This study proposes an innovative Thermodynamic Activity Controlled Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (TAC-HCCI) strategy for diesel–natural gas dual-fuel engines, aiming to achieve high thermal efficiency while maintaining low emissions. By employing numerical simulation methods, the effects of the intake pressure, intake temperature, EGR rate, intake valve closing timing, diesel injection timing, diesel injection pressure, and diesel injection quantity on engine combustion, energy distribution, and emission characteristics were systematically investigated. Through a comprehensive analysis of optimized operating conditions, a high-efficiency and low-emission TAC-HCCI combustion technology for dual-fuel engines was developed. The core mechanism of TAC-HCCI combustion control was elucidated through an analysis of the equivalence ratio and temperature distribution of the in-cylinder mixture. The results indicate that under the constraints of PCP ≤ 30 ± 1 MPa and RI ≤ 5 ± 0.5 MW/m2, the TAC-HCCI technology achieves a gross indicated mean effective pressure (IMEPg) of 24.0 bar, a gross indicated thermal efficiency (ITEg) of up to 52.0%, and indicated specific NOx emissions (ISNOx) as low as 1.0 g/kW∙h. To achieve low combustion loss, reduced heat transfer loss, and high thermal efficiency, it is essential to ensure the complete combustion of the mixture while maintaining low combustion temperatures. This research develops a dual physics-based machine learning system to forecast fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for a 100 m oil tanker across six operational scenarios: Original, Paint, Advanced Propeller, Fin, Bulbous Bow, and Combined. The combination of hydrodynamic calculations with Monte Carlo simulations provides a solid foundation for training machine learning models, particularly in cases where dataset restrictions are present. The XGBoost model demonstrated superior performance compared to Support Vector Regression, Gaussian Process Regression, Random Forest, and Shallow Neural Network models, achieving near-zero prediction errors that closely matched physics-based calculations. The physics-based analysis demonstrated that the Combined scenario, which combines hull coatings with bulbous bow modifications, produced the largest fuel consumption reduction (5.37% at 15 knots), followed by the Advanced Propeller scenario. The results demonstrate that user inputs (e.g., engine power: 870 kW, speed: 12.7 knots) match the Advanced Propeller scenario, followed by Paint, which indicates that advanced propellers or hull coatings would optimize efficiency. The obtained insights help ship operators modify their operational parameters and designers select essential modifications for sustainable operations. The model maintains its strength at low speeds, where fuel consumption is minimal, making it applicable to other oil tankers. The hybrid approach provides a new tool for maritime efficiency analysis, yielding interpretable results that support International Maritime Organization objectives, despite starting with a limited dataset. The model requires additional research to enhance its predictive accuracy using larger datasets and real-time data collection, which will aid in achieving global environmental stewardship. This study presents a data-driven methodology to optimize the operational efficiency of a tugboat equipped with a Voith-Schneider Propeller (VSP) based on full-scale fuel consumption and vessel performance data. The objective is to identify optimal combinations of engine RPM and propeller pitch to reduce fuel consumption during low-demand phases without compromising maneuverability. Sea trials were conducted under controlled conditions using a dual flowmeter system and onboard speed measurements. The data enabled the construction of performance curves, efficiency ratios, and interpolated maps of fuel consumption. Optimal configurations were identified across defined speed ranges, and continuous efficiency zones were visualized through iso-consumption and contour plots. The results reveal a nonlinear relationship between propeller pitch, speed, and fuel demand, with maximum efficiency occurring at medium-to-high pitch values and speeds between 3 and 6 knots. This methodology provides a replicable tool for energy management in port operations and supports informed decisions during accompanying operations and standby periods. Efficiency differences over 300% between RPM–pitch settings were found, highlighting the operational impact of informed configuration choices. Moreover, the structured dataset and visual analysis framework lay the groundwork for future digital twin models aimed at enhancing operational efficiency in VSP-powered tugboats. Full article

This research analyzes the influence of hydroxy on pure diesel and blends of palm oil and coffee husk biodiesel with percentages of 15% and 20%. The experimental tests were carried out in a stationary diesel engine, where the torque and speed varied from 3–7 Nm and 3000–3600 rpm. Hydroxy was used as a secondary fuel with a volumetric flow injection of 4 and 8 lpm. The injection of hydroxy can reduce the BSFC and increase the BTE of the engine when running on pure diesel and biodiesel blends. The results show a maximum decrease of 11.66%, 11.28%, and 10.94% in BSFC when hydroxy is injected into D100, D85P10C5, and D80P10C10 fuels. In the case of BTE, maximum increases of 13.37%, 12.84%, and 12.34% were obtained for the above fuels. The fuels D100 + 8 lpm, D85P10C5 + 8 lpm, and D80P10C10 + 8 lpm achieved maximum energy efficiencies of 28.16%, 27.58%, and 27.32%, respectively. In the case of exergy efficiency, maximum values of 26.39%, 25.83%, and 25.58% were obtained. The environmental and social costs of CO, CO2, and HC emissions are significantly reduced with the addition of hydroxy in pure diesel and biodiesel blends from palm oil and coffee husk. The injection of a volumetric flow rate of 8 l/min results in reductions of 11.66%, 10.61%, and 10.94% in operational cost when the engine is fueled with D100, D85P10C5, and D80P10C10, respectively, complying with standards essential for safe engine operation. In general, the research conducted indicates that hydroxy injection is a viable alternative for reducing fuel consumption and improving engine efficiency when using biodiesel blends made from palm oil and coffee husk. Driven by stringent emission regulations, advanced combustion modes utilizing turbulent jet ignition technology are pivotal for enhancing the performance of marine low-speed natural gas dual-fuel engines. This review focuses on three novel combustion modes, yielding key conclusions: (1) Compared to the conventional DJCDC mode, the TJCDC mode exhibits a significantly higher swirl ratio and turbulence kinetic energy in the main chamber during initial combustion. This promotes natural gas jet development and combustion acceleration, leading to shorter ignition delay, reduced combustion duration, and a combustion center (CA50) positioned closer to the Top Dead Center (TDC), alongside higher peak cylinder pressure and a faster early heat release rate. Energetically, while TJCDC incurs higher heat transfer losses, it benefits from lower exhaust energy and irreversible exergy loss, indicating greater potential for useful work extraction, albeit with slightly higher indicated specific NOx emissions. (2) In the high-compression ratio TJCPC mode, the Liquid Pressurized Natural Gas (LPNG) injection parameters critically impact performance. Delaying the start of injection (SOI) or extending the injection duration degrades premixing uniformity and increases unburned methane (CH4) slip, with the duration effects showing a load dependency. Optimizing both the injection timing and duration is, therefore, essential for emission control. (3) Increasing the excess air ratio delays the combustion phasing in TJCPC (longer ignition delay, extended combustion duration, and retarded CA50). However, this shift positions the heat release more optimally relative to the TDC, resulting in significantly improved indicated thermal efficiency. This work provides a theoretical foundation for optimizing high-efficiency, low-emission combustion strategies in marine dual-fuel engines. Full article

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is increasingly used as a marine fuel due to its capacity to significantly reduce emissions of particulate matter, sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), compared to conventional fuels. In addition, LNG combustion produces less carbon dioxide (CO2) than conventional marine fuels, and the use of non-fossil LNG offers further potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, this benefit can be partially offset by methane slip—the release of unburned methane in engine exhaust—which has a much higher global warming potential than CO2. This study presents an experimental evaluation of methane emissions from a RoPax vessel powered by low-pressure dual-fuel four-stroke engines with a direct mechanical propulsion system. Methane slip was measured directly during onboard testing and combined with a year-long analysis of engine operation using an Engine Load Monitoring (ELM) method. The yearly average methane slip coefficient (Cslip) obtained was 1.57%, slightly lower than values reported in previous studies on cruise ships (1.7%), and significantly lower than the default values specified by the FuelEU (3.1%) Maritime regulation and IMO (3.5%) LCA guidelines. This result reflects the ship’s operational profile, characterized by long crossings at high and stable engine loads. This study provides results that could support more representative emission assessments and can contribute to ongoing regulatory discussions. Full article

The maritime sector faces urgent decarbonisation pressures due to regulatory instruments, such as the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), which mandates reductions in greenhouse gas emissions per transport work. This paper investigates the challenge of identifying CII-compliant strategies that are also financially viable for UK shipowners. To address this, operational and technical data from UK-flagged vessels over 5000 GT are analysed using a capital budgeting framework. This includes scenario-based evaluation of speed reduction, payload limitation, and retrofitting with dual-fuel LNG and methanol engines. The analysis integrates carbon taxation, and pilot fuel use to assess impacts on emissions and profitability. The findings reveal that while the short-term operational measures examined offer modest gains, long-term compliance and financial performance are best achieved through targeted retrofitting supported by carbon taxes and favourable market conditions. The study provides actionable insights for shipowners and policymakers seeking to align commercial viability with regulatory obligations under the evolving CII framework. Full article

This study investigates the impact of different combustion control strategies on marine engine combustion and emission characteristics at a high ammonia energy ratio. Compared to the strategy of maintaining a constant fuel injection duration, the strategy of keeping the fuel injection pressure constant allows the kinetic energy of diesel to remain at a higher level. This results in an increase in combustion efficiency and indicated the thermal efficiency of the engine, while also reducing CO2 and soot emissions. However, when the ammonia energy ratio increases to more than 50%, the indicated thermal efficiency starts to decrease along with the increase in the emissions of N2O and unburned ammonia. To address these issues, one of the potential means is to improve the in-cylinder combustion environment by increasing the in-cylinder gas temperature. This can enhance combustion efficiency and ultimately optimize the performance and emission characteristics of dual-fuel engines, which results in an increase in the combustion efficiency to 98% and indicated thermal efficiency to 54.47% at a relatively high ammonia energy ratio of 60%. Emission results indicate that N2O emissions decrease from 1099 ppm to 25 ppm, while unburned ammonia emissions drop from 16016 ppm to 100 ppm. Eventually, the greenhouse gas emissions were reduced by about 85.3% in comparison with the baseline case. Full article

This paper presents an innovative engine optimization model integrated with a friction fitting tool to enhance the accuracy of computed performance for a marine dual-fuel engine. The focus is on determining the terms of the Chen–Flynn correlation—an empirical engine friction model—to improve the precision of friction and performance predictions. The developed model employs WAVE, a 1D engine simulation software, coupled with a nonlinear optimizer to identify the optimal configuration of key parameters, including the turbocharger, injection system, combustion behavior, and friction model. The optimization procedure maximizes the air–fuel ratio (AFR) within the engine while adhering to various predefined constraints. The model is applied to four operational points along the propeller curve, with the optimized results subsequently integrated into a friction fitting tool. This tool predicts the terms of the Chen–Flynn correlation through an updated procedure, achieving highly accurate results with a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 99.88%, eliminating the need for experimental testing. The optimized friction model provides a reliable foundation for future studies and applications, enabling precise friction predictions across various engine types and fuel compositions. Full article

Hydrogen–gasoline dual-fuel spark ignition (SI) engines represent a promising transitional solution toward cleaner combustion and reduced carbon emissions. In a previous study, a predictive engine model was developed to simulate the performance and combustion characteristics of such systems; however, its accuracy was constrained by the use of estimated combustion parameters. This study presents an experimental validation based on high-resolution in-cylinder pressure measurements performed on a naturally aspirated SI engine operating with a 20% hydrogen energy share. The objectives are twofold: (1) to refine the combustion model using empirically derived combustion metrics, and (2) to evaluate the feasibility of moderate hydrogen enrichment in a stock engine configuration. To facilitate a more accurate understanding of how key combustion parameters evolve under different operating conditions, Vibe function was fitted to the ensemble-averaged heat release rate curves computed from 100 consecutive engine cycles at each static full-load operating point. This approach enabled the extraction of stable and representative metrics, including the mass fraction burned at 50% (MFB50) and combustion duration, which were then used to recalibrate the predictive combustion model. In addition, cycle-to-cycle variation and combustion duration were also investigated in the dual-fuel mode. The combustion duration exhibited a consistent and substantial reduction across all of the examined operating points when compared to pure gasoline operation. Furthermore, the cycle-to-cycle variation difference remained statistically insignificant, indicating that the introduction of 20% hydrogen did not adversely affect combustion stability. In addition to improving model accuracy, this work investigates the occurrence of abnormal combustion phenomena—including backfiring, auto-ignition, and knock—under enriched conditions. The results confirm that 20% hydrogen blends can be safely utilized in standard engine architectures, yielding faster combustion and reduced burn durations. The validated model offers a reliable foundation for further dual-fuel optimization and supports the broader integration of hydrogen into conventional internal combustion platforms. Full article

This study investigates the impact of circumferential angle (φ) and interaction angle (θ) between hydrogen jets and diesel sprays in a co-axial hydrogen–diesel injector on combustion and emissions in a hydrogen–diesel dual-fuel engine using 3D CFD simulations. The results demonstrate that a co-axial dual-layer nozzle design significantly enhances combustion performance by leveraging hydrogen jet kinetic energy to accelerate fuel–air mixing. Specifically, a co-axial alignment (φ = 0°) between hydrogen and diesel sprays achieves optimal combustion characteristics, including the highest in-cylinder pressure (20.92 MPa), the earliest ignition timing (−0.3° CA ATDC), and the maximum indicated power of the high-pressure cycle (47.26 kW). However, this configuration also results in elevated emissions, with 29.6% higher NOx and 34.5% higher soot levels compared to a φ = 15° arrangement. To balance efficiency and emissions, an interaction angle of θ = 7.5° proves most effective, further improving combustion efficiency and increasing indicated power to 47.69 kW while reducing residual fuel mass. For applications prioritizing power output, the φ = 0° and θ = 7.5° configuration is recommended, whereas a φ = 15° alignment with a moderate θ (5–7.5°) offers a viable compromise, maintaining over 90% of peak power while substantially lowering NOx and soot emissions. This study investigates the impact of hydrogen supplementation on the performance, efficiency, and emissions of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine, with a specific focus on knock phenomena. A Nissan HR16DE engine was modified to operate in a dual-fuel mode using gasoline (E95) and high-purity hydrogen. Hydrogen was injected via secondary manifold injectors and managed through a reprogrammable MoTeC ECU, allowing precise control of ignition timing and fuel delivery. Experiments were conducted across various engine speeds and loads, with hydrogen mass fractions ranging from 0% to 30%. Results showed that increasing hydrogen content enhanced combustion intensity, thermal efficiency, and stability. Brake specific fuel consumption decreased by up to 43.4%, while brake thermal efficiency improved by 2–3%. CO, HC, and CO2 emissions were significantly reduced. However, NOx emissions increased with higher hydrogen concentrations due to elevated combustion temperatures. Knock tendency was effectively mitigated by retarding ignition timing, ensuring peak in-cylinder pressure occurred at 14–15° CAD aTDC. These findings demonstrate the potential of hydrogen supplementation to reduce fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions in spark ignition engines, while highlighting the importance of precise combustion control to address challenges such as knock and NOx formation. Challenges associated with the homogeneous charge combustion ignition (HCCI) concept include combustion phasing control and a narrow operating window. To address the HCCI engine developmental needs, chemical kinetic solvers have been recently included in the commercial engine simulation toolchains like GT-Suite v2024 upward. This study investigates the feasibility of ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen (H2) as dual fuels in homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines, leveraging chemical kinetics modeling via GT-Suite software v2024. A validated baseline model was adapted with NH3/H2 injectors and simulated across varying blending ratios (BR), compression ratios (CR), air–fuel equivalence ratios (ER), and engine speeds. Results reveal that adding 10% H2 to NH3 significantly improves ignition. Optimal performance was observed at a CR of 20 and a lean mixture, achieving higher indicated thermal efficiency (about 40%), while keeping the intrinsic advantages of zero-carbon fuel. However, NOx emissions increased with higher ER due to elevated combustion temperatures. The study emphasizes the trade-offs between efficiency and NOx emissions under tested conditions. Finally, despite the single-zone model limitations in neglecting thermal stratification, this study shows that kinetic modeling has great potential for effectively predicting trends in HCCI, thereby demonstrating the promise of NH3/H2 blends in HCCI engines for cleaner and efficient combustion, paving the way for advanced dual-fuel combustion concepts. Nitrogen oxides (NOx), harmful pollutants primarily from fossil fuel combustion, pose significant environmental and health risks. Among mitigation technologies, NH3-SCR is widely adopted due to its high efficiency and industrial viability. MnO2-based catalysts, particularly α-MnO2, have gained attention for low-temperature NH3-SCR owing to their redox properties, low-temperature activity, and environmental compatibility. In this study, α-MnO2 catalysts with tunable oxygen vacancy concentrations were synthesized by varying calcination atmospheres. Compared to α-MnO2-Air, the oxygen vacancy-rich α-MnO2-N2 exhibited stronger acidity, enhanced redox properties, and superior NH3/NO adsorption and activation, achieving 98% NO conversion at 125–250 °C. Oxygen vacancies promoted NH3 adsorption on Lewis/Brønsted acid sites, facilitating -NH2 intermediate formation, while enhancing NO oxidation to reactive nitrates. In situ DRIFTS revealed a dual E-R and L-H reaction pathway, with oxygen vacancies crucial for NO activation, intermediate formation, and N2 generation. These findings underscore the importance of oxygen vacancy engineering in optimizing Mn-based SCR catalysts. Full article

Impact of Ammonia Energy Ratio on the Performance of an Ammonia/Diesel Dual-Fuel Direct Injection Engine Across Different Combustion Modes

The ammonia energy ratio (AER) is a critical parameter influencing the performance of ammonia/diesel dual-fuel engines. In this study, a numerical simulation was conducted based on a high-pressure dual-fuel (HPDF) direct injection ammonia/diesel engine to investigate the impact of the AER on combustion and emissions under two distinct combustion modes. By adjusting the ammonia start of injection timing (ASOI), the combustion mode was transitioned from diffusion combustion (HPDF1) to partially premixed combustion (HPDF2). The results show that under the HPDF1 mode, a three-stage heat release pattern is observed, and the evolution curves of NO and NO2 exhibit fluctuations similar to the heat release process. As the AER increases, the second heat release stage is suppressed, the high-temperature region narrows, the ignition delay is extended, and the CA10–CA50 interval shortens, leading to a higher maximum pressure rise rate (MPRR) at a high AER. Conversely, in the HPDF2 mode, the combustion process is characterized by a two-stage heat release. With an increasing AER, the high-temperature region expands, the ignition delay and CA10–CA50 interval are prolonged, while the CA50–CA90 interval shortens, and the MPRR becomes the lowest at a high AER. For both combustion modes, total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions decrease with an increasing AER. However, in the HPDF2 mode with an AER = 95%, N2O accounts for up to 78% of the total GHG emissions. Additionally, a trade-off relationship exists between NOx emissions and indicated thermal efficiency (ITE). When the ASOI is set to −8°CA ATDC, the engine operates in a transitional combustion mode between HPDF1 and HPDF2. At this point, setting the AER to 95% effectively mitigates the trade-off, achieving an ITE of 53.56% with NOx emissions as low as 578 ppm. Full article
