Background/Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial condition characterized by abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, hypertension, and chronic inflammation. As its global prevalence rises, there is increasing interest in natural, multi-targeted approaches to manage MetS. Curcuma longa Linn. (turmeric), especially its active compound curcumin, has shown therapeutic promise in preclinical studies. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of Curcuma longa and its derivatives on MetS-related outcomes in rodent models. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across six databases (PubMed, Scopus, AMED, LILACS, MDPI, and Google Scholar), yielding 47 eligible in vivo studies. Data were extracted on key metabolic, inflammatory, and oxidative stress markers and analyzed using random-effects models. Results were presented as mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Meta-analysis showed that curcumin significantly reduced body weight (rats: MD = −42.10; mice: MD = −2.91), blood glucose (rats: MD = −55.59; mice: MD = −28.69), triglycerides (rats: MD = −70.17; mice: MD = −24.57), total cholesterol (rats: MD = −35.77; mice: MD = −52.61), and LDL cholesterol (rats: MD = −69.34; mice: MD = −42.93). HDL cholesterol increased significantly in rats but not in mice. Inflammatory cytokines were markedly reduced, while oxidative stress improved via decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) and elevated superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) levels. Heterogeneity was moderate to high, primarily due to variations in curcumin dosage (ranging from 10 to 500 mg/kg) and treatment duration (2 to 16 weeks) across studies. Conclusions: This preclinical evidence supports Curcuma longa as a promising functional food component for preventing and managing MetS. Its multi-faceted effects warrant further clinical studies to validate its translational potential. Full article

Impact of Alginate Oligosaccharides on Ovarian Performance and the Gut Microbial Community in Mice with D-Galactose-Induced Premature Ovarian Insufficiency

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is an important factor in female infertility and is often associated with oxidative stress. Alginate oligosaccharides (AOSs), derived from the degradation of alginate, have been demonstrated to have protective effects against various oxidative stress-related diseases. However, the impact of AOSs on POI has not been previously explored. The current study explored the effects of AOSs on ovarian dysfunction in a mouse model of POI induced by D-galactose (D-gal). Female C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into five groups: the control (CON), POI model (D-gal), and low-, medium-, and high-dose AOS groups (AOS-L, 100 mg/kg/day; AOS-M, 150 mg/kg/day; AOS-H, 200 mg/kg/day). For 42 consecutive days, mice in the D-gal, AOS-L, AOS-M, and AOS-H groups received daily intraperitoneal injections of D-gal (200 mg/kg/day), whereas those in the CON group received equivalent volumes of sterile saline. Following D-gal injection, AOSs were administered via gavage at the specified doses; mice in the CON and D-gal groups received sterile saline instead. AOS treatment markedly improved estrous cycle irregularities, normalized serum hormone levels, reduced granulosa cell apoptosis, and increased follicle counts in POI mice. Moreover, AOSs significantly reduced ovarian oxidative stress and senescence in POI mice, as indicated by lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), higher activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and decreased protein expression of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), nitrotyrosine (NTY), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and p16 in ovarian tissue. Analysis of the gut microbiota through 16S rRNA gene sequencing and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) analysis revealed significant differences in gut microbiota composition and SCFA levels (acetic acid and total SCFAs) between control and D-gal-induced POI mice. These differences were largely alleviated by AOS treatment. AOSs changed the gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of Ligilactobacillus and decreasing the abundance of Clostridiales, Clostridiaceae, Marinifilaceae, and Clostridium_T. Additionally, AOSs mitigated the decline in acetic acid and total SCFA levels observed in POI mice. Notably, the total SCFA level was significantly correlated with the abundance of Ligilactobacillus, Marinifilaceae, and Clostridium_T. In conclusion, AOS intervention effectively mitigates ovarian oxidative stress, restores gut microbiota homeostasis, and regulates the microbiota–SCFA axis, collectively improving D-gal-induced POI. Therefore, AOSs represent a promising therapeutic strategy for POI management. Full article

Honey is a natural product of honeybees that has been consumed for centuries due to its nutritional value and potential health benefits. Recent scientific research has focused on its antioxidant capacity, which is linked to a variety of bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids, enzymes (e.g., glucose oxidase, catalase), flavonoids, ascorbic acid, carotenoids, amino acids, and proteins. Together, these components work synergistically to neutralize free radicals, regulate antioxidant enzyme activity, and reduce oxidative stress. This review decisively outlines the antioxidant effects of honey and presents compelling clinical and experimental evidence supporting its critical role in preventing diseases associated with oxidative stress. Honey stands out for its extensive health benefits, which include robust protection against cardiovascular issues, notable anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects, enhanced glycemic control in diabetes, immune modulation, neuroprotection, and effective wound healing. As a recognized functional food and dietary supplement, honey is essential for the prevention and adjunct treatment of chronic diseases. However, it faces challenges due to variations in composition linked to climatic conditions, geographical and floral sources, as well as hive management practices. The limited number of large-scale clinical trials further underscores the need for more research. Future studies must focus on elucidating honey’s antioxidant mechanisms, standardizing its bioactive compounds, and examining its synergistic effects with other natural antioxidants to fully harness its potential. Fresh fruit are highly perishable commodities, facing significant postharvest losses primarily due to physiological deterioration and microbial spoilage. Conventional preservation methods often face limitations regarding safety, residue, and environmental impact. Because of its rapid decomposition and low-residue-impact characteristics, ozone has proven superior as an efficient and eco-friendly solution for preserving fruit quality after harvest. The maturation and aging processes of kiwifruit are closely linked to the involvement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism. This study aimed to investigate the effects of intermittent ozone treatment (21.4 mg/m3, applied for 0, 1, 3, or 5 h weekly) on ROS metabolism, the antioxidant defense system, and storage quality of kiwifruit during cold storage (0.0 ± 0.5 °C). The results showed ozone treatment slowed the decline in titratable acid (TA) content and fruit firmness, inhibited increases in total soluble solids (TSSs) and weight loss, and maintained the storage quality. Additionally, ozone treatment enhanced the activities of antioxidant-related enzymes. This includes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). Furthermore, it delayed the reduction in ascorbate (ASA), glutathione (GSH), total phenolic compounds, and flavonoid content, while also preventing the accumulation of ROS and the rise in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. In summary, the results indicate that ozone treatment enhances the antioxidant capacity of kiwifruit by increasing the structural integrity of cell membranes, preserving the structural integrity of cell membranes, and effectively maintaining the storage quality of the fruit. Browning significantly impacts the commercial value of luffa (luffa cylindrica) and is primarily driven by the metabolic processes of phenolic acids. Investigating changes in phenolic acids during browning aids in understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying this process and provides a basis for improving storage, processing, variety breeding, and utilization of germplasm resources. This study compared browning-resistant (‘30’) and browning-sensitive (‘256’) luffa varieties using high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics techniques. The results revealed 55 genes involved in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, including 8 phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) genes, 20 peroxidase (POD) genes, 2 polyphenol oxidase (PPO) genes associated with tyrosine metabolism, and 37 peroxisome-related genes. Real-time quantitative (qPCR) was employed to validate 15 browning-related genes, revealing that the expression levels of LcPOD21 and LcPOD6 were 12.5-fold and 25-fold higher in ‘30’ compared to ‘256’, while LcPAL5 and LcPAL4 were upregulated in ‘30’. Enzyme analysis showed that catalase (CAT) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activities were higher in ‘30’ than in ‘256’. Conversely, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities were reduced in ‘30’, whereas CAT activity was upregulated. The concentrations of cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, trans-5-O-(4-coumaroyl)mangiferic acid, and caffealdehyde were lower in browning-resistant luffa ‘30’ than in browning-sensitive luffa ‘256’, suggesting that their levels influence browning in luffa. These findings elucidate the mechanisms underlying browning and inform strategies for the storage, processing, and genetic improvement of luffa. Full article

Using light-emitting diodes (LEDs), we examined how different light wavelengths influence the hypersensitive response (HR) in tobacco plants infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst). Pst-infiltrated plants exhibited greater resistance to Pst infection under green and blue light compared to white and red light, as indicated by reduced HR-associated programmed cell death, lower H2O2 production, and up to 64% reduction in membrane damage. During the late stage of HR, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase activities peaked under green and blue LEDs, with 5- and 10-fold increases, respectively, while superoxide dismutase activity was higher under white and red LEDs. Defense-related genes CHS1, PALa, PR1, and PR2 were more strongly induced by white and red light. The plants treated with green or blue LEDs during Pst infection prompted faster degradation of phototoxic Mg-porphyrins and exhibited smaller declines in Fv/Fm, electron transport rate, chlorophyll content, and LHCB expression compared to those treated with white or red LEDs. By contrast, the induction of the chlorophyll catabolic gene SGR was 54% and 77% lower in green and blue LEDs, respectively, compared to white LEDs. This study demonstrates that light quality differentially affects Pst-mediated HR, with green and blue light more effectively suppressing HR progression, mainly by reducing oxidative stress through enhanced antioxidative capacity and mitigation of photosynthetic impairments. Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl. leaves are rich in polyphenolic compounds, yet their toxicological effects in aquatic models remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the impact of a hydroethanolic E. japonica leaf extract on zebrafish embryos through the use of morphological, behavioral, and biochemical parameters. The 96 h LC50 was determined as 189.8 ± 4.5 mg/L, classifying the extract as practically non-toxic, according to OECD guidelines. Thereby, embryos were exposed for 90 h to 75 and 150 mg/L concentrations of the E. japonica leaf extract. While no significant effects were noted at the lowest concentration of 150 mg/L, significant developmental effects were observed, including reduced survival, delayed hatching, underdevelopment of the swim bladder, and retention of the yolk sac. These malformations were accompanied by marked behavioral impairments. Biochemical analysis revealed a concentration-dependent increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity, suggesting the activation of antioxidant defenses, despite no significant change in reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. This indicates a potential compensatory redox response to a pro-oxidant signal. Additionally, the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was significantly reduced at the highest concentration, which may have contributed to the observed neurobehavioral changes. While AChE inhibition is commonly associated with neurotoxicity, it is also a known therapeutic target in neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting concentration-dependent dual effects. In summary, the E. japonica leaf extract induced concentration-dependent developmental and behavioral effects in zebrafish embryos, while activating antioxidant responses without triggering oxidative damage. These findings highlight the extract’s potential bioactivity and underscore the need for further studies to explore its safety and therapeutic relevance. Full article

The premature senescence of red raspberry leaves severely affects plant growth. In this study, the double-season red raspberry cultivar ‘Polka’ was used, with N150 (0.10 g N·kg−1) selected as the treatment group (T150) and N0 (0 g N·kg−1) set as the control (CK). This study systematically investigated the mechanism of premature senescence in red raspberry leaves under different nitrogen application levels by measuring physiological parameters and conducting a combined multi-omics analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics. Results showed that T150 plants had 8.34 cm greater height and 1.45 cm greater ground diameter than CK. The chlorophyll, carotenoid, soluble protein, and sugar contents in all leaf parts of T150 were significantly higher than those in CK, whereas soluble starch contents were lower. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content and superoxide anion (O2) generation rate in the lower leaves of T150 were significantly lower than those in CK. Superoxide sismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities in the middle and lower functional leaves of T150 were higher than in CK, while catalase (CAT) activity was lower. Transcriptomic analysis identified 4350 significantly differentially expressed genes, including 2062 upregulated and 2288 downregulated genes. Metabolomic analysis identified 135 differential metabolites, out of which 60 were upregulated and 75 were downregulated. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis showed enrichment in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis (ko00940) and flavonoid biosynthesis (ko00941) pathways, with the former acting as an upstream pathway of the latter. A premature senescence pathway was established, and two key metabolites were identified: chlorogenic acid content decreased, and naringenin chalcone content increased in early senescent leaves, suggesting their pivotal roles in the early senescence of red raspberry leaves. Modulating chlorogenic acid and naringenin chalcone levels could delay premature senescence. Optimizing fertilization strategies may thus reduce senescence risk and enhance the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of the red raspberry industry. Full article

Activation of macrophages plays a key role in both inflammation and oxidative stress, key features of many chronic diseases. Pro-inflammatory M1-like macrophages, in particular, contribute to pro-oxidative environments and are a frequent focus of immunological research. This research examined the effects of kiwifruit allergen Act d 1, in comparison to LPS, on THP-1 macrophages in vitro differentiated under optimized conditions, both in the presence and in the absence of selected vanilloids. THP-1 monocyte differentiation was optimized by varying PMA exposure and resting time. Act d 1 induced M1-like phenotypic changes comparable to LPS, including upregulation of CD80, IL-1β and IL-6 secretion, gene expression of iNOS and NF-κB activation, in addition to increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and catalase activity. Treatment with specific vanilloids mitigated these responses, primarily through reduced oxidative stress and NF-κB activation. Notably, vanillin (VN) was the most effective, also reducing CD80 expression and IL-1β levels. These results suggest that vanilloids can affect pro-inflammatory signaling and oxidative stress in THP-1 macrophages and highlight their potential to alter inflammatory conditions characterized by similar immune responses. Aluminum (Al) stress is an important factor that inhibits crop growth in acidic soils and poses a threat to pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) production. In this study, we investigated the effect of endophyte (endophyte) strain J01 of blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) on the growth, development, and transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of pumpkin under aluminum stress. The results showed that the blueberry endophyte strain J01 significantly increased the root length of pumpkin under aluminum stress, promoted the growth of lateral roots, and increased root vigor; strain J01 reduced the content of MDA and the relative conductivity in the root system; strain J01 enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase in the root system but inhibited ascorbate peroxidase activity. Transcriptome analysis further revealed that strain J01 significantly regulated the expression of key genes associated with aluminum tolerance, including the upregulation of transporter protein genes (aluminum-activated malate transporter and aquaporin), affecting the gene expression levels of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase) and cell wall modification genes (xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase and pectin methylesterase). This study provides a theoretical basis and practical guidance for using microbial resources to improve aluminum tolerance in cucurbit crops. Full article

Based on the limited hepatic hydroxylation efficiency of dietary VD3 in teleosts and the superior bioavailability of its metabolite, 25(OH)D3, this study investigated the regulatory mechanisms of dietary 25(OH)D3 supplementation in yellow catfish—an economically significant species lacking prior nutritional data on this metabolite. A total of 360 fish were divided into three groups—control (basal diet), VD3 (2500 IU/kg VD3), and 25(OH)D3 (2500 IU/kg 25(OH)D3)—and fed for 8 weeks. Compared to the control, both supplemented groups showed elevated superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), catalase (CAT), and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) activities, alongside reduced malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels. The 25(OH)D3 group exhibited higher T-AOC and CAT activities and lower TNF-α than the VD3 group. Metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses identified 65 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and 3515 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Enrichment analysis indicated that the DEMs (e.g., indole compounds, organic acids, aldosterone, L-kynurenine) and DEGs (pgd, mthfr, nsdhl, nox5, prdx2, mpx, itih2, itih3, eprs1) that were highly and significantly expressed in the 25(OH)D3 group were primarily associated with antioxidant defense and inflammatory responses. Dietary 25(OH)D3 was more effective than VD3 in promoting antioxidant capacity and modulating inflammation in yellow catfish. Full article

Rhubarb, a medicinal herb in Gansu Province, China, undergoes significant quality changes during sun-drying. This study investigated color changes, drying kinetics, anthraquinone (AQ) content, metabolic profiles, and enzyme activity during the process. Results showed that drying induced enzymatic browning, with the browning index (BI) progressively increasing over extended drying periods (4–16 h) and with greater slice thickness (2–8 mm). Catalase (CAT) activity first decreased and then increased, while polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity decreased throughout drying. Slice thickness significantly affected AQ content, with the highest in 2 mm slices and the lowest in 4 mm slices. The drying process followed a logarithmic model (R2 = 0.99418, RMSE = 0.02310, and χ2 = 0.0005). Metabolomics analysis identified 631 differential metabolites, with 8 key metabolites linked to flavonoid biosynthesis, phenylalanine biosynthesis, and tyrosine metabolism. Fifteen enzymes were involved in metabolite synthesis and decomposition, though some enzyme activity trends contradicted metabolite changes. This study provides insight into rhubarb drying mechanisms and a basis for optimizing the drying process. Full article

Effect of Enterobacter bugandensis R-18 on Maize Growth Promotion Under Salt Stress

Soil salinization poses a significant constraint to agricultural productivity. However, certain plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) can mitigate salinity stress and enhance crop performance. In this study, a bacterial isolate, R-18, isolated from saline-alkali soil in Ningxia, China, was identified as Enterobacter bugandensis based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The isolate was characterized for its morphological, biochemical, and plant growth-promoting traits and was evaluated for its potential to alleviate NaCl-induced stress in maize (Zea mays L.) under hydroponic conditions. Isolate R-18 exhibited halotolerance, surviving at NaCl concentrations ranging from 2.0% to 10.0%, and alkaliphilic adaptation, growing at pH 8.0–11.0. Biochemical assays confirmed it as a Gram-negative bacterium, displaying positive reactions in the Voges–Proskauer (V–P) tests, catalase activity, citrate utilization, fluorescent pigment production, starch hydrolysis, gelatin liquefaction, and ammonia production, while testing negative for the methyl red and cellulose hydrolysis. Notably, isolate R-18 demonstrated multiple plant growth-promoting attributes, including nitrogen fixation, phosphate and potassium solubilization, ACC deaminase activity, and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) biosynthesis. Under 100 mM NaCl stress, inoculation with isolate R-18 significantly enhanced maize growth, increasing plant height, stem dry weight, root fresh weight, and root dry weight by 20.64%, 47.06%, 34.52%, and 31.25%, respectively. Furthermore, isolate R-18 improved ion homeostasis by elevating the K+/Na+ ratio in maize tissues. Physiological analyses revealed increased chlorophyll and proline content, alongside reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, indicating mitigated oxidative damage. Antioxidant enzyme activity was modulated, with decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities but increased catalase (CAT) activity. These findings demonstrated that Enterobacter bugandensis R-18 effectively alleviated NaCl-induced growth inhibition in maize by enhancing osmotic adjustment, reducing oxidative stress, and improving ion balance. Heavy metal-contaminated soil poses a severe threat to environmental quality and human health, calling for eco-friendly and efficient remediation strategies. This study explored the use of biochar-immobilized copper-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa to remediate copper-contaminated soil and promote growth of Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.). Indoor pot experiments compared four groups: copper-contaminated soil (control), soil with biochar, soil with free bacteria, and soil with biochar-immobilized bacteria (IM). Results showed IM had the most significant effects on soil properties: it raised pH to 7.04, reduced bioavailable copper by 34.37%, and increased catalase (3.48%) and urease (78.95%) activities. IM also altered soil bacterial communities, decreasing their richness and evenness (alpha diversity) while shifting community composition. For Chinese milk vetch, IM reduced leaf malondialdehyde (a marker of oxidative stress) by 15%, increased total dry weight by 90%, and lowered copper accumulation in roots (18.62%) and shoots (60.33%). As a nitrogen-fixing plant, the vetch’s nitrogen fixation in roots and shoots rose by 82.70% and 57.08%, respectively, under IM. These findings demonstrate that biochar-immobilized Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a promising in situ amendment for remediating copper-contaminated soil and boosting plant growth. Full article

Combined Impacts of Acute Heat Stress on the Histology, Antioxidant Activity, Immunity, and Intestinal Microbiota of Wild Female Burbot (Lota Lota) in Winter: New Insights into Heat Sensitivity in Extremely Hardy Fish

Temperature fluctuations caused by climate change and global warming pose a threat to fish. The burbot (lota lota) population is particularly sensitive to increased water temperature, but the systematic impacts of high-temperature exposure on their liver and intestinal health remain unclear. In January of 2025, we collected wild adult burbot individuals from the Ussuri River (water temperature: about 2 °C), China. The burbot were exposed to 2 °C, 7 °C, 12 °C, 17 °C, and 22 °C environments for 96 h; then, the liver and intestinal contents were subsequently collected for histopathology observation, immunohistochemistry, biochemical index assessment, and transcriptome/16S rDNA sequencing analysis. There was obvious liver damage including hepatocyte necrosis, fat vacuoles, and cellular peripheral nuclei. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were elevated and subsequently decreased. Additionally, the malondialdehyde (MDA) level significantly increased with increasing temperature. These results indicate that 7 °C (heat stress temperature), 12 °C (tipping point for normal physiological metabolism status), 17 °C (tipping point for individual deaths), and 22 °C (thermal limit) are critical temperatures in terms of the physiological response of burbot during their breeding period. In the hepatic transcriptome profiling, 6538 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, while KEGG enrichment analysis showed that high-temperature stress could affect normal liver function by regulating energy metabolism, immune, and apoptosis-related pathways. Microbiomics also revealed that acute heat stress could change the intestinal microbe community structure. Additionally, correlation analysis suggested potential regulatory relationships between intestinal microbe taxa and immune/apoptosis-related DEGs in the liver. This study revealed the potential impact of environmental water temperature changes in cold habitats in winter on the physiological adaptability of burbot during the breeding period and provides new insights for the ecological protection of burbot in the context of global climate change and habitat warming.
