This study focuses on producing and processing highly aligned tapes from recycled carbon fibers (rCFs). The rCFs are processed with a modified carding machine, oriented through a specialized subsequent process and consolidated into a semi-finished product. These rCF-tapes are placed onto a two-dimensional tool using an adapted automated fiber placement (AFP) technology to demonstrate a novel approach of producing composites from highly oriented recycled materials. The semi-finished stacks are consolidated in a heating press and test coupons are tested according to corresponding standards. The rCF-tapes are evaluated using methods such as tensile and flexural testing and determination of fiber volume content. Mechanical values are assessed by processing various generations of rCF-tapes and comparing them to each other and to virgin fiber tapes (vCF-tapes) made of the same type of carbon fiber and matrix. Microscopic imaging is also performed to analyze the quality of the resulting composites. In this study, a tensile strength of up to 1100 MPa in the fiber direction and stiffness of up to 80 GPa at a fiber volume content (FVC) of approximately 40% were achieved. The results highlight the strong potential and benefits of using highly oriented rCF-tapes and demonstrate the suitability of fiber placement technologies for those recycled materials. Full article

Long-range underwater gliders (LRUGs) have emerged as essential platforms for sustained and autonomous observation in deep and remote marine environments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of their developmental status, performance characteristics, and application progress. Emphasis is placed on two critical enabling technologies that fundamentally determine endurance: lightweight, pressure-resistant hull structures and high-efficiency buoyancy-driven propulsion systems. First, the role of carbon fiber composite pressure hulls in enhancing energy capacity and structural integrity is examined, with attention to material selection, fabrication methods, compressibility compatibility, and antifouling resistance. Second, the evolution of buoyancy control systems is analyzed, covering the transition to hybrid active–passive architectures, rapid-response actuators based on smart materials, thermohaline energy harvesting, and energy recovery mechanisms. Based on this analysis, the paper identifies four key technical challenges and proposes strategic research directions, including the development of ultralight, high-strength structural materials; integrated multi-mechanism antifouling technologies; energy-optimized coordinated buoyancy systems; and thermally adaptive glider platforms. Achieving a system architecture with ultra-long endurance, enhanced energy efficiency, and robust environmental adaptability is anticipated to be a foundational enabler for future long-duration missions and globally distributed underwater glider networks. Material Extrusion (MEX) process is increasingly used to fabricate components for structural applications, driven by the availability of advanced materials and greater industrial adoption. In these contexts, understanding the mechanical performance of printed parts is crucial. However, conventional methods for assessing anisotropic elastic behavior often rely on expensive equipment and time-consuming procedures. The aim of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the impulse excitation of vibration (IEV) in characterizing the dynamic mechanical properties of a 3D-printed composite material. Tensile tests were also performed to compare quasi-static properties with the dynamic ones obtained through IEV. The tested material, Nylon 12CF, contains 35% short carbon fibers by weight and is commercially available from Stratasys. It is used in the fused deposition modeling (FDM) process, a Material Extrusion technology, and exhibits anisotropic mechanical properties. This is further reinforced by the filament deposition process, which affects the mechanical response of printed parts. Young’s modulus obtained in the direction perpendicular to the deposition plane (E33), obtained via IEV, was 14.77% higher than the value in the technical datasheet. Comparing methods, the Young’s modulus obtained in the deposition plane, in an inclined direction of 45 degrees in relation to the deposition direction (E45), showed a 22.95% difference between IEV and tensile tests, while Poisson’s ratio in the deposition plane (v12) differed by 6.78%. This data is critical for designing parts subject to demanding service conditions, and the results obtained (orthotropic elastic properties) can be used in finite element simulation software. Ultimately, this work reinforces the potential of the IEV method as an accessible and consistent alternative for characterizing the anisotropic properties of components produced through additive manufacturing (AM). The growing popularity of Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), such as e-scooters, has revolutionized urban mobility by offering compact, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly transportation solutions. However, safety concerns, including inadequate infrastructure, poor protective measures, and high accident rates, remain critical challenges. This paper presents the design and development of an innovative self-balancing microvehicle under the H2020 LEONARDO project, which aims to address these challenges through advanced engineering and user-centric design. The vehicle combines features of monowheels and e-scooters, integrating cutting-edge technologies to enhance safety, stability, and usability. The design adheres to European regulations, including Germany’s eKFV standards, and incorporates user preferences identified through representative online surveys of 1500 PLEV users. These preferences include improved handling on uneven surfaces, enhanced signaling capabilities, and reduced instability during maneuvers. The prototype features a lightweight composite structure reinforced with carbon fibers, a high-torque motorized front wheel, and multiple speed modes tailored to different conditions, such as travel in pedestrian areas, use by novice riders, and advanced users. Braking tests demonstrate deceleration values of up to 3.5 m/s2, comparable to PLEV market standards and exceeding regulatory minimums, while smooth acceleration ramps ensure rider stability and safety. Additional features, such as identification plates and weight-dependent motor control, enhance compliance with local traffic rules and prevent misuse. The vehicle’s design also addresses common safety concerns, such as curb navigation and signaling, by incorporating large-diameter wheels, increased ground clearance, and electrically operated direction indicators. Future upgrades include the addition of a second rear wheel for enhanced stability, skateboard-like rear axle modifications for improved maneuverability, and hybrid supercapacitors to minimize fire risks and extend battery life. With its focus on safety, regulatory compliance, and rider-friendly innovations, this microvehicle represents a significant advancement in promoting safe and sustainable urban mobility. Full article

Experimental tests on confined concrete specimens are essential to characterize the mechanisms activated under varying degrees of confinement. Such characterization is critical for understanding how full, partial, and non-uniform wrapping configurations influence strength and ductility enhancements. This study investigates the compressive behavior of concrete cylinders (160 mm × 320 mm) confined using full, partial, and non-uniform carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) configurations. In the first phase, all wrapping schemes were applied with equivalent quantities of CFRP, enabling a direct performance comparison under material parity. The results indicate that non-uniform confinement (NUC) achieved approximately 15% higher axial strength than full confinement (FC2) using the same amount of CFRP. In the second phase, the NUC configuration was tested with 25% less CFRP material, yet the reduction in strength was limited to about 3%, demonstrating its superior efficiency. A new predictive model was developed to estimate peak axial stress and strain in CFRP-confined concrete cylinders. Compared to existing models, the proposed model demonstrated greater predictive accuracy (R2 = 0.98 for stress and 0.91 for strain) and reduced error metrics (RMSE and scatter index). ANOVA confirmed the statistical significance of the model’s predictions (p < 0.00001 for stress, p = 0.002 for strain). These findings highlight the performance advantages and material efficiency of non-uniform CFRP confinement and support the utility of the proposed model as a practical design tool for developing advanced confinement strategies in structural engineering. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted intense research interest owing to their unique one-dimensional structure and exceptional properties. However, when individual CNTs are assembled to macrostructures such as films and fibers, their electrical performance often deteriorates significantly. This review offers a comprehensive look at the recent progress in the electrical properties and measurement techniques of CNTs, ranging from individual nanotubes to their assemblies. Firstly, we explore the methods for measuring the electrical properties of individual CNTs, including scanning tunnelling microscopy, electron microscope-based nanoprobes, and measurements using nanodevices. Secondly, we examine how structural characteristics of CNTs (e.g., chirality, diameter, and defects) influence their electrical behaviors. A critical comparison between individual CNTs and their assemblies reveals the difficulties in transferring the electrical properties from nanoscale to bulk materials. Finally, we put forward strategies to boost the electrical conductivity of CNT assemblies and also sketch out future research and development directions. Full article

Bamboo gene science has witnessed significant advancements over the past two decades, driven by breakthroughs in gene cloning, marker-assisted breeding, sequencing, gene transformation, and gene editing technologies. These developments have not only enhanced our understanding of bamboo’s genetic diversity and adaptability but also provided critical tools for its genetic improvement. Compared to other crops, bamboo faces unique challenges, including its long vegetative growth cycle, environmental dependency, and limited genetic transformation efficiency. Then, the launch of China’s “Bamboo as a Substitute for Plastic” initiative in 2022, supported by the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, has opened new opportunities for bamboo gene science as well as for bamboo production systems. This policy framework has spurred research into bamboo genetic regulation, fiber-oriented recombination, and green separation technologies, aiming to develop sustainable alternatives to plastic. Future research directions include overcoming bamboo’s environmental limitations, improving genetic transformation efficiency, and deciphering the mechanisms behind its flowering. By addressing these challenges, bamboo genetic science can enhance its economic and ecological value, contributing to global sustainability goals and the “dual-carbon” strategy. Full article

Meso-Scale Numerical Analysis of the Torsional Size Effect of RC Beams Reinforced with CFRP Sheets Under Combined Bending and Torsion

In practical engineering, buildings are predominantly subjected to combined forces, and reinforced concrete (RC) beams serve as the primary load-bearing components of buildings. However, there is a paucity of research on the torsional effects of RC beams, particularly concerning the torsional failure mechanisms of large-size beams. To address this gap, this paper establishes a meso-scale numerical analysis model for RC beams reinforced with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets under combined bending and torsion pressures. The research analyzes how the fiber ratio and torsion-bending ratio govern torsion-induced failure characteristics and size effects in CFRP-strengthened RC beams. The results indicate that an increase in the fiber ratio leads to accumulated damage distribution in the RC beam, a gradual decrease in CFRP sheet strain, and an increase in peak load and peak torque, albeit with diminishing amplitudes; as the torsion-bending ratio increases, crack distribution becomes more concentrated, the angle between cracks and the horizontal direction decreases, overall peak load decreases, peak torque increases, and CFRP sheet strain increases; and the nominal torsional capacity of CFRP-strengthened RC beams declines with increasing size, exhibiting a reduction of 24.1% to 35.6%, which distinctly demonstrates the torsional size effect under bending–torsion coupling conditions. A modified Torque Size Effect Law is formulated, characterizing in quantitative terms the dependence of the fiber ratio and the torsion-bending ratio. Full article

In engineering practice, liquid droplet impingement typically occurs at an oblique angle relative to the target surface, yet the influence of impact orientation on damage outcomes remains contentious and exhibits target-material dependency. In this paper, a typical single-waterjet-generating technique is applied to liquid impact tests on a unidirectional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate, with special focus on the effects of the impingement angle and the fiber orientation. Finite-element simulation is employed to help reveal the failure mechanism of oblique impacts. The results show that, in most cases, the damage caused by a 15° oblique impact is slightly larger than that of a normal impact, while the increase amplitude varies with different impact speeds. Resin removal is more prone to occur when the projection of the waterjet velocity on the impact surface is perpendicular (marked as the fiber orientation PE) rather than parallel (marked as the fiber orientation PA) to the fiber direction of the top layer. A PE fiber orientation can lead to mass material peeling in comparison with PA, and the damage range is even much larger than for a normal impact. The underlying mechanism can be attributed to the increased lateral jet-particle velocity and resultant shear stress along the impact projection direction. The distinct damage modes observed on the CFRP laminate with the different fiber orientations PE and PA originate from the asymmetric tensile properties in the longitudinal/transverse directions of laminates coupled with dissimilar fiber–matrix interfacial characteristics. A theoretical model for the surface damage area under a single-jet impact was established through experimental data fitting based on a modified water-hammer pressure contact-radius formulation. The model quantitatively characterizes the influence of critical parameters, including the jet velocity, diameter, and impact angle, on the central area of the surface failure ring. Full article

Discontinuous fibers are commonly added to matrix materials in additive manufacturing to enhance properties, but such benefits may be constrained by print and fiber orientation. The additive processes of forming rasters and layers in powder bed fusion inherently cause anisotropy in printed parts. Many print parameters, such as laser, temperature, and hatch pattern, influence the anisotropy of tensile properties. This study characterizes fiber orientation attributed to recoating non-encapsulated fibers and the resulting anisotropic tensile properties. Tensile and fracture properties of polyamide 12 reinforced with 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10% discontinuous carbon fibers by volume were characterized in two primary print/tensile loading orientations: tensile loading parallel to the recoater (“horizontal specimens”) and tensile load along the build axis (“vertical specimens”). Density and fractographic analysis indicate a homogeneous mixture with low porosity and primary fiber orientation along the recoating direction for both print orientations. Neat specimens (zero fiber) loaded in either direction have similar tensile properties. However, fiber-reinforced vertical specimens have significantly reduced consistency and tensile strength as fiber content increased, while the opposite is true for horizontal specimens. These datasets and results provide a mechanism to tune material properties and improve the functionality of selectively laser-sintered fiber-reinforced parts through print orientation selection. These datasets could be used to customize functionally graded parts with multi-material selective laser-sintering manufacturing. Full article

Co-firing large-sized straw biomass in pulverized coal boilers is a potential pathway for carbon emission reduction in China’s thermal power plants. However, experimental data on large-sized straw combustion under pulverized coal boiler combustion conditions are critically lacking. This study selected typical large-sized wheat straw particles. Employing a two-mode experimental setup in a drop tube furnace (DTF) system simulating pulverized coal boiler conditions, we systematically investigated the combustion behavior and alkali metal release characteristics of this large-sized straw biomass, with combustion processes summarized for diverse particle types. The findings reveal asynchronous combustion progression across particle surfaces due to heterogeneous mass transfer and gas diffusion; unique behaviors distinct from denser woody biomass, including bending deformation, fiber branching, and fragmentation, occur; significant and morphology-specific deformations occur during devolatilization; fragmentation universally produces particles of varied shapes (needle-like, flaky, blocky, semi-tubular) during char combustion; and potassium release exceeds 35% after complete devolatilization and surpasses 50% at a burnout degree exceeding 80%. This work provides essential experimental data on the fundamental combustion characteristics and alkali metal release of large-sized wheat straw particles under pulverized coal boiler combustion conditions, offering engineering application guidance for the direct co-firing of large-sized flexible straw biomass in pulverized coal boilers. This study explores the mechanical behavior of polymer and composite specimens fabricated using fused deposition modeling (FDM), focusing on three material configurations: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), carbon fiber-reinforced polyphthalamide (PPA/Cf), and a sandwich-structured composite. A systematic experimental plan was developed using the Box–Behnken design (BBD) to investigate the effects of material type (MT), infill pattern (IP), and printing direction (PD) on tensile and flexural strength. Experimental results showed that the PPA/Cf material with a “Cross” IP printed “Flat” yielded the highest mechanical performance, achieving a tensile strength of 75.8 MPa and a flexural strength of 102.3 MPa. In contrast, the lowest values were observed in ABS parts with a “Grid” pattern and “Upright” orientation, recording 37.8 MPa tensile and 49.5 MPa flexural strength. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) results confirmed that all three factors significantly influenced both outputs (p < 0.001), with MT being the most dominant factor. Machine learning (ML) algorithms, Bayesian linear regression (BLR), and Gaussian process regression (GPR) were employed to predict mechanical performance. GPR achieved the best overall accuracy with R2 = 0.9935 and MAPE = 11.14% for tensile strength and R2 = 0.9925 and MAPE = 12.96% for flexural strength. Comparatively, the traditional BBD yielded slightly lower performance with MAPE = 13.02% and R2 = 0.9895 for tensile strength. Validation tests conducted on three unseen configurations clearly demonstrated the generalization capability of the models. Based on actual vs. predicted values, the GPR yielded the lowest average prediction errors, with MAPE values of 0.54% for tensile and 0.45% for flexural strength. In comparison, BLR achieved 0.79% and 0.60%, while BBD showed significantly higher errors at 1.76% and 1.32%, respectively. Full article

Achieving carbon neutrality requires not only reducing CO2 emissions but also capturing atmospheric CO2. Direct air capture (DAC) using amine-based adsorbents has emerged as a promising approach. In this study, we developed amine-epoxy/poly(vinyl alcohol) (AE/PVA) nanofibers via electrospinning and in situ thermal polymerization. PVA was incorporated to enhance spinnability, and B-staging of AE enabled fiber formation without inline heating. We systematically investigated the effects of electrospinning parameters, epoxy-to-amine ratios (E/A), and the degree of PVA saponification on CO2 adsorption performance. Thinner fibers, obtained by adjusting spinning conditions, exhibited faster adsorption kinetics due to increased surface area. Varying the E/A revealed a trade-off between adsorption capacity and low-temperature desorption efficiency, with secondary amines offering a balanced performance. Additionally, highly saponified PVA improved thermal durability by minimizing side reactions with amines. These findings highlight the importance of optimizing fiber morphology, chemical composition, and polymer properties to enhance the performance and stability of AE/PVA nanofibers for DAC applications. With the rapid development of wearable electronics, traditional rigid thermal management materials face limitations in flexibility, conformability, and multi-physics adaptability. Low-dimensional carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes combine ultrahigh thermal conductivity with outstanding mechanical compliance, making them promising building blocks for flexible thermal regulation. This review summarizes recent advances in integrating these materials into textile architectures, mapping the evolution of this emerging field. Key topics include phonon-dominated heat transfer mechanisms, strategies for modulating interfacial thermal resistance, and dimensional effects across scales; beyond these intrinsic factors, hierarchical textile configurations further tailor macroscopic performance. We highlight how one-dimensional fiber bundles, two-dimensional woven fabrics, and three-dimensional porous networks construct multi-directional thermal pathways while enhancing porosity and stress tolerance. As for practical applications, the performance of carbon-based textiles in wearable systems, flexible electronic packaging, and thermal coatings is also critically assessed. Current obstacles—namely limited manufacturing scalability, interfacial mismatches, and thermal performance degradation under repeated deformation—are analyzed. To overcome these challenges, future studies should prioritize the co-design of structural and thermo-mechanical properties, the integration of multiple functionalities, and optimization guided by data-driven approaches. This review thus lays a solid foundation for advancing carbon-based smart textiles toward next-generation flexible thermal management technologies. Full article

The growing application of carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) in construction opens new possibilities for replacing traditional materials such as steel, particularly in strengthening and retrofitting concrete structures. CFRP materials offer notable advantages, including high tensile strength, low self-weight, corrosion resistance, and the ability to be tailored to complex geometries. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current technologies used to strengthen concrete columns, with a particular focus on the application of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes in composite column systems. The manufacturing processes of FRP composites are discussed, emphasizing the influence of resin types and fabrication methods on the mechanical properties and durability of composite elements. This review also analyzes how factors such as fiber type, orientation, thickness, and application method affect the load-bearing capacity of both newly constructed and retrofitted damaged concrete elements. Furthermore, the paper identifies research gaps concerning the use of perforated CFRP tubes as internal reinforcement components. Considering the increasing interest in innovative column strengthening methods, this paper highlights future research directions, particularly the application of perforated CFRP tubes combined with external composite strengthening and self-compacting concrete (SCC).
