In recent years, numerous studies have emerged on the biological activities of endemic berries from the Valdivian Forest and their potential for therapeutic use. However, some species appear to have been relatively neglected. The objective of this study was to conduct, for the first time, a phytochemical composition analysis of a hydroalcoholic extract of Luzuriaga radicans Ruiz & Pav. and to evaluate its potential as an antioxidant and as an enzyme inhibitor in relation to chronic non-communicable diseases. The berries were collected in the Saval Park in Valdivia and were subsequently extracted via sonication in ethanol/water. UHPLC-DAD, HPLC-APCI (+)-MS, and UHPLC-ESI (+)-TOF-MS analysis allowed for the identification of several carotenoid ester species. According to UHPLC-DAD, the sum of carotenoids yielded was 983.4 ± 26.3 mg/kg DW, while the concentration of the phenolic compounds was 9.33 ± 0.01 mg GAE/g dry fruit. The extract exhibited antioxidant properties by scavenging DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothioazolin-6-sulfonic acid)) radicals, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It also demonstrated cholinesterase enzyme inhibitor capacities (AChE and BuChE—IC50: 6.904 ± 0.42 and 18.38 ± 0.48 µg/mL, respectively). Docking calculations were additionally performed for a selection of compounds in the berries. The data obtained suggest that the hydroalcoholic extract of L. radicans possesses significant potential as a natural antioxidant and for the inhibition of enzymes, making it a promising candidate for the development of phytotherapeutic and nutraceutical products, especially as a supplement against chronic diseases. Association Between 24-Hour Movement Behaviors and Noncommunicable Chronic Diseases Among Adult and Older Adult Users of the Brazilian Community Health Promotion Program

Background/Objectives: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading causes of global mortality among adults. The aim of this study was to examine the association between adherence to 24 h movement behavior guidelines and the diagnosis of NCDs. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with users of the Health Academy Program in Brazil. The sample consisted of 1212 individuals (92.9% female), aged 18 years or older. Dependent variables included self-reported hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and cardiovascular disease based on previous medical diagnosis. Independent variables (physical activity, screen time, and sleep) were self-reported. Binary and multinomial logistic regressions were performed and adjusted for sex, age, educational level, body mass index, and marital status. Results: Participants who did not meet any of the 24 h movement behavior recommendations had higher odds of hypertension (OR: 1.35; 95% CI: 1.15–1.77), diabetes (OR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.03–2.01), and having two (OR: 1.29; 95% CI: 1.09–2.91) or three or more NCDs (OR: 1.40; 95% CI: 1.11–2.13). Not meeting the physical activity recommendation was associated with higher odds of hypercholesterolemia (OR: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.06–1.76). In contrast, meeting the physical activity guideline alone (OR: 0.32; 95% CI: 0.11–0.85) or in combination with adequate sleep (OR: 0.32; 95% CI: 0.11–0.90) was associated with lower odds of cardiovascular disease. All of these results remained significant after adjustments for multiple comparisons. Conclusions: Not meeting any of the 24 h movement behavior guidelines, especially those related to physical activity, was associated with a higher occurrence of NCDs. Full article

Since 2000, antioxidant research in Chile has shown steady growth, from the chemical sciences to their application in biomedical sciences, functional foods, reproduction, and environmental studies. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of Chilean scientific output in the field of antioxidants from 2000 to 2024, organized into five-year intervals. A total of 3190 research articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) database were analyzed. Bibliometric indicators—including Price’s, Bradford’s, and Zipf’s laws—were applied to assess literature growth, authorship concentration, journal dispersion, and keyword evolution. Key findings include (i) high productivity from institutions such as the Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Universidad de Santiago de Chile, and Universidad de Concepción; (ii) the identification of leading authors such as Dr. Antonio Vega-Gálvez, Dr. Guillermo Schmeda-Hirschman, and Dr. Mario J. Simirgiotis; and (iii) the consolidation of three main research areas: biomedical applications (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative diseases), food science and technology (e.g., antioxidant properties, and agro-industrial waste revalorization), and ethnopharmacology (e.g., native plant use). This study made it possible to map the state of the art of antioxidant research in Chile and identify key players and research lines, consolidating a comprehensive vision of scientific development in this field. Spatiotemporal Patterns of Non-Communicable Disease Mortality in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico, 2000–2019

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a leading cause of mortality globally, contributing significantly to the burden on healthcare systems. Understanding the spatiotemporal patterns of NCD mortality is crucial for identifying vulnerable populations and regions at high risk. Objectives: Here, we evaluated the spatiotemporal patterns of NCD mortality in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico (MAVM) from 2000 to 2019 for five International Classification of Diseases chapters (4, 5, 6, 9, and 10) at two spatial scales: the municipal level and metropolitan region. Methods: Mortality rates were calculated for the total population and stratified by sex and age groups at both spatial scales. In addition, the relative risk (RR) of mortality was estimated to identify vulnerable population groups and regions with a high risk of mortality, using women and the 25–34 age group as reference categories for population-level analysis, and the overall MAVM mortality rate as the reference for municipal-level analysis. Results: Mortality trends showed that circulatory-system diseases (Chapter 9) are emerging as a concerning health issue, with 45 municipalities showing increasing mortality trends, especially among older adults. Respiratory-system diseases (Chapter 10), mental and behavioral disorders (Chapter 5) and nervous-system diseases (Chapter 6) predominantly did not exhibit a consistent general mortality trend. However, upon disaggregating by sex and age groups, specific negative or positive trends emerged at the municipal level for some of these chapters or subgroups. Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (Chapter 4) showed a complex pattern, with some age groups presenting increasing mortality trends, and 52 municipalities showing increasing trends overall. The RR showed men and older age groups (≥35 years) exhibiting higher mortality risks. The temporal trend of RR allowed us to identify spatial mortality hotspots mainly in chapters related to circulatory, endocrine, and respiratory diseases, forming four geographical clusters in Mexico City that show persistent high risk of mortality. Conclusions: The spatiotemporal analysis highlights municipalities and vulnerable populations with a consistently elevated mortality risk. These findings emphasize the need for monitoring NCD mortality patterns at both the municipal and metropolitan levels to address disparities and guide the implementation of health policies aimed at reducing mortality risk in vulnerable populations. Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD) is a chronic, non-communicable spectrum of diseases characterized by lipid accumulation. It is often asymptomatic, and its prevalence varies by region, age, gender, and economic status. It is estimated that 25% of the world’s population currently suffer from MAFLD, and 20 million patients will die from MAFLD-related diseases. In the last 20 years, tea and anti-obesity research have indicated that regularly consuming tea decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome (MeS). In this review, we aimed to present studies concerning the influence of matcha extracts and epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG) supplements on metabolic functions in the context of MAFLD in human and animal studies. The published data show promise. In both human and animal studies, the beneficial effects on body weight, cholesterol levels, and liver metabolism and function were noted, even in short-period experiments. The safety levels for EGCG and green tea extract consumption are marked. More experiments are needed to confirm the results observed in animal studies and to show the mechanisms by which green tea exerts its effects. The preliminary data from research concerning microbiota or epigenetic changes observed after polyphenols and green tea consumption need to be expanded. To improve the efficiency and availability of green tea or supplement consumption as a treatment for MAFLD patients, more research with larger groups and longer study durations is needed. In rapidly urbanizing environments, environmental stressors—such as air pollution, noise, heat, and green space depletion—substantially exacerbate public health burdens, contributing to the global rise of non-communicable diseases, particularly hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, and mental health conditions. Despite expanding research on green spaces and health (+76.9%, 2019–2025) and optimization and algorithmic approaches (+63.7%), the compounded and synergistic impacts of these stressors remain inadequately explored or addressed within current urban planning frameworks. This study presents a Mixed Methods Systematic Review (MMSR) to investigate the potential of AI-driven urban design optimizations in mitigating these multi-scalar environmental health risks. Specifically, it explores the complex interactions between urbanization, traffic-related pollutants, green infrastructure, and architectural intelligence, identifying critical gaps in the integration of computational optimization with nature-based solutions (NBS). To empirically substantiate these theoretical insights, this study draws on longitudinal 24 h dynamic blood pressure (BP) monitoring (3–9 months), revealing that chronic exposure to environmental noise (mean 79.84 dB) increases cardiovascular risk by approximately 1.8-fold. BP data (average 132/76 mmHg), along with observed hypertensive spikes (systolic > 172 mmHg, diastolic ≤ 101 mmHg), underscore the inadequacy of current urban design strategies in mitigating health risks. Based on these findings, this paper advocates for the integration of AI-driven approaches to optimize urban environments, offering actionable recommendations for developing adaptive, human-centric, and health-responsive urban planning frameworks that enhance resilience and public health in the face of accelerating urbanization. Background: In a global panorama marked by a progressive rise in obesity, metabolic syndrome, and chronic non-communicable disease prevalence, nutrition education (NE) might play a pivotal role in restoring adoption and strengthening adherence to dietary patterns that protect human health. Therefore, the primary purpose of this work is to review the existing scientific literature studying NE programs aimed at schoolchildren in the decade 2014–2024 and evaluate the effectiveness of intervention tools. Methods: During the first phase of this research, a qualitative analysis was conducted to track similarity in intervention tools and strategies used in nutrition education programs. In the second phase, a quantitative analysis was carried out, extracting common parameters among studies and assessing their potential influence in improving adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD). Results: A high degree of heterogeneity was observed in educational program designs and intervention tools, which were usually not properly described and justified. All studies that measured adherence to the MD registered an improvement after the intervention, in some cases even higher than 10%. However, this study found no relationship between common parameters (i.e., number of formal tools, number of non-formal tools, lesson duration, and program length) used in NE and the improvement in students’ adherence to MD. Conclusions: This research has contributed to outlining a general framework of NE and to promoting a systematic approach in this research field. Full article

Children living with chronic diseases represent a great challenge for the health care system, their families, and communities. These young patients face continuous medical needs that affect not only their health but also their daily routines, emotional well-being, and family dynamics. In response, clinical practice is increasingly integrating psychosocial indicators alongside traditional medical parameters. Consequently, there is a growing consensus that the evaluation of pediatric chronic diseases should address not only clinical dimensions but also the disease’s impact on socialization, emotional health, and daily functioning. This narrative review explores the role of psychosocial variables in the management of pediatric chronic illnesses, including the experiences of parents and siblings, with a focus on effective strategies to improve everyday life. The integration of quality of life and well-being within a multidimensional care model could be instrumental in both symptom management and psychosocial support. Recognizing that children with chronic conditions are at increased risk for long-term adverse outcomes, it is critical to develop interventions that go beyond clinical care, encompassing education, coping reinforcement, and family-centered approaches. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) represents a public health problem globally, with the highest prevalence reported among older adults. While an interplay of various determinants including genetic, epigenetic, environmental factors and unhealthy lifestyle, particularly diet, has been established to contribute to T2D development, emerging evidence supports the role of interactions between nutrients or dietary patterns and genes in the pathogenesis of this metabolic disorder. The amount, and especially the type of carbohydrates, in particular, have been correlated with the risk of non-communicable chronic disease and mortality. This narrative review aims to discuss the updated data on the complex and not fully elucidated relationship between carbohydrate–gene interactions and incidence of T2D, identifying the most susceptible genes able to modulate the dual association between carbohydrate intake and risk of developing T2D. The identification of genetic polymorphisms in response to this macronutrient represents a potentially powerful target to estimate individual risk and prevent the development of T2D in the context of personalized medicine. The postulation around novel foods potentially tailored to minimize the risks of developing T2D will pave the way for a new era into food research in relation to the safeguarding of well-being status in patients affected by, or at risk for, T2D. Maternal obesity programs the fetus for increased risk of chronic disease development in early life and adulthood. We hypothesized that maternal nutrient excess leads to fetal inflammation and impairs offspring skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis in non-human primates. At least 12 months before pregnancy, female baboons were fed a normal chow (CTR, 12% energy fat) or a maternal nutrient excess (MNE, 45% energy fat, and ad libitum fructose sodas) diet, with the latter to induce obesity. After 165 days of gestation (0.9 G), offspring baboons were delivered by cesarean section, and the soleus muscle was collected (CTR n = 16, MNE n = 5). At conception, MNE mothers presented increased body fat and weighed more than controls. The soleus muscle of MNE fetuses exhibited increased levels of stress signaling associated with inflammation (TLR4, TNFα, NF-kB p65, and p38), concomitant with reduced expression of key regulators of mitochondrial biogenesis, including PGC1α, both at the protein and transcript levels, as well as downregulation of PPARGC1B, PPARA, PPARB, CREB1, NOS3, SIRT1, SIRT3. Decreased transcript levels of NRF1 were observed alongside diminished mitochondrial DNA copy number, mitochondrial fusion elements (MFN1, MFN2), cytochrome C protein levels, and cytochrome C oxidase subunits I and II transcripts (cox1 and cox2). MNE coupled to MO-induced stress signaling in fetal baboon soleus muscle is associated with impaired mitochondrial biogenesis and lower mitochondrial content, resembling the changes observed in metabolic dysfunctions, such as diabetes. The observed fetal alterations may have important implications for postnatal development and metabolism, potentially increasing the risk of early-onset metabolic disorders and other non-communicable diseases. The beneficial effect of consuming fruits and vegetables in the prevention of chronic non-communicable diseases and healthy aging is well known. This is attributed to food and vegetable antioxidant and fiber content. The aim of this publication is to communicate the results of recent research on pectin in humans, to propose an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, or their possible use as a food supplement. A comprehensive narrative review was conducted considering recent publications on pectin. The description of starch, pectin, the physicochemical changes caused by pectin, and the effect of pectin on the activity of amylase are reported. Dietary fiber and gut microbiota in human health are also described, with the production of saturated fatty acids with fewer than six carbon atoms. Finally, health effects such as anti-hyperglycemic and anti-hyperlipidemic activities, preventing and controlling obesity and heart disease, are analyzed, as well as other health effects in tumors, the gastrointestinal tract, and immunity. Considering the beneficial effects of pectin in health and the low consumption throughout the world, it is recommended to promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables to increase pectin intake in the human diet. In physiological situations involving cell damage, molecules derived from mitochondria or bacteria are produced. These molecules are known as N-formyl peptides and are detected by formyl peptide receptors (FPRs), which stimulate immune cells to migrate to the specific site of injury or infection. Despite their initially beneficial effects on health, N-formyl peptides also contribute to the development or exacerbation of chronic non-communicable diseases. Therefore, understanding the metabolic pathways related to the involvement of N-formyl peptides and FPRs may increase our ability to regulate immune responses and precisely target FPRs with personalized strategies, offering a promising approach for the treatment of specific diseases. In this way, bioactive compounds in food may influence N-formyl peptides, interacting with the receptors either competitively or by inhibiting them, which affects the inflammatory response and oxidative reactions of cells. This review examines the pathways associated with forming N-formyl peptides, the activation of FPRs, and the roles of bioactive compounds in regulating N-formyl peptides. Full article

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory conditions are the leading causes of death globally, largely driven by modifiable lifestyle factors. With growing interest in dietary strategies for NCDs prevention and management, functional foods like watercress (Nasturtium officinale) have attracted attention for their rich phytochemical content and potential health benefits. This narrative review synthesizes 88 sources published between 2019 and March 2025, exploring the effects of watercress bioactive compounds on major NCDs. Watercress is abundant in glucosinolates, isothiocyanates (especially phenethyl isothiocyanate), flavonoids, vitamins, and minerals. These compounds contribute to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic regulatory effects. Preclinical and clinical studies show that watercress supplementation may improve lipid profiles, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammation in cardiovascular and respiratory conditions. It also appears to enhance insulin function and reduce blood glucose levels. In cancer models, watercress extracts exhibit antiproliferative, pro-apoptotic, and chemoprotective properties, with selective toxicity towards cancer cells and protective effects on normal cells. These findings highlight the therapeutic potential of watercress as a dietary adjunct in NCDs prevention and management, supporting the need for further clinical research. Full article

Association of Pre- and Gestational Conditions and Barriers to Breastfeeding with Exclusive Breastfeeding Practices

Background: Breastfeeding is essential for preventing non-communicable diseases. However, mothers with chronic illnesses tend to breastfeed less, increasing the likelihood of abandoning breastfeeding, especially if they experience gestational complications. Objective: To analyze the association between factors such as prepregnancy maternal characteristics, gestational complications, food security, barriers, and facilitators with the practice of exclusive breastfeeding. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 566 women who had prenatal care and gave birth at the National Institute of Perinatology (Mexico City) between 2021 and 2024. Surveys were administered on breastfeeding practices, food insecurity, barriers, and facilitators of exclusive breastfeeding in mothers. In addition, sociodemographic information, medical history (prepregnancy conditions and complications), gestational weight gain, and neonatal outcomes were recorded. Results: Of the 566 women, only 43.6% practiced exclusive breastfeeding, with a median duration of 4 months. Exclusive breastfeeding was more frequent in young, stay-at-home mothers with lower educational attainment and in those with food insecurity, who also tended to delay the introduction of complementary foods until after six months. Prepregnancy risk conditions (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.06–2.30) and multiparity (OR 1.64, 95% CI 1.08–2.49) increased the risk of non-exclusive breastfeeding. Conversely, food insecurity (OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.20–0.78) and counseling from healthcare personnel (OR 0.09, 95% CI 0.01–0.51) showed a protective effect. The analysis also showed that paid employment (OR 4.68, 95% CI 1.65–13.21), the perception of low milk production (OR 6.45, 95% CI 2.95–14.10), maternal illness/medication (OR 3.91, 95% CI 1.36–11.28), and fatigue (OR 4.67, 95% CI 1.36–11.28) increased the probability of non-exclusive breastfeeding. Conclusions: In Mexico, the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding faces challenges, especially in mothers who begin pregnancy with significant chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, advanced maternal age, and hypothyroidism, among others. Healthcare personnel should provide personalized advice to each woman from the prenatal stage on strategies to achieve and maintain exclusive breastfeeding. Full article

The growing global prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is drawing an increasing amount of attention to the health-promoting potential of whole-grain dietary fibers. Whole grains are rich sources of both soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF), contributing distinct physicochemical properties and playing vital roles in promoting human health. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the dietary fiber compositions of various whole grains, including wheat, oats, barley, rye, corn, sorghum, and rice, highlighting their structural characteristics, physiochemical properties, and associated health benefits. The physicochemical properties of dietary fibers, such as solubility, water- and oil-holding capacity, viscosity, swelling ability, and bile-acid-binding capacity, contribute significantly to their technological applications and potential health benefits, particularly in the prevention of NCDs. Although there is growing evidence supporting their health benefits, global whole-grain intake remains below recommended levels. Therefore, promoting whole-grain intake and developing fiber-rich functional foods are essential for enhancing public health and preventing chronic diseases. Future research should focus on enhancing the bioavailability and functionality of whole-grain dietary fibers, optimizing the methods by which they are extracted, and exploring their potential applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
