Prognostic and Health Management (PHM) strategies are gaining increasingly more traction in almost every field of engineering, offering stakeholders advanced capabilities in system monitoring, anomaly detection, and predictive maintenance. Primary flight control actuators are safety-critical elements within aircraft flight control systems (FCSs), and currently, they are mainly based on Electro-Hydraulic Actuators (EHAs) or Electro-Hydrostatic Actuators (EHSAs). Despite the widespread diffusion of PHM methodologies, the application of these technologies for EHAs is still somewhat limited, and the available information is often restricted to the industrial sector. To fill this gap, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of state-of-the-art EHA PHM strategies for aerospace applications, as well as their limitations and further developments through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). An objective and clear methodology, combined with the use of attractive and informative graphics, guides the reader towards a thorough investigation of the state of the art, as well as the challenges in the field that limit a wider implementation. It is deemed that the information presented in this review will be useful for new researchers and industry engineers as it provides indications for conducting research in this specific and still not very investigated sector. Actuators and power electronics are fundamental components of modern control systems, enabling high-precision functionality, enhanced energy efficiency, and sophisticated automation. This study investigates evolving research trends and thematic developments in these areas spanning the last two decades (2005–2024). This study analyzed 1840 peer-reviewed abstracts obtained from the Web of Science database using BERTopic modeling, which integrates transformer-based sentence embeddings with UMAP for dimensionality reduction and HDBSCAN for clustering. The approach also employed class-based TF-IDF calculations, intertopic distance visualization, and hierarchical clustering to clarify topic structures. The analysis revealed a steady increase in research publications, with a marked surge post-2015. From 2005 to 2014, investigations were mainly focused on established areas including piezoelectric actuators, adaptive control, and hydraulic systems. In contrast, the 2015–2024 period saw broader diversification into new topics such as advanced materials, robotic mechanisms, resilient systems, and networked actuator control through communication protocols. The structural topic analysis indicated a shift from a unified to a more differentiated and specialized spectrum of research themes. This study offers a rigorous, data-driven outlook on the increasing complexity and diversity of actuator and power electronics research. The findings are pertinent for researchers, engineers, and policymakers aiming to advance state-of-the-art, sustainable industrial technologies. Full article

The electrification of road vehicles is a relatively mature sector, while other areas of mobility, such as construction machinery, are just beginning their transition to electric solutions. This work presents the design and realization of an integrated drive system specifically developed for retrofitting fan drives in heavy machinery, like bulldozers and tractors, utilizing existing 48 VDC batteries. By replacing or complementing internal combustion and hydraulic technologies with electric solutions, significant advantages in efficiency, reduced environmental impact, and versatility can be achieved. Focusing on the fan drive system addresses the critical challenge of thermal management in high ambient temperatures and harsh environments, particularly given the high current requirements for 3kW-class applications. A sensorless architecture has been selected to enhance reliability by eliminating mechanical position sensors. The developed fan drive has been extensively tested both on a braking bench and in real-world applications, demonstrating its effectiveness and robustness. Future work will extend this prototype to electrify additional onboard hydraulic motors in these machines, further advancing the electrification of heavy-duty equipment and improving overall efficiency and environmental impact. A mass abatement scalable system through managed aquifer recharge (MAR-MASS) improves mass extraction from groundwater with a variable-density flow. This method is superior to conventional injection systems because it promotes uniform mass displacement, reduces density gradients, and increases mass extraction efficiency over time. Simulations of various scenarios involving hydrogeologic variables, including hydraulic conductivity, vertical anisotropy, specific yield, mechanical dispersion, molecular diffusion, and mass concentration in aquifers, have identified critical variables and parameters influencing mass transport interactions to optimize the system. MAR-MASS is adaptable across hydrogeologic conditions in aquifers that are 25–75 m thick, comprising unconsolidated materials with hydraulic conductivities between 5 and 100 m/d. It is effective in scenarios near coastal areas or in aquifers with variable-density flows within the continent, with mass concentrations of salts or solutes ranging from 3.5 to 35 kg/m3. This system employs a modular approach that offers scalable and adaptable solutions for mass extraction at specific locations. The integration of programming tools, such as Python 3.13.2, along with technological strategies utilizing parallelization techniques and high-performance computing, has facilitated the development and validation of MAR-MASS in mass extraction with remarkable efficiency. This study confirmed the utility of these tools for performing calculations, analyzing information, and managing databases in hydrogeologic models. Combining these technologies is critical for achieving precise and efficient results that would not be achievable without them, emphasizing the importance of an advanced technological approach in high-level hydrogeologic research. By enhancing groundwater quality within a comparatively short time frame, expanding freshwater availability, and supporting sustainable aquifer recharge practices, MAR-MASS is essential for improving water resource management. Hydraulic fracturing is a crucial technology for developing unconventional oil and gas resources. However, conventional geophysical methods struggle to efficiently and accurately image proppant-connected channels created by hydraulic fracturing. The borehole-to-surface electromagnetic imaging method (BSEM) overcomes this limitation by utilizing a controlled cased well source. Placing the source close to the target reservoir and deploying multi-component receivers on the surface enable high-precision lateral monitoring, providing an effective approach for dynamic monitoring of hydraulic fracturing operations. This study focuses on key aspects of forward modeling for BSEM. A three-dimensional finite-volume method based on the Yee grid was used to simulate the borehole-to-surface electromagnetic system incorporating metal casings, validating the method of simulating metal casing using multiple line sources. The simulation of the observation system and the frequency-domain electromagnetic monitoring simulation based on actual well data confirm BSEM’s high sensitivity for monitoring deep subsurface formations. Critically, well casing exerts a substantial influence on surface electromagnetic responses, while the electromagnetic contribution from line sources emulating perforation zones necessitates explicit incorporation within data processing workflows. The stretch film production is highly energy intensive. The components of the technological line are powered by electrical energy, and the heat is used to change the physical state of the raw material (granules). The raw material is poured into FCR (the first calender roller). To solidify the liquid raw material, the calendar must be cooled. The low-temperature heat, treated as waste heat, has dissipated in the atmosphere. Technological innovations were proposed: (a) the raw material comprises raw material (primary) and up to 80% recyclate (waste originating mainly from agriculture), (b) the use of low-temperature waste heat (the cooling of FCR in the process of foil stretch production). A heat recovery line based on two compressor heat pumps (HP, hydraulically coupled) was designed. The waste heat (by low-temperature HP) was transformed into high-temperature heat (by high-temperature HP) and used to prepare the raw material. The proposed technological line enables the management of difficult-to-manage post-production waste (i.e., agriculture and other economic sectors). It reduces energy consumption and raw materials from non-renewable sources (CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions are reducing). It implements a closed-loop economy based on renewable energy sources (according to the European Green Deal). Full article

The treatment of contaminants from road infrastructure poses significant challenges due to their variable composition and the high concentrations of chloride ions, heavy metals, and oil-derived substances. Traditional methods for protecting groundwater environments are often insufficient. A promising alternative is permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology, which utilizes recycled materials and construction waste as reactive components within the treatment zone of the ground. This paper delves into the potential of employing a composite (MIX) consisting of modified construction aggregate (as recycled material) and activated carbon (example of reactive material) to address environmental contamination from a mixture of heavy metals and chloride. The research involved chemical modifications of the road aggregate, activated carbon, and their composite, followed by laboratory tests in glass reactors and non-flow batch tests to evaluate the kinetics and chemical equilibrium of the reactions. The adsorption process was stable and conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir, Toth, and Redlich–Peterson isotherm models. Studies using MIX from a heavy metal model solution showed that monolayer adsorption was a key mechanism for removing heavy metals, with strong fits to the Langmuir (R2 > 0.80) and Freundlich models, and optimal efficiencies for Cd and Ni (R2 > 0.90). The best fit, at Cd, Cu, Ni = 0.96, however, was with the Redlich–Peterson isotherm, indicating a mix of physical and chemical adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces. The Toth model was significant for all analytes, fitting Cl and Cd well and Pb and Zn moderately. The modifications made to the composite significantly enhanced its effectiveness in removing the contaminant mixture. The test results demonstrated an average reduction of chloride by 85%, along with substantial removals of heavy metals: lead (Pb) by 90%, cadmium (Cd) by 86%, nickel (Ni) by 85%, copper (Cu) by 81%, and zinc (Zn) by 79%. Further research should focus on the removal of other contaminants and the optimization of magnesium oxide (MgO) dosage. Full article

In this paper, a new solution is proposed for the problem of mooring safety of large ships in complex sea conditions. Firstly, a dual-mode mooring system is designed to adaptively switch between active control and passive energy storage, adjusting the mooring strategy based on real-time sea conditions. Second, a collaborative analysis platform based on AQWA-Python-MATLAB/Simulink was researched and developed. Thirdly, based on the above simulation platform, the performance of the mooring system and the effects of different configurations on the stability of ship motion and dynamic tension of the cable are emphasized. Finally, by comparing the different mooring positions under various sea conditions with the traditional mooring system, the results show that the constant tension mooring system significantly improves the stability and safety of the ship under both conventional and extreme sea conditions, effectively reducing the fluctuation of cable tension. Through the optimization analysis, it is determined that the configuration of bow and stern cables is the optimal solution, which ensures safety while also improving economic benefits. Full article

With the frequent occurrence of global floods, the demand for emergency rescue equipment has grown rapidly. The development and technological innovation of digital hydraulic drive systems (DHDSs) for emergency drainage pumps (EDPs) have become key to improving rescue efficiency. However, EDPs are prone to being affected by random and uncertain loads during operation. To achieve intelligent and efficient rescue operations, a DHDS suitable for EDPs was proposed. Firstly, the configuration and operation mode of the DHDS for EDPs were analyzed. Based on this, a multi-field coupling dynamic simulation platform for the DHDS was constructed. Secondly, the output characteristics of the system under alternating loads were simulated and analyzed. Finally, a test platform for the EDP DHDS was established, and the dynamic characteristics of the system under alternating loads were explored. The results show that as the load torque of the alternating loads increases, the amplitude of the pressure of the motor also increases, the output flow of the hydraulic-controlled proportional reversing valve (HCPRV) changes slightly, and the fluctuation range of the rotational speed of the motor increases. The fluctuation range of the pressure and the rotational speed of the motor are basically not affected by the frequency of alternating loads, but the fluctuation amplitude of the output flow of the HCPRV reduces with the increase in the frequency of alternating loads. This system can respond to changes in load relatively quickly under alternating loads and can return to a stable state in a short time. It has laudable anti-interference ability and output stability. Wide-range electric submersible centrifugal pumps (ESPs) are critical for offshore oilfields but suffer from narrow high-efficiency ranges and frictional losses under dynamic reservoir conditions. This study introduces bio-inspired dimple-type non-smooth surfaces on impeller blades to enhance hydraulic performance. A combined numerical-experimental approach was employed: a 3D CFD model with the k-ω turbulence model analyzed oil–water flow (1:9 ratio) to identify optimal dimple placement, while parametric studies tested diameters (0.6–1.2 mm). Experimental validation used 3D-printed prototypes. Results revealed that dimples on the pressure surface trailing edge reduced boundary layer separation, achieving a 12.98% head gain and 8.55% efficiency improvement at 150 m3/d in simulations, with experimental tests showing an 11.5% head increase and 4.6% efficiency gain at 130 m3/d. The optimal dimple diameter (0.9 mm, 2% of blade chord) balanced performance and manufacturability, demonstrating that bio-inspired surfaces improve ESP efficiency. This work provides practical guidelines for deploying drag reduction technologies in petroleum engineering, with a future focus on wear resistance in abrasive flows. Full article

As a key component in the hydraulic brake system of automobiles, the brake joint directly affects the braking performance and driving safety of the vehicle. Therefore, improving the quality of brake joints is crucial. During the processing, due to the complexity of the welding material and welding process, the weld seam is prone to various defects such as cracks, pores, undercutting, and incomplete fusion, which can weaken the joint and even lead to product failure. Traditional weld seam detection methods include destructive testing and non-destructive testing; however, destructive testing has high costs and long cycles, and non-destructive testing, such as radiographic testing and ultrasonic testing, also have problems such as high consumable costs, slow detection speed, or high requirements for operator experience. In response to these challenges, this article proposes a defect detection and classification method for laser welding seams of automotive brake joints based on machine vision inspection technology. Laser-welded automotive brake joints are subjected to weld defect detection and classification, and image processing algorithms are optimized to improve the accuracy of detection and failure analysis by utilizing the high efficiency, low cost, flexibility, and automation advantages of machine vision technology. This article first analyzes the common types of weld defects in laser welding of automotive brake joints, including craters, holes, and nibbling, and explores the causes and characteristics of these defects. Then, an image processing algorithm suitable for laser welding of automotive brake joints was studied, including pre-processing steps such as image smoothing, image enhancement, threshold segmentation, and morphological processing, to extract feature parameters of weld defects. On this basis, a welding seam defect detection and classification system based on the cascade classifier and AdaBoost algorithm was designed, and efficient recognition and classification of welding seam defects were achieved by training the cascade classifier. The results show that the system can accurately identify and distinguish pits, holes, and undercutting defects in welds, with an average classification accuracy of over 90%. The detection and recognition rate of pit defects reaches 100%, and the detection accuracy of undercutting defects is 92.6%. And the overall missed detection rate is less than 3%, with both the missed detection rate and false detection rate for pit defects being 0%. The average detection time for each image is 0.24 s, meeting the real-time requirements of industrial automation. Compared with infrared and ultrasonic detection methods, the proposed machine-vision-based detection system has significant advantages in detection speed, surface defect recognition accuracy, and industrial adaptability. This provides an efficient and accurate solution for laser welding defect detection of automotive brake joints. Full article

Lab-scale units of each system were constructed using a multi-media matrix (gravel, zeolite, and granular activated carbon), composite native wetland species (Juncus effusus, Iris sp., and Typha angustifolia), carbon-based electrodes (graphite), and standard inoculum for CW and CW–MFC. The MFC system employed carbon-based electrodes and proton-exchange membrane. The experimental design included a parallel operation of all systems treating domestic wastewater under identical hydraulic and organic loading rates. Environmental impacts were quantified across construction and operational phases using life cycle assessment (LCA) with GaBi software 9.2, employing TRACI 2021 and ReCiPe 2016 methods, while techno-economic analysis (TEA) evaluated capital and operational costs. The key results indicate that CW demonstrates the lowest global warming potential (142.26 kg CO2-eq) due to its reliance on natural biological processes. The integrated CW–MFC system achieved enhanced pollutant removal (82.8%, 87.13%, 78.13%, and 90.3% for COD, NO3, TN, and TP) and bioenergy generation of 2.68 kWh, balancing environmental benefits with superior treatment efficiency. In contrast, the stand-alone MFC shows higher environmental burdens, primarily due to energy-intensive material requirements and fabrication processes. TEA results highlight CW as the most cost-effective solution (USD 627/m3), with CW–MFC emerging as a competitive alternative when considering environmental benefits and operational efficiencies (USD 718/m3). This study highlights the potential of hybrid systems, such as CW–MFC, to advance sustainable wastewater treatment technologies by minimizing environmental impacts and enhancing resource recovery, supporting their broader adoption in future water management strategies. Future research should focus on optimizing materials and energy use to improve scalability and feasibility. Full article

Harnessing Bacillus subtilis–Moss Synergy: Carbon–Structure Optimization for Erosion-Resistant Barrier Formation in Cold Mollisols

Soil degradation exerts profound impacts on soil ecological functions, global food security, and human development, making the development of effective technologies to mitigate degradation a critical research focus. Microorganisms play a leading role in rehabilitating degraded land, improving soil hydraulic properties, and enhancing soil structural stability. Mosses contribute to soil particle fixation through their unique rhizoid structures; however, the mechanisms underlying their interactions in mixed inoculation remain unclear. Therefore, this study addresses soil and water loss caused by rainfall erosion in the cold black soil region. We conducted controlled laboratory experiments cultivating Bacillus subtilis and cold-adapted moss species, evaluating the erosion mitigation effects of different biological treatments under gradient slopes (3°, 6°, 9°) and rainfall intensities (70 mm h−1, 120 mm h−1), and elucidating their carbon-based structural reinforcement mechanism. The results indicated that compared to the control group, Treatment C significantly increased the mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) of soil aggregates by 121.6% and 76.75%, respectively. In separate simulated rainfall events at 70 mm h−1 and 120 mm h−1, Treatment C reduced soil loss by 95.70% and 96.75% and decreased runoff by 38.31% and 67.21%, respectively. Crucially, the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loss rate in Treatment C was only 21.98%, significantly lower than that in Treatment A (32.32%), Treatment B (22.22%), and the control group (51.07%)—representing a 59.41% reduction compared to the control. This demonstrates the following: (1) Bacillus subtilis enhances microbial metabolism, driving carbon conversion into stable pools, while mosses reduce carbon leaching via physical barriers, synergistically forming a dual “carbon protection–structural reinforcement” barrier. (2) The combined inoculation optimizes soil structure by increasing the proportion of large soil particles and enhancing aggregate stability, effectively suppressing soil loss even under extreme rainfall erosion. This study elucidates, for the first time, the biological pathway through which microbe–moss interactions achieve synergistic carbon sequestration and erosion resistance by regulating aggregate formation and pore water dynamics. It provides a scalable “carbon–structure”-optimized biotechnology system (co-inoculation of Bacillus subtilis and moss) for the ecological restoration of the cold black soil region. Full article

To address the technical problems of broad droplet size spectrum, insufficient atomization uniformity, and spray drift in plant protection unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications, this study developed a novel two-stage aerial electrostatic spraying device based on the coupled mechanisms of hydraulic atomization and electrostatic induction, and, through the integration of three-dimensional numerical simulation and additive manufacturing technology, a new two-stage inductive charging device was designed on the basis of the traditional hydrodynamic nozzle structure, and a synergistic optimization study of the charging effect and atomization characteristics was carried out systematically. With the help of a charge ratio detection system and Malvern laser particle sizer, spray pressure (0.25–0.35 MPa), charging voltage (0–16 kV), and spray height (100–1000 mm) were selected as the key parameters, and the interaction mechanism of each parameter on the droplet charge ratio (C/m) and the particle size distribution (Dv50) was analyzed through the Box–Behnken response surface experimental design. The experimental data showed that when the charge voltage was increased to 12 kV, the droplet charge-to-mass ratio reached a peak value of 1.62 mC/kg (p < 0.01), which was 83.6% higher than that of the base condition; the concentration of the particle size distribution of the charged droplets was significantly improved; charged droplets exhibited a 23.6% reduction in Dv50 (p < 0.05) within the 0–200 mm core atomization zone below the nozzle, with the coefficient of variation of volume median diameter decreasing from 28.4% to 16.7%. This study confirms that the two-stage induction structure can effectively break through the charge saturation threshold of traditional electrostatic spraying, which provides a theoretical basis and technical support for the optimal design of electrostatic spraying systems for plant protection UAVs. This technology holds broad application prospects in agricultural settings such as orchards and farmlands. It can significantly enhance the targeted deposition efficiency of pesticides, reducing drift losses and chemical usage, thereby enabling agricultural enterprises to achieve practical economic benefits, including reduced operational costs, improved pest control efficacy, and minimized environmental pollution, while generating environmental benefits.
