Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) remains significantly underdiagnosed in women, resulting in a persistent gender gap with important clinical, functional, and psychosocial implications. This narrative review explores the multifactorial barriers contributing to diagnostic disparities, including the male-oriented structure of current diagnostic criteria, the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric conditions, and the phenomenon of social camouflaging shaped by culturally reinforced gender norms. These factors frequently lead to delayed identification, clinical misinterpretation, and suboptimal care. The review synthesizes evidence from clinical, psychological, and sociocultural research to demonstrate how the under-recognition of ASD in women impacts mental health outcomes, access to education, occupational stability, and overall quality of life. Special emphasis is placed on the consequences of missed or late diagnoses for healthcare delivery and the educational needs of clinicians involved in ASD assessment and care. This article concludes with actionable, evidence-based recommendations for enhancing diagnostic sensitivity, developing gender-responsive screening strategies, and integrating training on female autism presentation into medical and allied health education. Addressing these challenges is essential to reducing diagnostic inequities and ensuring timely, accurate, and person-centered care for autistic women throughout their lifespan. Full article

“We Begin in Water, and We Return to Water”: Track Rock Tradition Petroglyphs of Northern Georgia and Western North Carolina

Petroglyph motifs from 23 sites and 37 panels in northern Georgia and western North Carolina foothills and mountains are analyzed within their archaeological, ethnographic, and landscape contexts. The Track Rock Tradition comprises 10 chronologically sequenced marking categories: (1) Cupules/Meanders/Open Circles; (2) Soapstone Extraction cars; (3) Vulva Shapes; (4) Figures; (5) Feet/Hands/Tracks; (6) Nested Circles; (7) Cross-in-Circles; (8) Spirals; (9) Straight Lines; and (10) Thin Incised Lines. Dating spans approximately 3800 years. Early cupules and meanders predate 3000 years ago, truncated by Late Archaic soapstone extraction. Woodland period (3000–1050 years ago) motifs include vulva shapes, figures, feet, tracks, and hands. Early Mississippian concentric circles date to 1050–600 years ago, while Middle Mississippian cross-in-circles span 600–350 years ago. Late Mississippian spirals (350–200 years ago) and post-contact metal tool incisions represent the most recent phases. The Track Rock Tradition differs from western Trapp and eastern Hagood Mill traditions. Given the spatial overlap with Iroquoian-speaking Cherokee territory, motifs are interpreted through Cherokee beliefs, supplemented by related Muskogean Creek ethnography. In Cherokee cosmology, the matrilocal Thunderers hierarchy includes the Female Sun/Male Moon, Selu (Corn Mother)/Kanati (Lucky Hunter), Medicine Woman/Judaculla (Master of Game), and Little People families. Ritual practitioners served as intermediaries between physical and spirit realms through purification, fasting, body scratching, and rock pecking. Meanders represent trails, rivers, and lightning. Cupules and lines emphasize the turtle appearance of certain rocks. Vulva shapes relate to fertility, while tracks connect to life-giving abilities. Concentric circles denote townhouses; cross-in-circles and spirals represent central fires. The tradition shows continuity in core beliefs despite shifting emphases from hunting (Woodland) to corn cultivation (Mississippian), with petroglyphs serving as necessary waypoints for spiritual supplicants. Background: Vascular dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a shared contributor to both cognitive impairment and late-life depression (LLD). However, the combined diagnostic value of cerebral hemodynamics, neuroimaging markers, and neuropsychological outcomes remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the associations be-tween transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound parameters, cognitive performance, and depressive symptoms in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and LLD. Importantly, we evaluated the integrative value of TCD-derived indices alongside MRI-confirmed white matter lesions (WMLs) and standardized neurocognitive and affective assessments. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 96 older adults were enrolled including 78 cognitively unimpaired individuals and 18 with MCI. All participants underwent structured clinical, neuropsychological, and imaging evaluations including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), MRI-based Fazekas scoring of WMLs, and TCD ultrasonography of the middle cerebral artery. Hemodynamic variables included mean blood flow velocity (MBFV), end-diastolic velocity (EDV), pulsatility index (PI), and resistive index (RI). Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to identify independent predictors of MCI. Results: Participants with MCI showed significantly lower MBFV and EDV, and higher PI and RI (p < 0.05 for all) compared with cognitively unimpaired participants. In multivariate analysis, lower MBFV (OR = 0.64, p = 0.02) and EDV (OR = 0.70, p = 0.03), and higher PI (OR = 3.2, p < 0.01) and RI (OR = 1.9, p < 0.01) remained independently associated with MCI. ROC analysis revealed excellent discriminative performance for RI (AUC = 0.919) and MBFV (AUC = 0.879). Furthermore, PI correlated positively with depressive symptom severity, while RI was inversely related to the GDS-15 scores. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the diagnostic utility of TCD-derived hemodynamic parameters—particularly RI and MBFV—in identifying early vascular contributions to cognitive and affective dysfunction in older adults. The integration of TCD with MRI-confirmed WML assessment and standardized cognitive/mood measures represents a novel and clinically practical multi-modal approach for neurovascular profiling in aging populations. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by a dysregulated immune response to infection, characterized by an initial hyperinflammatory phase frequently followed by compensatory immunosuppression (CARS). Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a critical, biphasic role: inadequate suppression during early hyperinflammation fails to control cytokine storms, while excessive/persistent activity in late-phase immunosuppression drives immune paralysis and secondary infection susceptibility. This review explores advances in targeting Treg immunoregulation across bacterial, viral, and fungal sepsis, where pathogenic type critically influenced the types of immunoresponses, shaping Treg heterogeneity in terms of phenotype, survival, and function. Understanding this multifaceted Treg biology offers novel therapeutic avenues, highlighting the need to decipher functional heterogeneity and develop precisely timed, pathogen-tailored immunomodulation to safely harness beneficial Treg roles while mitigating detrimental immunosuppression. Midlife Vulnerability and Food Insecurity in Women: Increased Risk of Mental Health Concerns

Background/Objectives: A growing body of literature has demonstrated that living with food insecurity (FI) increases risk for mental health concerns in addition to nutritional deficits (e.g., suboptimal micronutrient consumption, excessive macronutrient consumption, malnutrition). Yet, research is needed to improve our understanding of subpopulations potentially at increased risk for mental health concerns when living in the context of FI. The current study examined psychosocial health across women of different developmental life stages all living with FI. Methods: Female clients of a large, urban food bank (N = 680) living with FI completed measures of mental health and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in a cross-sectional design conducted on site at the food bank. Results: Consistent with past research, FI severity was correlated with poorer psychosocial health across all variables. A multivariate analysis of covariance compared women living with FI across 4 developmental life stages (young adult, early midlife, late midlife, and older adult; age range = 18–94 years), controlling for FI severity and race/ethnicity, on outcomes related to mental health and HRQOL. Women in early and late midlife reported higher anxiety, eating disorder symptoms, and eating-related psychosocial impairment than younger and older women. Conclusions: The mental health toll of living with FI is profound; midlife may comprise a developmental period of increased vulnerability to experience this mental health burden of living with FI for women. Thus, efforts are needed to develop innovative pathways for interventions to support the mental health of midlife women living with FI, likely involving multi-level and/or multicomponent approaches to resource access. Korea has a high population density, considering the size of its territory. Therefore, the importance of convenient and comfortable apartment buildings and high-rise residential–commercial complex buildings has been rising. In addition, because of the improvement in the standard of living along with continuous national economic growth, the interest in well-being and the expectation of a quiet life with a comfortable and pleasant residential environment have also been increasing. However, Koreans have a lifestyle involving sitting on the floor, so floor impact noise has been occurring more and more frequently. Because of this, neighborly disputes have been a serious social problem. And lately, damage and disputes from noise between floors have been increasing much more. The present work, therefore, used waste tire chips as a resilient material for reducing floor impact noise in order to recycle waste tires effectively. Also, a compounded resilient material, which combines EPS (expanded polystyrene), a flat resilient material on the upper part, with waste tire chips for the lower part, was developed. After constructing waste tire chips at a standardized test building, experiments with both light-weight and heavy-weight floor impact noise were performed. The tests confirmed that waste tire chips, when used as a resilient material, can effectively reduce both light-weight and heavy-weight floor impact noise. Full article

Background/Objectives: In late 2019, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a pandemic called the ‘coronavirus disease 2019’ (COVID-19). After the acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, many individuals (up to 33%) complained of unexplained symptoms involving multiple organ systems and were diagnosed as having Long COVID-19 (LC-19). Currently, LC-19 is inadequately defined, requiring the formation of consistent diagnostic parameters to provide a foundation for ongoing and future studies of epidemiology, risk factors, clinical characteristics, and therapy. LC-19 represents a significant burden on multiple levels. The reduced ability of workers to return to work or compromised work efficiency has led to consequences at national, economic, and societal levels by increasing dependence on community services. On a personal scale, the isolation and helplessness caused by the disease and its subsequent impact on the patient’s mental health and quality of life are incalculable. Methods: In this paper, we used Walker and Avants’ eight-step approach to perform a concept analysis of the term “Long COVID-19” and define its impact across these parameters. Results: Using this methodology, we provide an improved definition of LC-19 by connecting the clinical symptomology with previously under-addressed factors, such as mental, psychological, economic, and social effects. This definition of LC-19 features can help improve diagnostic procedures and help plan relevant healthcare services. Conclusions: LC-19 represents a complex and pressing public health challenge with diverse symptomology, an unpredictable timeline, and complex pathophysiology. This concept analysis serves as a tool for improving LC-19 definition, but it remains a dynamic disease with evolving diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, requiring deeper investigation and understanding of its long-term effects. Background/Objectives: The rapid ageing of the European population presents growing challenges for mental health, highlighting the need to identify factors that can prevent or delay psychological decline and promote a higher quality of life in later life. This study aims to provide an updated and comprehensive overview of mental health among older adults in Europe by examining the prevalence of depressive symptoms and identifying key associated factors. Methods: We analysed data from individuals (n = 45,601) aged 65 years and older across 27 European countries and Israel who participated in Wave 9 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). This study assessed the prevalence of depressive symptoms, which were evaluated using the EURO-D scale (score range: 0–12), with a cut-off of ≥4 indicating clinically relevant symptoms. It also explored associations with sociodemographic characteristics, physical health, behavioural factors, social participation, internet skills and living conditions. Results: Our findings confirm that depressive symptoms remain highly prevalent among older adults in Europe, with 35.1% of women and 21.5% of men affected, reflecting persistent gender disparities in mental health. Depression in later life was significantly associated with poor physical health, loneliness and lower quality of life. Conversely, moderate involvement in grandchild care and in social participation emerged as potential protective factors. Conclusions: Late-life depression has substantial implications for both mental and physical well-being. Our findings suggest that social integration, gender related factors and physical health are closely associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. These associations highlight the importance of considering these domains when designing interventions and policies aimed at promoting mental health in ageing populations. Full article

Background and Objectives: Thailand’s demographic shift toward an aging population increases vulnerability among older adults to the long-term mental health effects of childhood trauma. While childhood adversity is linked to heightened risks of late-life depression and PTSD, the moderating role of resilience remains underexplored in Thai older adults. This study investigated whether resilience moderates the association between childhood trauma and depressive or PTSD symptoms in this population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 201 older patients (mean age 68.6 years) from the Family Medicine and Geriatric Psychiatry Clinics at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. Participants completed validated measures on trauma history, resilience, depression, and PTSD symptoms. A moderation analysis was performed, adjusting for covariates including education, family support, and psychiatric history. Results: The findings revealed that resilience significantly buffered the impact of childhood trauma on depression but did not mitigate PTSD symptoms. Conclusions: These results underscore the protective role of resilience against depression following childhood trauma in older adults, yet also point to its limitations in alleviating trauma-specific responses such as PTSD. This study highlights the need for trauma-informed geriatric mental health strategies and calls for further research on resilience, focusing on cultural context and adaptive mechanisms, including emotion regulation and social connectedness, in older populations. Background/Objectives: Depression, anxiety and apathy are often associated with subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) in people with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD) without cognitive impairment. Cognitive reserve (CR) enhances emotional resilience, allowing people to better cope with stress and emotional challenges, factors affecting quality of life. We aimed to explore the relationship between CR and mood/anxiety in cognitively intact PwPD with and without SCCs. Methods: In this cross-sectional study we enrolled 133 PwPD and normal cognitive function (age 59.8 ± 6.7 years; disease duration 9.0 ± 5.5 years; male/female 84/49). We assessed cognitive reserve (CR scale), subjective cognitive complaints (with PD-CFRS), QoL (PDQ8), mood, anxiety and apathy (BDI-II; STAI, PAS, Apathy scales). We used a t-test to compare groups (with/without SCC; M/F); correlations and moderation analysis to evaluate the relation between CR and behavioral features and the interplay between CR, behavioral discomfort and QoL. Results: The group with SCCs had significantly (p < 0.05) higher scores in PDQ8, Apathy, STAI, PAS-C and BDI-II scales than those with no SCCs. Males with SCCs had higher scores in PDQ8, Apathy scale and BDI-II while females differed in PDQ8 and Apathy scale scores. In the SCC group, late-life CR was negatively correlated with PAS-C (avoidance behavior) and BDI-II; correlations were confirmed in the male group where CR also correlated with PDQ-8 and PAS persistent anxiety. Conclusions: PwPD and SCCs are more depressed and anxious compared to people without SCCs. Furthermore, we found a relationship between depressive symptoms, anxiety and CR: PwPD with SCCs may rely on cognitive reserve to better cope with the feeling of anxiety and depression, especially in male gender. Background/Objectives: The increasing population of childhood cancer survivors presents new challenges for healthcare systems worldwide. While advances in oncological treatments have dramatically improved survival rates, survivors face a broad spectrum of late effects that extend beyond the biological to encompass profound psychological and social dimensions. Methods: This quasi-systematic review synthesizes data from recent studies on adolescent survivors, revealing significant disruptions in cognitive function, mental health, social integration, education, romantic relationships, and vocational outcomes. Results: This review highlights the inadequacy of a solely biomedical model and advocates for a biopsychosocial approach to long-term follow-up care. An emphasis is placed on the necessity of personalized, interdisciplinary, and developmentally informed interventions, especially in countries like Poland, where structured survivorship care models remain underdeveloped. Conclusions: The findings underscore the importance of integrating medical, psychological, and social services to ensure adolescent cancer survivors achieve not only physical recovery but also meaningful life participation and emotional well-being. Background/Objectives: Immune checkpoint inhibitors have significantly transformed the treatment paradigm of advanced melanoma, leading to substantial improvements in survival outcomes. However, this therapeutic success is accompanied by a spectrum of treatment-related adverse events, some of which are increasingly recognised as enduring and non-reversible. Whilst early-onset immune-related toxicities have been well characterized, late-onset toxicities, often emerging in patients with long-term disease control, remain understudied and are frequently overlooked. Methods: To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a retrospective multicentre study in three UK tertiary referral centres, exploring immune-related adverse events in 246 patients with melanoma who received immune checkpoint inhibitors in the advanced setting. We defined late-onset immune-related adverse events as those occurring at least 3 months after the last cycle of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Results: Although most patients experienced early-onset toxicity, almost 15% of patients developed late-onset immune-related adverse events, including skin rash, colitis, hepatitis, and arthritis, among others. These were often challenging to manage and necessitated the use of systemic steroids. Up to 2% of patients presented ultra-late-onset toxicities, defined as those events occurring at least 12 months after treatment completion. Conclusions: This study provides valuable insights into the characteristics of late-onset immune-related adverse events. To further advance our understanding of these late-onset toxicities, dedicated prospective studies are needed to assess risk factors associated with their development and their impact on quality of life. Additionally, translational research focused on finding predictive biomarkers is essential to identify patients at a higher risk of developing delayed adverse events and to understand how best to manage them. Sporadic Parkinson’s Disease (PD) affects 3% of people over 65 years of age. People are living longer, thanks in large part to improvements in global health technology and health access for non-neurological diseases. Consequently, neurological diseases of senescence, such as PD, are representing an ever-increasing share of global disease burden. There is an intensifying research focus on the processes that underlie these conditions in the hope that neurological decay may be arrested at the earliest time point. The concept of neuronal death linked to ageing- neural senescence- first emerged in the 1800s. By the late 20th century, it was recognized that neurodegeneration was common to all ageing human brains, but in most cases, this process did not lead to clinical disease during life. Conditions such as PD are the result of accelerated neurodegeneration in particular brain foci. In the case of PD, degeneration of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) is especially implicated. Why neural degeneration accelerates in these particular regions remains a point of contention, though current evidence implicates a complex interplay between a vast array of neuronal cell functions, bioenergetic failure, and a dysfunctional brain immunological response. Their complexity is a considerable barrier to disease modification trials, which seek to intercept these maladaptive cell processes. This paper reviews current evidence in the domain of neurodegeneration in Parkinson’s disease, focusing on alpha-synuclein accumulation and deposition and the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in progressive brain changes. Recent approaches to disease modification are discussed, including the prevention or reversal of alpha-synuclein accumulation and deposition, modification of oxidative stress, alteration of maladaptive innate immune processes and reactive cascades, and regeneration of lost neurons using stem cells and growth factors. The limitations of past research methodologies are interrogated, including the difficulty of recruiting patients in the clinically quiescent prodromal phase of sporadic Parkinson’s disease. Recommendations are provided for future studies seeking to identify novel therapeutics with disease-modifying properties. Full article

High mortality rates and poor quality of life result from the late-stage detection and frequent recurrence of gynecological neoplasms. Background/Objectives: The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic analysis of the energy parameters of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of cervical and vulvar lesions, with a focus on stimulating immune responses leading to human papillomavirus (HPV) eradication and lesion regression without adverse effects, such as thermal damage. Methods: A total of 46 peer-reviewed studies published between January 2010 and April 2024 were analyzed. These studies focused on PDT applications for cervical and vulvar lesions, sourced from Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. Results: Although PDT shows promise, significant limitations exist, such as insufficient consideration of individual tumor characteristics, restricted treatment depths, and the heterogeneous distribution and low selectivity of photosensitizer (PS) accumulation in tumors. Tumor hypoxia further reduces PDT’s effectiveness, and most studies overlook immune system activation, which is crucial for targeting HPV infections and improving antitumor responses. Conclusions: Advancing the research into PDT’s molecular and cellular mechanisms, optimizing the immune response stimulation, and improving the PS and delivery methods could enhance the safety and effectiveness of cervical and vulvar neoplasm treatments. The use of personalized PDT parameters may reduce the side effects and enhance the outcomes for patients suffering from gynecological diseases. Full article

Belgian Case Series Identifies Non-Cow Mammalian Milk Allergy as a Rare, Severe, Selective, and Late-Onset Condition

Background: Cow’s milk allergy (CMA) is the most common food allergy in children, typically resolving by adolescence. In contrast, the clinical spectrum of allergies to non-cow mammalian milk and their patterns of IgE cross-reactivity are less well documented. Nutritional differences between various mammalian milks may also impact dietary management in milk-allergic patients. Objectives: To characterize clinical features, onset age, and IgE cross-reactivity patterns of non-cow mammalian milk allergies in adult patients seen at a tertiary allergy center, and to compare these findings with published cases. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients included in the “Extended Laboratory Investigation for Rare Causes of Anaphylaxis study” with mammalian milk allergy was performed using clinical history, skin testing, and serum-specific IgE measurements. Cross-reactivity patterns were assessed in selected cases using immunoblotting, specific IgE inhibition, and basophil activation testing, and compared with published reports of non-cow mammalian milk allergy. Results: In our case series of 22 patients with mammalian milk allergy and 10 healthy control subjects, 3 patients were identified with isolated adult-onset non-cow mammalian milk allergy (n = 1 buffalo milk; n = 2 mare milk), confirmed via immunoblotting and basophil activation testing. Streptavidin-based specific IgE measurement for buffalo cheese was positive in the buffalo milk allergic patient. The literature review identified 82 cases of non-cow mammalian milk allergy. These cases typically showed late onset (mean age 8.6 years; range 1–70 years), severe reactions (CoFAR (Consortium for Food Allergy Research) grade 3 or 4 in 66%, and one fatality), and selective sensitization (affecting sheep and/or goat, camel, mare, buffalo, donkey, or combinations thereof in 56, 10, 5, 5, 4, and 2 cases, respectively). Conclusions: Non-cow mammalian milk allergies are rare but generally present later in life with selective IgE cross-reactivity, differing from the broader cross-reactivity observed in CMA. This selectivity may allow for safe dietary alternatives. These findings underscore the need for improved diagnostics and personalized dietary management in this patient population. Full article
