Achieving selective cleavage of specific chemical bonds using ultrafast laser pulses remains a central challenge in ultrafast strong-field molecular physics. Here, we theoretically investigate the coherent control of strong-field dissociation of the heteronuclear molecular ion HD+ initially prepared in vibrationally excited states driven by an ultrashort pulse with a quadratic spectral phase. Our results reveal a pronounced sensitivity of both the total dissociation probability and the branching ratio (H+ + D vs. H + D+) to the chirp rate of the laser pulse. To uncover the underlying physical mechanism, we analyze the population dynamics in the coupled 1sσ and 2pσ electronic states and identify pronounced Rabi oscillations arising from the coherent interplay between multiphoton excitation and field-induced stimulated emission. By tuning the laser chirp rate, these oscillations can be suppressed via quantum interference, thereby reshaping the dissociation dynamics and significantly enhancing the dissociation probability of the H + D+ channel. These findings demonstrate that spectral-phase engineering provides a robust and versatile strategy for selective control of branching ratios in strong-field molecular dissociation. Full article

To determine the structure of carbohydrate polymers using conventional analytical technology, several complicated steps are required. We instead adopted a direct approach without the need for pretreatments, using an intense infrared (IR) laser for carbohydrate analysis. IR free-electron lasers (FELs) driven by a linear accelerator possess unique spectroscopic features, including extensive wavelength tunability and high laser energy in the IR region from 1000 cm−1 (10 μm) to 4000 cm−1 (2.5 μm). FELs can induce IR multiphoton dissociation reactions against various molecules by supplying vibrational excitation energy to the corresponding chemical bonds. Chitin from crayfish and cellulose fiber were irradiated by FELs tuned to νC–O (9.1–9.8 μm), νC–H (3.5 μm), and δH–C–O (7.2 μm) in glycosidic bonds, and their low-molecular-weight sugars were separated, which were revealed by combining synchrotron radiation IR spectroscopy and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. An intense IR laser can be viewed as a “molecular scalpel” for dissecting and directly analyzing the internal components in rigid biopolymers. This method is simple and rapid compared with general analytical techniques. Full article

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the dynamic characteristics of the process of laser fragmentation/laser-induced fluorescence (LF/LIF) of trinitrotoluene traces on a paper surface under synchronized double-pulse laser irradiation. An Nd:YAG-laser (266 nm) was used for the fragmentation of TNT molecules, while fluorescence excitation of their NO fragments was performed using a KrF laser with a generation line of 247.867 nm in the region of the location of the bandhead of the P12 branch of the γ(0, 2) absorption band of the NO molecule. It was shown that the dissociation process of TNT traces has an inertial character and continues after the cessation of the fragmenting laser pulse. It was found that with the delay values between the fragmenting and probing laser pulses in the region of 200 ns, the efficiency of the LF/LIF method can be increased by 12 times. This paper presents the results of an experimental evaluation of the efficiency of two-pulse LF/LIF compared to single-pulse laser exposure, where the fragmentation of TNT molecules and excitation of their NO fragments were simultaneously performed by KrF laser pulses. The possibility of multiple increases in the efficiency of two-pulse LF/LIF with an increase in the energy density of the fragmenting laser radiation was shown. The obtained results are important in terms of increasing the sensitivity and/or range of the LF/LIF method for remote detection of traces of nitrocompounds. Full article

Currently, ultrashort oligopeptides consisting of fewer than eight amino acids represent a cutting-edge frontier in materials science, particularly in the realm of hydrogel formation. By employing solid-phase synthesis with the Fmoc/tBu approach, a novel pentapeptide, FEYNF-NH2, was designed, inspired by a previously studied sequence chosen from hen egg-white lysozyme (FESNF-NH2). Qualitative peptide analysis was based on reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), while further purification was accomplished using solid-phase extraction (SPE). Exact molecular ion confirmation was achieved by matrix-assisted laser desorption–ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS) using two different matrices (HCCA and DHB). Additionally, the molecular ion of interest was subjected to tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) employing collision-induced dissociation (CID) to confirm the synthesized peptide structure. A combination of research techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), fluorescence analysis, transmission electron microscopy, polarized light microscopy, and Congo red staining assay, were carefully employed to glean valuable insights into the self-assembly phenomena and gelation process of the modified FEYNF-NH2 peptide. Furthermore, molecular docking simulations were conducted to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the pentapeptide’s supramolecular assembly formation and intermolecular interactions. Our study provides potential insights into amyloid research and proposes a novel peptide for advancements in materials science. In this regard, in silico studies were performed to explore the FEYNF peptide’s ability to form polyplexes. Full article

The paper investigates the physicochemical processes that occur during laser-induced breakdown in colloids of gadolinium oxide nanoparticles of different concentrations. A monotonic change in the number of optical breakdowns, the average distance between the nearest breakdowns in the track of a single laser pulse, the average plasma size of a single optical breakdown, the integral luminosity of an optical breakdown plasma flash, the intensity of acoustic signals, and the rate of formation of dissociation products—O2, H2, OH, and H2O2—is demonstrated. It is shown that the rate of formation of chemical products of the decomposition of H2O molecules under the action of breakdown when using nanoparticles of rare earth metals, in particular, gadolinium oxide, is the highest compared to other materials. Based on one laser pulse, the rates of formation of chemical products formed during the dissociation of water during laser-induced breakdown of a colloid of gadolinium oxide nanoparticles are 13.13 nmol/pulse for H2, 5.41 nmol/pulse for O2, and 6.98 nmol/pulse for hydrogen peroxide. In the current work, we study the intense laser pulse influences on the behaviors of the first excitonic transition in a core/shell quantum dot submitted to an electric field. Therefore, the exciton binding energy and the mean distance between the correlated electron–hole pair are discussed, considering the electric field and laser strength. Our calculations show that both external fields play significant repulsive effects. Through their effects, they oppose the attractive nature of the Coulomb potential between the correlated pair, which decreases the excitonic binding energy. We also analyze the dissociation process by determining the photo-ionization cross-section (PICS). Our findings show that the peaks of the PICS redshift when the shell thickness ba increases. For a given core radius, the laser and electric field induce a shift toward the low-energy region for the PICS; this displacement is more pronounced for the laser case. Our study also compares simple quantum dots and core/shell quantum dots to show the effect of the inner radius on the obtained results. Our theoretical results can lead to promising applications of exciton-based devices controlled by sizes and external fields. Full article

The direct laser synthesis of periodically nanostructured 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (2D-TMD) films, from single source precursors, is presented here. Laser synthesis of MoS2 and WS2 tracks is achieved by localized thermal dissociation of Mo and W thiosalts, caused by the strong absorption of continuous wave (c.w.) visible laser radiation by the precursor film. Moreover, within a range of irradiation conditions we have observed occurrence of 1D and 2D spontaneous periodic modulation in the thickness of the laser-synthesized TMD films, which in some cases is so extreme that it results in the formation of isolated nanoribbons with a width of ~200 nm and a length of several micrometers. The formation of these nanostructures is attributed to the effect that is known as laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS), which is caused by self-organized modulation of the incident laser intensity distribution due to optical feedback from surface roughness. We have fabricated two terminal photoconductive detectors based on nanostructured and continuous films and we show that the nanostructured TMD films exhibit enhanced photo-response, with photocurrent yield increased by three orders of magnitude as compared to their continuous counterparts. The enteric nervous system (ENS) is an intrinsic network of neuronal ganglia in the intestinal tube with about 100 million neurons located in the myenteric plexus and submucosal plexus. These neurons being affected in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, before pathological changes in the central nervous system (CNS) become detectable is currently a subject of discussion. Understanding how to protect these neurons is, therefore, particularly important. Since it has already been shown that the neurosteroid progesterone mediates neuroprotective effects in the CNS and PNS, it is now equally important to see whether progesterone has similar effects in the ENS. For this purpose, the RT-qPCR analyses of laser microdissected ENS neurons were performed, showing for the first time the expression of the different progesterone receptors (PR-A/B; mPRa, mPRb, PGRMC1) in rats at different developmental stages. This was also confirmed in ENS ganglia using immunofluorescence techniques and confocal laser scanning microscopy. To analyze the potential neuroprotective effects of progesterone in the ENS, we stressed dissociated ENS cells with rotenone to induce damage typical of Parkinson’s disease. The potential neuroprotective effects of progesterone were then analyzed in this system. Treatment of cultured ENS neurons with progesterone reduced cell death by 45%, underscoring the tremendous neuroprotective potential of progesterone in the ENS. The additional administration of the PGRMC1 antagonist AG205 abolished the observed effect, indicating the crucial role of PGRMC1 with regard to the neuroprotective effect of progesterone. Doxorubicin (DOX)-conjugated acid-degradable polyrotaxanes (PRXs) were designed as supramolecular drug carriers capable of releasing drugs in acidic cellular environments. Acid-degradable PRXs composed of α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) as a cyclic molecule, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a polymer axis, and N-triphenylmethyl (N-Trt) groups as an acid-labile stopper molecules were synthesized and DOX was conjugated with the threaded α-CDs in the PRXs. Because the acid-induced cleavage of N-Trt groups in PRXs leads to PRX dissociation, the DOX-modified α-CDs were released under acidic conditions (pH 5.0). The cytotoxicity of DOX-conjugated PRXs in colon-26 cells revealed significant cell death for DOX-conjugated PRXs after 48 h of treatment. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) analysis revealed that the fluorescence signals derived from DOX-conjugated PRXs were observed in cellular nuclei after 48 h, suggesting that the DOX-modified α-CDs were released and accumulated in cellular nuclei. These results confirmed that acid-degradable PRXs can be utilized as drug carriers capable of releasing drug-modified α-CDs in acidic lysosomes and eliciting cytotoxicity. Overall, acid-degradable PRXs represent a promising supramolecular framework for the delivery and intracellular release of drug-modified α-CDs, and PRX–drug conjugates are expected to contribute to the development of pH-responsive drug carriers for cancer therapy. As a type II transmembrane serine protease, fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is specifically expressed on the surface of fibroblasts associated with a variety of epithelial-derived malignancies such as pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer. It participates in the processes of tumorigenesis, progression, and immunosuppression. FAP constitutes an important target for tumor treatment; however, the current studies on FAP are mainly related to structural characteristics, enzymatic properties, and biological functions, and aptamers of FAP have not been investigated. In this work, by using recombinant human FAP as the target, five candidate aptamers, which are AptFAP-A1, AptFAP-A2, AptFAP-A3, AptFAP-A4, and AptFAP-A5, were selected by capillary electrophoresis–systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (CE-SELEX), and their secondary structures were predicted to be mainly stem-loop. Moreover, the CE-laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method was used to determine the equilibrium dissociation constant KD values between the FAP protein and candidate aptamers, and the KD value was in the low molar range. Finally, Cy5-labeled aptamers were co-incubated with human pancreatic cancer-associated fibroblasts highly expressing FAP protein, and confocal microscopy imaging showed that aptamer AptFAP-A4 had the highest affinities with the cells. The FAP aptamers screened in this study provide a promising direction for the development of rapid tumor diagnosis and targeted therapy. Full article

Polycyclic aromatic sulfur-containing compounds are widely distributed in oil, especially in its low-volatile and heavy fractions (resins, asphaltenes), and this dictates the need for their determination when reliable methods for sulfur removing, cleaning and processing oil are developed. In these cases, “soft” ionization mass spectrometry methods, based on electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), are particularly effective. However, aromatic sulfur-containing compounds have low polarity and cannot be readily ionized by these methods. To overcome the problem, their preliminary conversion into sulfonium salts by the action of alkyl iodides and a silver-containing agent is widely used. In the process of developing more economical derivatization methods, we found a rather unexpected possibility of implementing S-alkylation of organic sulfides with commercial polydialkylsiloxanes (alkyl = CH3 or C2H5) in the presence of triflic acid (CF3SO3H) as a superacid co-alkylating agent. For homologous dibenzothiophenes as a typical model representative of petroleum sulfur-containing aromatic compounds, ESI and MALDI mass spectra exhibited the signals of corresponding S-alkylsulfonium salts with a high signal-to-noise ratio. A rational mechanism for the described chemical transformation is proposed, including the indispensable activation by triflic acid and the cleavage of the Si-C bond. Specific collision-induced dissociation of corresponding S-alkylated sulfonium cations is considered. The applicability of the derivatization approach to the analysis of petroleum products by high-resolution mass spectrometry is demonstrated. Full article

The gas-phase reaction dynamics and kinetics in a laser induced plasma are very much dependent on the interactions of the evaporated target material and the background gas. For metal (M) and metal–oxygen (MO) species ablated in an Ar and O2 background, the expansion dynamics in O2 are similar to the expansion dynamics in Ar for M+ ions with an MO+ dissociation energy smaller than O2. This is different for metal ions with an MO+ dissociation energy larger than for O2. This study shows that the plume expansion in O2 differentiates itself from the expansion in Ar due to the formation of MO+ species. It also shows that at a high oxygen background pressure, the preferred kinetic energy range to form MO species as a result of chemical reactions in an expanding plasma, is up to 5 eV. Full article

Laser-Induced Thermionic Vacuum Arc (LTVA) provides a better way to produce uniform metallic thin films than the classical Thermionic Vacuum Arc (TVA) method. In Ti-doped chromium thin films produced using LTVA, the amorphous chromium is superimposed with small bcc chromium nanoparticles. These amorphous/crystalline structures with small crystallites induce lower roughness and electrical resistivity, reducing electron–phonon scattering and increasing charge transport across LTVA thin films. A significant shift in resistivity for the LTVA samples is observed due to electron scattering on the phonon–crystalline structures in the TVA samples which exhibit larger crystallites. Meanwhile, the wettability measurements reveal a higher contact angle, resulting in a lower surface free energy and consecutively lower dissociation energy for the LTVA-produced thin films than the TVA samples. A new method of hydrogen generation from water, by irradiation with CW infrared laser diode of graphene scaffold immersed in solution, is reported. Hydrogen production was extremely efficient upon admixing NaCl into water. The efficiency of hydrogen production increased exponentially with laser power. It was shown that hydrogen production was highly efficient when the intense white light emission induced by laser irradiation of graphene foam was occurring. The mechanism of laser-induced dissociation of water is discussed. It was found that hydrogen production was extremely high, at about 80%, and assisted by a small emission of O2, CO and CO2 gases. The effect of KrF excimer laser irradiation on the optical and electrical properties of epitaxial wafers with a p-GaN surface were investigated at different laser energy densities and pulse numbers. The laser-irradiated samples were annealed in oxygen. The laser irradiation-induced changes in optical and electrical properties of GaN epitaxial wafers were examined using PL, I–V, XPS, SIMS, and Hall effect measurements. Experimental results show that under an appropriate laser-irradiated condition, optical and electrical properties of the samples were improved to different degrees. The samples which were annealed after laser irradiation have better electrical properties such as the hole concentration and sheet resistance than those without annealing. We hypothesize that the pulsed KrF excimer laser irradiation dissociates the Mg–H complexes and annealing treatment allows the hydrogen to diffuse out more completely under the oxygen atmosphere at a proper temperature, by which the crystalline symmetry of GaN is improved. Under appropriate laser conditions and O2-activated annealing, the light output of the laser-irradiated GaN-based LED sample is about 1.44 times that of a conventional LED at 20 mA. It is found that the wall-plug efficiency is 10% higher at 20 mA and the reverse leakage current is 80% lower at 5 V. Full article
