Research on Startup Characteristics of Parallel Axial-Flow Pump Systems

This study takes four parallel axial-flow pumps (three in operation + one on standby) as the research object. Using a 1D–3D coupling method, it explores the flow characteristics of axial-flow pumps under different startup strategies during multi-pump parallel operation. Through comparative analysis, the following conclusions are drawn: when all three pumps start simultaneously, the internal pressure exceeds the rated head by 23.43%, and the reverse flow reaches 10.57% of the rated flow. When starting the pumps sequentially with 5 s intervals, the pressure can be reduced to 11.41% above the rated head, but the reverse flow increases to 13.87%. Further extending the startup interval to 15 s results in only minimal improvements compared to 5 s intervals: the maximum internal pressure and maximum reverse flow decrease by just 0.97% and 0.05%, respectively. When valve coordination is added to the 5 s sequential startup strategy (pre-opening the valve to 60% before pump startup), the pressure exceeds the rated head by 10.49%, and the reverse flow exceeds the rated flow by 6.04%. In this scenario, the high-pressure areas and high-turbulence zones on the blade back surfaces are significantly reduced, achieving optimal flow stability. Therefore, the parallel system startup should adopt a coordinated strategy combining moderate time intervals with 60% valve pre-opening. This approach can both avoid excessive pressure impact and effectively control reverse flow phenomena, providing an important basis for optimizing the startup of multi-pump parallel systems. In order to study the problem of obvious wall thinning in the wellbore caused by proppant backflow and sand production under throttling conditions in tight gas wells. Based on the gas-phase control equation, particle motion equation, and erosion model, the wellbore erosion model is established. The distribution law of pressure, temperature, and velocity trace fields under throttling conditions is analyzed, and the influences of different throttling pressures, particle diameters, and particle mass flows on wellbore erosion are analyzed. The flow field at the nozzle changes drastically, and there is an obvious pressure drop, temperature drop, and velocity rise. When the surrounding gas is completely mixed, the physical quantity gradually stabilizes. The erosion shape of the wellbore outlet wall has a point-like distribution. The closer to the throttle valve outlet, the more intense the erosion point distribution is. Increasing the inlet pressure and particle mass flow rate will increase the maximum erosion rate, and increasing the particle diameter will reduce the maximum erosion rate. The particle mass flow rate has the greatest impact on the maximum erosion rate, followed by the particle diameter. The erosion trend was predicted using multiple regression model fitting of the linear interaction term. The research results can provide a reference for the application of downhole throttling technology and wellbore integrity in tight gas exploitation. Full article

Four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI has shown promise for the assessment of aortic hemodynamics. However, data analysis traditionally requires manual and time-consuming human input at several stages. This limits reproducibility and affects analysis workflows, such that large-cohort 4D flow studies are lacking. Here, a fully automated artificial intelligence (AI) 4D flow analysis pipeline was developed and evaluated in a cohort of over 350 subjects. The 4D flow MRI analysis pipeline integrated a series of previously developed and validated deep learning networks, which replaced traditionally manual processing tasks (background-phase correction, noise masking, velocity anti-aliasing, aorta 3D segmentation). Hemodynamic parameters (global aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), peak velocity, flow energetics) were automatically quantified. The pipeline was evaluated in a heterogeneous single-center cohort of 379 subjects (age = 43.5 ± 18.6 years, 118 female) who underwent 4D flow MRI of the thoracic aorta (n = 147 healthy controls, n = 147 patients with a bicuspid aortic valve [BAV], n = 10 with mechanical valve prostheses, n = 75 pediatric patients with hereditary aortic disease). Pipeline performance with BAV and control data was evaluated by comparing to manual analysis performed by two human observers. A fully automated 4D flow pipeline analysis was successfully performed in 365 of 379 patients (96%). Pipeline-based quantification of aortic hemodynamics was closely correlated with manual analysis results (peak velocity: r = 1.00, p < 0.001; PWV: r = 0.99, p < 0.001; flow energetics: r = 0.99, p < 0.001; overall r ≥ 0.99, p < 0.001). Bland–Altman analysis showed close agreement for all hemodynamic parameters (bias 1–3%, limits of agreement 6–22%). Notably, limits of agreement between different human observers’ quantifications were moderate (4–20%). In addition, the pipeline 4D flow analysis closely reproduced hemodynamic differences between age-matched adult BAV patients and controls (median peak velocity: 1.74 m/s [automated] or 1.76 m/s [manual] BAV vs. 1.31 [auto.] vs. 1.29 [manu.] controls, p < 0.005; PWV: 6.4–6.6 m/s all groups, any processing [no significant differences]; kinetic energy: 4.9 μJ [auto.] or 5.0 μJ [manu.] BAV vs. 3.1 μJ [both] control, p < 0.005). This study presents a framework for the complete automation of quantitative 4D flow MRI data processing with a failure rate of less than 5%, offering improved measurement reliability in quantitative 4D flow MRI. Future studies are warranted to reduced failure rates and evaluate pipeline performance across multiple centers. Full article

Ultra-high-temperature and pressure downhole environments pose challenges for conventional electronic instruments to adapt to high-temperature formations, thereby restricting the application of downhole electronic tool technology in deep and ultra-deep wells. Given the aforementioned limitation of electronic inclination measurement systems, specifically their poor temperature resistance, this study proposes a novel shunt flow control method. This method employs a mechanical structure to overcome temperature constraints: gravitational torque generated by the mechanical structure is utilized to control valve opening and regulate flow rate. By converting sensed well inclination information into changes in flow rate, this approach enables the transformation of well inclination sensing and its associated signals. In this study, a kinetic analysis model of the shunt-regulating valve spool was established. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, the flow characteristics of the regulating spool were analyzed under varying valve openings. The structure of the flow control valve was optimized with the goal of maximizing internal flow. Finally, the reliability of the designed structure for well deviation sensing and flow control was verified using simulation experimental studies and theoretical analyses. Full article

Control valves in nuclear systems operate under high-pressure differentials generating intense transient fluid forces that induce destructive structural vibrations, risking resonance and the valve stem fracture. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was employed to characterize the internal flow dynamics of the valve, supported by experiment validation of the fluid model. To account for nonlinear structural effects such as contact and damping, a coupled fluid–structure interaction approach incorporating nonlinear perturbation analysis was applied to evaluate the dynamic response of the valve core assembly under fluid excitation. The results indicate that flow separation, re-circulation, and vortex shedding within the throttling region are primary contributors to structural vibrations. A comparative analysis of stability coefficients, modal damping ratios, and logarithmic decrements under different valve openings revealed that the valve core assembly remains relatively stable overall. However, critical stability risks were identified in the lower-order modal frequency range at 50% and 70% openings. Notably, at a 70% opening, the first-order modal frequency of the valve core assembly closely aligns with the frequency of fluid excitation, indicating a potential for critical resonance. This research provides important insights for evaluating and enhancing the vibration stability and operational safety of control valves under complex flow conditions. Full article

This study focuses on the optimization of valve assemblies in downhole rod pumping units (DRPUs), which remain the predominant artificial lift technology in oil production worldwide. The research addresses the critical issue of premature failures in DRPUs caused by leakage in valve pairs, i.e., a problem that accounts for approximately 15% of all failures, as identified in a statistical analysis of the 2022 operational data from the Uzen oilfield in Kazakhstan. The leakage is primarily attributed to the accumulation of mechanical impurities and paraffin deposits between the valve ball and seat, leading to concentrated surface wear and compromised sealing. To mitigate this issue, a novel valve assembly design was developed featuring a flow turbulizer positioned beneath the valve seat. The turbulizer generates controlled vortex motion in the fluid flow, which increases the rotational frequency of the valve ball during operation. This motion promotes more uniform wear across the contact surfaces and reduces the risk of localized degradation. The turbulizers were manufactured using additive FDM technology, and several design variants were tested in a full-scale laboratory setup simulating downhole conditions. Experimental results revealed that the most effective configuration was a spiral plate turbulizer with a 7.5 mm width, installed without axis deviation from the vertical, which achieved the highest ball rotation frequency and enhanced lapping effect between the ball and the seat. Subsequent field trials using valves with duralumin-based turbulizers demonstrated increased operational lifespans compared to standard valves, confirming the viability of the proposed solution. However, cases of abrasive wear were observed under conditions of high mechanical impurity concentration, indicating the need for more durable materials. To address this, the study recommends transitioning to 316 L stainless steel for turbulizer fabrication due to its superior tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Implementing this design improvement can significantly reduce maintenance intervals, improve pump reliability, and lower operating costs in mature oilfields with high water cut and solid content. The findings of this research contribute to the broader efforts in petroleum engineering to enhance the longevity and performance of artificial lift systems through targeted mechanical design improvements and material innovation. The two-stage proportional valve is a key control component in heavy-duty equipment, where its signal-flow characteristics critically influence operational performance. This study proposes an innovative flow characteristic regulation method using variable-gain feedback grooves. Unlike conventional throttling notch optimization, the core mechanism actively adjusts pilot–main valve mapping through feedback groove shape and area gain adjustments to achieve the desired flow curves. This approach avoids complex throttling notch issues while retaining the valve’s high dynamics and flow capacity. Mathematical modeling elucidated the underlying mechanism. Subsequently, trapezoidal and composite feedback grooves are designed and investigated via simulation. Finally, composite feedback groove spools tailored to construction machinery operating conditions are developed. Comparative experiments demonstrate the following: (1) Pilot–main mapping inversely correlates with area gain; increasing gain enhances micro-motion control, while decreasing gain boosts flow gain for rapid actuation. (2) This method does not significantly increase pressure loss or energy consumption (measured loss: 0.88 MPa). (3) The composite groove provides segmented characteristics; its micro-motion flow gain (2.04 L/min/0.1 V) is 61.9% lower than conventional valves, significantly improving fine control. (4) Adjusting groove area gain and transition point flexibly modifies flow gain and micro-motion zone length. This method offers a new approach for high-performance valve flow regulation. Rail transit as a high-energy consumption field urgently requires the adoption of clean energy innovations to reduce energy consumption and accelerate the transition to new energy applications. As an energy-saving fluid machinery, the ejector exhibits significant application potential and academic value within this field. This paper reviewed the recent advances, technical challenges, research hotspots, and future development directions of ejector applications in rail transit, aiming to address gaps in existing reviews. (1) In waste heat recovery, exhaust heat is utilized for propulsion in vehicle ejector refrigeration air conditioning systems, resulting in energy consumption being reduced by 12~17%. (2) In vehicle pneumatic pressure reduction systems, the throttle valve is replaced with an ejector, leading to an output power increase of more than 13% and providing support for zero-emission new energy vehicle applications. (3) In hydrogen supply systems, hydrogen recirculation efficiency exceeding 68.5% is achieved in fuel cells using multi-nozzle ejector technology. (4) Ejector-based active flow control enables precise ± 20 N dynamic pantograph lift adjustment at 300 km/h. However, current research still faces challenges including the tendency toward subcritical mode in fixed geometry ejectors under variable operating conditions, scarcity of application data for global warming potential refrigerants, insufficient stability of hydrogen recycling under wide power output ranges, and thermodynamic irreversibility causing turbulence loss. To address these issues, future efforts should focus on developing dynamic intelligent control technology based on machine learning, designing adjustable nozzles and other structural innovations, optimizing multi-system efficiency through hybrid architectures, and investigating global warming potential refrigerants. These strategies will facilitate the evolution of ejector technology toward greater intelligence and efficiency, thereby supporting the green transformation and energy conservation objectives of rail transit. In this paper, the effective bulk modulus of pump-controlled hydraulic cylinders is studied in the context of linear time-invariant modeling and control. Using an experimental test-rig, the minimum expected value of the effective bulk modulus is identified, and its impact on stability and achievable performance under feedback control is analyzed. A method for control design and analysis based on a single operating point, analogous to that of what is traditionally utilized in valve-controlled systems, is proposed and validated. It is shown that despite the drastic reduction in the minimum effective bulk modulus occurring in these systems compared to that of valve-controlled cylinders, adequate performance may be achieved under feedback control due to the presence of adequate damping. Two critical modeling aspects commonly neglected in the research literature on these systems are highlighted, and their importance is demonstrated. These results demonstrate the efficacy of linear time-invariant methods in pump-controlled cylinders, as well as the importance of making appropriate modeling decisions, and should therefore be of high relevance to both researchers and engineers working with pump-controlled cylinders. With the frequent occurrence of global floods, the demand for emergency rescue equipment has grown rapidly. The development and technological innovation of digital hydraulic drive systems (DHDSs) for emergency drainage pumps (EDPs) have become key to improving rescue efficiency. However, EDPs are prone to being affected by random and uncertain loads during operation. To achieve intelligent and efficient rescue operations, a DHDS suitable for EDPs was proposed. Firstly, the configuration and operation mode of the DHDS for EDPs were analyzed. Based on this, a multi-field coupling dynamic simulation platform for the DHDS was constructed. Secondly, the output characteristics of the system under alternating loads were simulated and analyzed. Finally, a test platform for the EDP DHDS was established, and the dynamic characteristics of the system under alternating loads were explored. The results show that as the load torque of the alternating loads increases, the amplitude of the pressure of the motor also increases, the output flow of the hydraulic-controlled proportional reversing valve (HCPRV) changes slightly, and the fluctuation range of the rotational speed of the motor increases. The fluctuation range of the pressure and the rotational speed of the motor are basically not affected by the frequency of alternating loads, but the fluctuation amplitude of the output flow of the HCPRV reduces with the increase in the frequency of alternating loads. This system can respond to changes in load relatively quickly under alternating loads and can return to a stable state in a short time. It has laudable anti-interference ability and output stability. Hydrogels have emerged as multifunctional biomaterials in cardiac surgery, offering promising solutions for myocardial regeneration, adhesion prevention, valve engineering, and localized drug and gene delivery. Their high water content, biocompatibility, and mechanical tunability enable close emulation of the cardiac extracellular matrix, supporting cellular viability and integration under dynamic physiological conditions. In myocardial repair, injectable and patch-forming hydrogels have been shown to be effective in reducing infarct size, promoting angiogenesis, and preserving contractile function. Hydrogel coatings and films have been designed as adhesion barriers to minimize pericardial adhesions after cardiotomy and improve reoperative safety. In heart valve and patch engineering, hydrogels contribute to scaffold design by providing bio-instructive, mechanically resilient, and printable matrices that are compatible with 3D fabrication. Furthermore, hydrogels serve as localized delivery platforms for small molecules, proteins, and nucleic acids, enabling sustained or stimuli-responsive release while minimizing systemic toxicity. Despite these advances, challenges such as mechanical durability, immune compatibility, and translational scalability persist. Ongoing innovations in smart polymer chemistry, hybrid composite design, and patient-specific manufacturing are addressing these limitations. This review aims to provide an integrated perspective on the application of hydrogels in cardiac surgery. The relevant literature was identified through a narrative search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Google Scholar. Taken together, hydrogels offer a uniquely versatile and clinically translatable platform for addressing the multifaceted challenges of cardiac surgery. Hydrogels are poised to redefine clinical strategies in cardiac surgery by enabling tailored, bioresponsive, and functionally integrated therapies. Full article

To improve the prediction accuracy of soot load in gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) and the control accuracy during GPF regeneration, this study developed a prediction model to predict the soot mass concentration at the GPF inlet of gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines using advanced machine learning methods. Three machine learning approaches, namely, support vector regression (SVR), deep neural network (DNN), and a Stacking integration model of SVR and DNN, were employed, respectively, to predict the soot mass concentration at the GPF inlet. The input data includes engine speed, torque, ignition timing, throttle valve opening angle, fuel injection pressure, and pulse width. Exhaust gas soot mass concentration at the three-way catalyst (TWC) outlet is obtained by an engine bench test. The results show that the correlation coefficients (R2) of SVR, DNN, and Stacking integration model of SVR and DNN are 0.937, 0.984, and 0.992, respectively, and the prediction ranges of soot mass concentration are 0–0.038 mg/s, 0–0.030 mg/s, and 0–0.07 mg/s, respectively. The distribution, median, and data density of prediction results obtained by the three machine learning approaches fit well with the test results. However, the prediction result of the SVR model is poor when the soot mass concentration exceeds 0.038 mg/s. The median of the prediction result obtained by the DNN model is closer to the test result, specifically for data points in the 25–75% range. However, there are a few negative prediction results in the test dataset due to overfitting. Integrating SVR and DNN models through stacked models extends the predictive range of a single SVR or DNN model while mitigating the overfitting of DNN models. The results of the study can serve as a reference for the development of accurate prediction algorithms to estimate soot loads in GPFs, which in turn can provide some basis for the control of the particulate mass and particle number (PN) emitted from GDI engines. Internal leakage within the valve body constitutes a severe potential safety hazard in industrial fluid control systems, attributable to its high concealment and the resultant difficulty in detection via conventional methodologies. Acoustic emission (AE) technology, functioning as an efficient non-destructive testing approach, is capable of capturing the transient stress waves induced by leakage, thereby furnishing an effective means for the real-time monitoring and quantitative assessment of internal leakage within the valve body. This paper conducts a systematic review of the theoretical foundations, signal-processing methodologies, and the latest research advancements related to the technology for detecting internal leakage in the valve body based on acoustic emission. Firstly, grounded in Lechlier’s acoustic analogy theory, the generation mechanism of acoustic emission signals arising from valve body leakage is elucidated. Secondly, a detailed analysis is conducted on diverse signal processing techniques and their corresponding optimization strategies, encompassing parameter analysis, time–frequency analysis, nonlinear dynamics methods, and intelligent algorithms. Moreover, this paper recapitulates the current challenges encountered by this technology and delineates future research orientations, such as the fusion of multi-modal sensors, the deployment of lightweight deep learning models, and integration with the Internet of Things. This study provides a systematic reference for the engineering application and theoretical development of the acoustic emission-based technology for detecting internal leakage in valves. Full article

Smaller Bioprosthetic Valves May Be Associated with Worse Clinical Outcomes and Reduced Freedom from Reoperation in sAVR

Background: Surgical bioprosthetic aortic valve replacement is a ubiquitous procedure, with several factors identified in affecting outcomes. We hypothesize that smaller valves may be associated with worse outcomes and decreased freedom from clinical events, and a shift in implanting larger valves whenever possible may confer benefit to the patient. Methods: A narrative review of the literature was conducted using a systematic search strategy to evaluate studies examining the relationship between bioprosthetic valve size and outcomes. Inclusion criteria focused on studies reporting paired data on valve size and clinical endpoints in surgical AVR. Results: Among the 15 reviewed studies, smaller valve sizes were consistently associated with higher post-operative transvalvular gradients (6/7 studies) and increased reintervention rates (5/8 studies). Associations with accelerated structural valve degeneration (SVD) (3/5 studies) and reduced survival (8/11 studies) were also observed, although heterogeneity in study design and follow-up durations limited definitive conclusions. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that larger valve sizes may improve freedom from SVD, reduce reintervention rates, and enhanced survival. This may also justify the slight increased risk of enlarging the aortic root to accommodate a larger bioprosthetic valve prosthesis. Further high-quality, controlled studies are needed to clarify the independent impact of valve size on long-term outcomes and guide surgical decision-making. Full article

In such areas, effective water management is crucial due to the terrain’s complexity and variability, which can greatly affect water distribution and resource efficiency. This text analyzes various types of pressure-regulating devices, including direct-acting and pilot-operated regulators, delving into their working principles, performance characteristics, and practical advantages and disadvantages. This summary also addresses the current research trends in these technologies, focusing on design optimization and performance enhancements. By summarizing existing studies and highlighting areas for future research, this review aims to provide a solid foundation for technological advancements in agricultural irrigation systems suited to challenging landscapes.
