and the “dual-carbon” strategy. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the forage yield, quality, and weed suppression potential of narbon vetch (Vicia narbonensis L.) and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) grown as sole crops and in mixtures under organic farming conditions in Bilecik, Turkey, during the 2020–2021 growing season. The experiment included 15 treatments comprising monocultures and mixed sowing at different ratios. Measurements included morphological traits, forage yield components (green herbage, hay, and crude protein), fiber content, botanical composition, and weed biomass. The results reveal significant differences among treatments in terms of growth parameters and forage performance. Monocultures of IFVN 567 and Bartigra showed the highest green and hay yields, while mixtures such as IFVN 567 + Trinova and IFVN 567 + Bartigra outperformed in terms of land equivalent ratio (LER) and protein yield, demonstrating a clear advantage in land use efficiency. Furthermore, these mixtures showed superior weed suppression compared to monocultures. Overall, the findings suggest that carefully selected vetch–ryegrass combinations can enhance forage productivity, nutritional quality, and weed management under organic systems. Full article

The aim of this study was to determine, through meta-analysis, the effects of malic acid/malate addition on ruminal and blood parameters and diet digestibility in cattle. The literature search was conducted in Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar using the terms “organic acids”, “malic acid”, “malate”, and “bovine”. The database was composed of papers published between 1980 and 2023. The average effect of malate/malic acid inclusion was calculated using the “DerSimonian and Laird” random effects model. Meta-regression and subgroup analyses were conducted to explore sources of heterogeneity. Overall, malic acid (MAC) addition did not significantly affect rumen pH (ES = 0.310, p = 0.17), but subgroup analysis showed that malate increased pH (ES = 1.420, p < 0.01). MAC increased rumen propionate (ES = 0.560, p < 0.01) and total volatile fatty acids (VFAs; ES = 0.508, p = 0.03), while reducing the acetate-to-propionate ratio (p < 0.01). Starch and NDF intake were significant covariates affecting pH and VFA-related variables. MAC improved total-tract digestibility of dry matter (DM; ES = 0.547, p ≤ 0.05), crude protein (CP; ES = 0.422, p ≤ 0.05), and acid detergent fiber (ADF; ES = 0.635, p ≤ 0.05). It increased glucose levels (Overall ES = 0.170, p = 0.05) and reduced NEFA (Overall ES = −0.404, p = 0.03). In conclusion, the effectiveness of MAC depends on its chemical form. Improvements in rumen pH, fiber degradation, and blood parameters suggest more efficient energy use and potential metabolic benefits. The influence of diet-related covariates suggests that the response to MAC may vary depending on the nutritional composition of the diet. Full article

Electromagnetic Transduction Therapy (EMTT) Enhances Tenocyte Regenerative Potential: Evidence for Senolytic-like Effects and Matrix Remodeling

Tendinopathies are a significant challenge in musculoskeletal medicine, with current treatments showing variable efficacy. Electromagnetic transduction therapy (EMTT) has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach, but its biological effects on tendon cells remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the effects of EMTT on primary cultured human tenocytes’ behavior and functions in vitro, focusing on cellular responses, senescence-related pathways, and molecular mechanisms. Primary cultures of human tenocytes were established from semitendinosus tendon biopsies of patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (n = 6, males aged 17–37 years). Cells were exposed to EMTT at different intensities (40 and 80 mT) and impulse numbers (1000–10,500). Cell viability (MTT assay), proliferation (Ki67), senescence markers (CDKN2a/INK4a), migration (scratch test), cytoskeleton organization (immunofluorescence), and gene expression (RT-PCR) were analyzed. A 40 mT exposure elicited minimal effects, whereas 80 mT treatments induced significant cellular responses. Repeated 80 mT exposure demonstrated a dual effect: despite a moderate decrease in overall cell vitality, increased Ki67 expression (+7%, p ≤ 0.05) and significant downregulation of senescence marker CDKN2a/INK4a were observed, suggesting potential senolytic-like activity. EMTT significantly enhanced cell migration (p < 0.001) and triggered cytoskeletal remodeling, with amplified stress fiber formation and paxillin redistribution. Molecular analysis revealed upregulation of tenogenic markers (Scleraxis, Tenomodulin) and enhanced Collagen I and III expressions, particularly with treatments at 80 mT, indicating improved matrix remodeling capacity. EMTT significantly promotes tenocyte proliferation, migration, and matrix production, while simultaneously exhibiting senolytic-like effects through downregulation of senescence-associated markers. These results support EMTT as a promising therapeutic approach for the management of tendinopathies through multiple regenerative mechanisms, though further studies are needed to validate these effects in vivo. Unconventional food plants (UFPs) are increasingly valued for their nutritional composition and bioactive potential. This study proposes a comprehensive characterization of the chemical and bioactive properties of Pereskia aculeata Miller (Cactaceae) (PA); Xanthosoma sagittifolium (L.) Schott (Araceae) (XS); Stachys byzantina K. Koch (Lamiaceae) (SB); and inflorescences from three cultivars of Musa acuminata (Musaceae) var. Dwarf Cavendish, var. BRS Platina, and var. BRS Conquista (MAD, MAP, and MAC), including the assessment of physical, nutritional, phytochemical, and biological parameters. Notably, detailed phenolic profiles were established for these species, many of which are poorly documented in the literature. XS was characterized by a unique abundance of C-glycosylated flavones, especially apigenin and luteolin derivatives, rarely described for this species. SB exhibited high levels of phenylethanoid glycosides, particularly verbascoside and its isomers (up to 21.32 mg/g extract), while PA was rich in O-glycosylated flavonols such as quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin derivatives. Nutritionally, XS had the highest protein content (16.3 g/100 g dw), while SB showed remarkable dietary fiber content (59.8 g/100 g). Banana inflorescences presented high fiber (up to 66.5 g/100 g) and lipid levels (up to 7.35 g/100 g). Regarding bioactivity, PA showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (95.21%) and SB the highest reducing power in the FRAP assay (4085.90 µM TE/g). Cellular antioxidant activity exceeded 2000% in most samples, except for SB. Cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory activities were generally low, with only SB showing moderate effects against Caco-2 and AGS cell lines. SB and PA demonstrated the strongest antimicrobial activity, particularly against Yersinia enterocolitica, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Enterococcus faecalis, with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 0.156 to 0.625 mg/mL. Linear discriminant analysis revealed distinctive chemical patterns among the species, with organic acids (e.g., oxalic up to 7.53 g/100 g) and fatty acids (e.g., linolenic acid up to 52.38%) as key discriminant variables. Overall, the study underscores the nutritional and functional relevance of these underutilized plants and contributes rare quantitative data to the scientific literature regarding their phenolic signatures. Triticale (Triticosecale Wittmack) is a versatile forage crop valued for its high yield, balanced nutrition, and environmental adaptability. However, the dough-stage triricale has higher dry matter and starch content but lower water-soluble carbohydrate levels than earlier stages, posing fermentation challenges that may impair silage quality. This study aimed to investigate the effects of lactic acid bacteria inoculation on the fermentation quality, bacterial community, and metabolome of whole-plant triticale silage at the dough stage. Fresh triticale was ensiled for 30 days without or with an inoculant containing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Streptococcus bovis. Fermentation quality, bacterial succession, and metabolic profiles were analyzed at multiple time points. Inoculation significantly improved fermentation quality, characterized by a rapid pH drop, increased lactic acid production, and better preservation of fiber components. Microbial analysis revealed that inoculation successfully established Lactobacillus as the dominant genus while suppressing spoilage bacteria like Enterobacter and Clostridium. Metabolomic analysis on day 30 identified numerous differential metabolites, indicating that inoculation primarily altered pathways related to amino acid and purine metabolism. In conclusion, inoculating dough-stage triticale with this LAB combination effectively directs the fermentation trajectory. It enhances silage quality not only by optimizing organic acid profiles and microbial succession but also by modulating key metabolic pathways, ultimately leading to improved nutrient preservation. Background: The B3-domain transcription factor ABI3 (ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE 3) is a critical regulator of seed maturation, stress adaptation, and hormonal signaling in plants. However, its evolutionary dynamics and functional roles in cotton (Gossypium spp.) remain poorly characterized. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive genome-wide investigation of the ABI3 gene family across 26 plant species, with a focus on 8 Gossypium species. Analyses included phylogenetics, chromosomal localization, synteny assessment, gene duplication patterns, protein domain characterization, promoter cis-regulatory element identification, and tissue-specific/spatiotemporal expression profiling under different organizations of Gossypium hirsutum. Results: Phylogenetic and chromosomal analyses revealed conserved ABI3 evolutionary patterns between monocots and dicots, alongside lineage-specific expansion events within Gossypium spp. Syntenic relationships and duplication analysis in G. hirsutum (upland cotton) indicated retention of ancestral synteny blocks and functional diversification driven predominantly by segmental duplication. Structural characterization confirmed the presence of conserved B3 domains in all G. hirsutum ABI3 homologs. Promoter analysis identified key stress-responsive cis-elements, including ABA-responsive (ABRE), drought-responsive (MYB), and low-temperature-responsive (LTRE) motifs, suggesting a role in abiotic stress regulation. Expression profiling demonstrated significant tissue-specific transcriptional activity across roots, stems, leaves, and fiber developmental stages. Conclusions: This study addresses a significant knowledge gap by elucidating the evolution, structure, and stress-responsive expression profiles of the ABI3 gene family in cotton. It establishes a foundational framework for future functional validation and targeted genetic engineering strategies aimed at developing stress-resilient cotton cultivars with enhanced fiber quality.
