The abrasion resistance of fabrics is one of the basic properties determining the utility performance and durability. The abrasion resistance of textile materials is measured using the Martindale device according to appropriate standards. The sample breakage method is the most commonly used of the three methods. The method is based on organoleptic assessment of fabric breakage. The method is time-consuming, and results may be subject to error resulting from the subjective nature of the assessment. The aim of the presented work was to check the possibility of the application of contactless 3D surface geometry measurement using an optical profilometer in an assessment of changes in fabrics’ surface due to the abrasion process. The obtained results confirmed that some parameters of the geometric structure of fabric surfaces, such as the highest height of the roughness profile Rz, the height of the highest pick of the roughness profile Rp, the depth of the lowest valley of the roughness profile Rv, the depth of the total height of the roughness profile Rt, and the kurtosis Rku, can be used to assess the abrasion resistance of fabrics. It is also stated that using the non-contact optical measurement of fabric surface geometry allows for an assessment of the directionality of surface texture. For this purpose, the autocorrelation function and angle distribution function can be applied. Full article

Difficult, extreme operating conditions of parabolic antennas under precipitation and sub-zero temperatures require the creation of effective heating systems. The purpose of the research is to develop a multilayer coating containing two metal-ceramic layers, epoxy composite layers, carbon fabric, and an outer layer of basalt fabric, which allows for effective heating of the antenna, and to study the properties of this coating. The multilayer coating was formed on an aluminum base that was subjected to abrasive jet processing. The first and second metal-ceramic layers, Al2O3 + 5% Al, which were applied by high-speed multi-chamber cumulative detonation spraying (CDS), respectively, provide maximum adhesion strength to the aluminum base and high adhesion strength to the third layer of the epoxy composite containing Al2O3. On this not-yet-polymerized layer of epoxy composite containing Al2O3, a layer of carbon fabric (impregnated with epoxy resin) was formed, which serves as a resistive heating element. On top of this carbon fabric, a layer of epoxy composite containing Cr2O3 and SiO2 was applied. Next, basalt fabric was applied to this still-not-yet-polymerized layer. Then, the resulting layered coating was compacted and dried. To study this multilayer coating, X-ray analysis, light and raster scanning microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used. The thickness of the coating layers and microhardness were measured on transverse microsections. The adhesion strength of the metal-ceramic coating layers to the aluminum base was determined by both bending testing and peeling using the adhesive method. It was established that CDS provides the formation of metal-ceramic layers with a maximum fraction of lamellae and a microhardness of 7900–10,520 MPa. In these metal-ceramic layers, a dispersed subgrain structure, a uniform distribution of nanoparticles, and a gradient-free level of dislocation density are observed. Such a structure prevents the formation of local concentrators of internal stresses, thereby increasing the level of dispersion and substructural strengthening of the metal-ceramic layers’ material. The formation of materials with a nanostructure increases their strength and crack resistance. The effectiveness of using aluminum, chromium, and silicon oxides as nanofillers in epoxy composite layers was demonstrated. The presence of structures near the surface of these nanofillers, which differ from the properties of the epoxy matrix in the coating, was established. Such zones, specifically the outer surface layers (OSL), significantly affect the properties of the epoxy composite. The results of industrial tests showed the high performance of the multilayer coating during antenna heating. Full article

WS2 coating, as a solid lubricating material, plays a significant role in the lubrication of rotating components in spacecraft. During the launch process, however, spacecraft are exposed to high-temperature and humid atmospheric environments, which can lead to oxidative failure in the coating, thereby limiting its engineering applications. By doping with B elements, B/WS2 was successfully prepared as a composite coating. The results demonstrate that the fabricated coating exhibits excellent high-temperature tribological performance in atmospheric environments. The mechanism through which B doping improves the high-temperature friction and wear properties of the WS2 composite coating was revealed through high-temperature friction and wear tests. With the incorporation of B elements, the average friction coefficient of the coating was 0.071, and the wear rate was 7.63 × 10−7 mm3·N−1·m−1, with the wear mechanisms identified as abrasive wear and spalling. Due to high-temperature oxidation, thermal decomposition effects, and the formation of WB4 during sputtering, the wear resistance and anti-plastic deformation capability of the coating were further improved. Compared to room-temperature test conditions, the B/WS2 composite coating at different high temperatures exhibited superior friction coefficients and wear rates. Notably, at 150 °C, the average friction coefficient was as low as 0.015, and the wear forms were abrasive wear and adhesive wear. Full article

A recently proposed method called “controlled swelling of monolithic films” was implemented to prepare ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) ultrafiltration membranes. For the first time, the effect of UHMWPE molecular weight (MW) on the structure and properties of the membranes prepared via this special case of thermally induced phase separation was studied in detail. The morphology and properties of the membranes were studied using SEM, DSC, liquid–liquid displacement porometry, and standard methods for the evaluation of mechanical properties, permeance, rejection, and abrasion resistance. High-quality membranes with a tensile strength of 5.0–17.8 MPa, a mean pore size of 25–50 nm, permeance of 17–107 L m−2 h−1 bar−1, rejection of model contaminant (blue dextran) of 72–98%, and great abrasion resistance can be prepared only if the MW of the polymer in the initial monolithic film is sufficiently high. The properties of the membranes can effectively be controlled by changing the MW of the polymer and the mass fraction of the latter in the swollen film. Shrinkage is responsible for the variation in the membrane properties. The membranes prepared from a higher-MW polymer are more prone to shrinking after the removal of the solvent. Shrinkage decreases before rising again and minimizes with an increase in the polymer content in the swollen film. Full article

Compared to traditional dense asphalt concrete mixtures, stone mastic asphalt (SMA) generally offers superior performance in terms of its mechanical resistance and extended pavement lifespan. Focusing on the Norwegian scenario, this laboratory-based study investigated the durability of SMA considering the influence of the aggregate shape and petrography. The rock aggregates were classified according to three different-shaped refinement stages involving vertical shaft impact crushing. Further, the aggregates were sourced from three distinct locations (Jelsa, Tau and Dirdal) characterized by different petrographic origins: granodiorite, quartz diorite and granite, respectively. Two mixtures with maximum aggregate sizes of 16 mm (SMA 16) and 11 mm (SMA 11) were designed according to Norwegian standards and investigated in terms of their durability performance. In this regard, two main functional tests were performed for the asphalt mixture, namely resistance against permanent deformation and abrasion by studded tyres, and one for the asphalt mortar, namely water sensitivity. Overall, the best test results were related to the aggregates sourced from Jelsa and Tau, thus highlighting that the geological origin exerts a major impact on SMA’s durability performance. On the other hand, the different aggregate shapes related to the crushing refinement treatments seem to play an effective but secondary role. Full article

Tribological processes in extreme environments pose serious material challenges, requiring coatings that resist both wear and corrosion. This review summarizes recent advances in protective coatings engineered for extreme environments such as high temperatures, chemically aggressive media, and high-pressure and abrasive domains, as well as cryogenic and space applications. A comprehensive overview of promising coating materials is provided, including ceramic-based coatings, metallic and alloy coatings, and polymer and composite systems, as well as nanostructured and multilayered architectures. These materials are deployed using advanced coating technologies such as thermal spraying (plasma spray, high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF), and cold spray), chemical and physical vapor deposition (CVD and PVD), electrochemical methods (electrodeposition), additive manufacturing, and in situ coating approaches. Key degradation mechanisms such as adhesive and abrasive wear, oxidation, hot corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and tribocorrosion are examined with coating performance. The review also explores application-specific needs in aerospace, marine, energy, biomedical, and mining sectors operating in aggressive physiological environments. Emerging trends in the field are highlighted, including self-healing and smart coatings, environmentally friendly coating technologies, functionally graded and nanostructured coatings, and the integration of machine learning in coating design and optimization. Finally, the review addresses broader considerations such as scalability, cost-effectiveness, long-term durability, maintenance requirements, and environmental regulations. This comprehensive analysis aims to synthesize current knowledge while identifying future directions for innovation in protective coatings for extreme environments. Full article

This study focuses on the optimization of valve assemblies in downhole rod pumping units (DRPUs), which remain the predominant artificial lift technology in oil production worldwide. The research addresses the critical issue of premature failures in DRPUs caused by leakage in valve pairs, i.e., a problem that accounts for approximately 15% of all failures, as identified in a statistical analysis of the 2022 operational data from the Uzen oilfield in Kazakhstan. The leakage is primarily attributed to the accumulation of mechanical impurities and paraffin deposits between the valve ball and seat, leading to concentrated surface wear and compromised sealing. To mitigate this issue, a novel valve assembly design was developed featuring a flow turbulizer positioned beneath the valve seat. The turbulizer generates controlled vortex motion in the fluid flow, which increases the rotational frequency of the valve ball during operation. This motion promotes more uniform wear across the contact surfaces and reduces the risk of localized degradation. The turbulizers were manufactured using additive FDM technology, and several design variants were tested in a full-scale laboratory setup simulating downhole conditions. Experimental results revealed that the most effective configuration was a spiral plate turbulizer with a 7.5 mm width, installed without axis deviation from the vertical, which achieved the highest ball rotation frequency and enhanced lapping effect between the ball and the seat. Subsequent field trials using valves with duralumin-based turbulizers demonstrated increased operational lifespans compared to standard valves, confirming the viability of the proposed solution. However, cases of abrasive wear were observed under conditions of high mechanical impurity concentration, indicating the need for more durable materials. To address this, the study recommends transitioning to 316 L stainless steel for turbulizer fabrication due to its superior tensile strength, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance. Implementing this design improvement can significantly reduce maintenance intervals, improve pump reliability, and lower operating costs in mature oilfields with high water cut and solid content. The findings of this research contribute to the broader efforts in petroleum engineering to enhance the longevity and performance of artificial lift systems through targeted mechanical design improvements and material innovation. Phonolite is a fine-grained, shallow extrusive rock rich in alkali minerals and containing iron/titanium-bearing minerals. This rock is widely used as a construction material for building exteriors due to its excellent abrasion resistance and insulation properties. However, during the cutting process, approximately 70% of the rock is discarded as tailing. So, this study aims to repurpose tailings from a phonolite cutting and sizing plant into a high-alkali ceramic raw mineral concentrate. To enable the use of phonolite tailings in ceramic manufacturing, it is necessary to remove coloring iron/titanium-bearing minerals, which negatively affect the final product. To achieve this removal, dry/wet magnetic separation processes, along with flotation, were employed both individually and in combination. The results demonstrated that using dry high-intensity magnetic separation (DHIMS) resulted in a concentrate with an Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of 0.95% and a removal efficiency of 85%. The wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) process reduced the Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of the concentrate to 1.2%, with 70% removal efficiency. During flotation tests, both pH levels and collector concentration impacted the efficiency and Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade (%) of the concentrate. The lowest Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of 1.65% was achieved at a pH level of 10 with a collector concentration of 2000 g/t. Flotation concentrates processed with DHIMS achieved a minimum Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of 0.90%, while those processed with WHIMS exhibited higher Fe2O3 + TiO2 grades (>1.1%) and higher recovery rates (80%). Additionally, studies on flotation applied to WHIMS concentrates showed that collector concentration, pulp density, and conditioning time significantly influenced the Fe2O3 + TiO2 grade of the final concentrate. Superhydrophobic coatings possess distinct wettability characteristics and hold significant potential in metal corrosion protection and underwater drag reduction. However, their practical application is often hindered by poor durability arising from the fragility of their micro/nanostructured surface roughness. In this study, a durable superhydrophobic coating featuring a hierarchical, hydrangea-like micro/nanostructure was successfully fabricated on an aluminum alloy substrate via a simple one-step cold-spraying technique. The coating consisted of hydrangea-shaped SiO2 nanoparticles modified with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDT) to produce multiscale roughness, while epoxy resin (EP) served as the binding matrix to enhance mechanical integrity. The hydrangea-like SiO2 nanostructures were characterized by solid cores and wrinkled, petal-like outgrowths. This unique morphology not only increased the surface roughness but also provided more active sites for air entrapment, thereby enhancing the coating’s overall performance. The h-SiO2@PFDT-EP composite coating exhibited excellent superhydrophobicity, with a WCA of 170.1° ± 0.8° and a SA of 2.7° ± 0.5°. Durability was evaluated through sandpaper abrasion, tape peeling, acid and alkali immersion, artificial weathering, and salt spray tests. The results demonstrated that the coating retained stable superhydrophobic performance under various environmental stresses. Compared with bare 6061 aluminum and EP coatings, its corrosion current density was reduced by four and three orders of magnitude, respectively. Furthermore, the coating achieved a maximum drag-reduction rate of 31.01% within a velocity range of 1.31–7.86 m/s. The coating also displayed excellent self-cleaning properties. Owing to its outstanding durability, corrosion resistance, and drag-reducing capability, this one-step fabricated superhydrophobic coating showed great promise for applications in marine engineering and defense. The global plastic crisis has generated significant interest in repurposing waste plastics as asphalt modifiers, presenting both environmental and engineering advantages. This study offers a comprehensive review of the applications of waste plastics in asphalt, focusing on their types, modification mechanisms, incorporation techniques, and environmental impacts, alongside proposed mitigation strategies. Commonly utilized plastics include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), each affecting asphalt performance differently—enhancing high-temperature stability and fatigue resistance while exhibiting varying levels of compatibility and environmental risks. The incorporation techniques, namely wet and dry processes, differ in terms of efficiency, cost, and environmental footprint: the wet process enhances durability but requires more energy, whereas the dry process is more cost-effective but may lead to uneven dispersion. Environmental concerns associated with these practices include toxic emissions (such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds) during production, microplastic generation through abrasion and weathering, and ecological contamination of soil and water. Mitigation strategies encompass optimizing plastic selection, improving pre-treatment and compatibilization methods, controlling high-temperature processing, and monitoring the spread of microplastics. This review highlights the need for balanced adoption of waste plastic-modified asphalt, emphasizing sustainable practices to maximize benefits while minimizing risks. Full article

Nickel-based superalloy Hastelloy C276 is widely used in high-performance industries due to its strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability. However, these same properties pose substantial challenges in machining, resulting in high tool wear, surface defects, and dimensional inaccuracies. This study investigates methods to enhance machining performance and surface quality by evaluating the tribological behavior of TiSiN/TiAlN-coated carbide inserts under six cooling and lubrication conditions: dry, MQL with coconut oil, Cryo-LN2, Cryo-LCO2, MQL–Cryo-LN2, and MQL–Cryo-LCO2. Open-slot finishing was performed at constant cutting parameters, and key indicators such as cutting zone temperature, tool wear, surface roughness, chip morphology, and microhardness were analyzed. The hybrid MQL–Cryo-LN2 approach significantly outperformed other methods, reducing cutting zone temperature, tool wear, and surface roughness by 116.4%, 94.34%, and 76.11%, respectively, compared to dry machining. SEM and EDS analyses confirmed abrasive, oxidative, and adhesive wear as the dominant mechanisms. The MQL–Cryo-LN2 strategy also lowered microhardness, in contrast to a 39.7% increase observed under dry conditions. Modified Water-Dispersion Compositions Based on Synthesized Dispersions and Hollow Glass Microspheres with Improved Protective Characteristics

During the operation of structures, the components and materials from which they are made are exposed to various environmental, technological, and operational impacts. In this context, the use of a modified water-dispersion composition containing finely dispersed fillers with enhanced protective and performance characteristics proves to be effective. This article examines the development of a paint-and-coating composition using hollow glass microspheres and modified diatomite as finely dispersed fillers. The influence of technological factors on the properties of coating materials based on a synthesized acrylic dispersion and fillers—such as modified diatomite and hollow glass microspheres ranging from 20 to 100 μm in size with a bulk density of 0.107–0.252 g/cm3—is analyzed. The optimal formulation of the coating materials was determined to ensure the required coating quality. Experimental results demonstrate the improved strength and hardness of the coating due to the use of acrylic dispersion obtained through an emulsifier-free method and modifiers in the form of finely dispersed fillers. It has been established that the resulting samples also exhibit high adhesion to mineral and metallic substrates, along with excellent corrosion resistance. Moreover, the incorporation of acrylic dispersion contributes to increased elasticity of the coating, resulting in improved resistance to washing and abrasion. The developed protective material can be applied to a variety of surfaces, including walls, ceilings, and roofs of buildings and structures, pipelines, and many other applications. Thus, modified water-dispersion compositions based on synthesized acrylic dispersion showed the following results: resistance to sticking—5, which is the best; chemical resistance and gloss level with standard single-phase acrylic dispersion—no destruction or change in gloss. The adhesion of coatings cured under natural conditions and under the influence of UV radiation was 1 point. The developed formulations for obtaining water-dispersion paint and varnish compositions based on synthesized polymer dispersions, activated diatomite, and hollow glass microspheres, meet all the regulatory requirements for paint and varnish materials in terms of performance, and in terms of economic indicators, the cost of 1 kg of paint is 30% lower than the standard. This study investigated the effect of adding superhard ReB2 to atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) coatings based on 60 wt% Al2O3 and 40 wt% ZrO2. The amorphous phases commonly present in such coatings are known to impair their performance. ReB2 was introduced as a crystallization nucleus due to its high melting point. ReB2 decomposes in the presence of moisture and oxygen into H3BO3, ReO3, HBO2, and HReO4. ReB2 was encapsulated with Al2O3 via metallothermic synthesis to improve moisture stability, yielding a powder with d90 = 15.1 μm. After milling, it was added at 20 wt% to the Al2O3-ZrO2 feedstock. Agglomeration parameters were optimized, and coatings were deposited under varying APS conditions onto 316L steel substrates with a NiAl bond coat. In the coating with the highest ReB2 content, the identified phases included ReB2 (2.6 wt%), Re (0.8 wt%), α-Al2O3 (30.9 wt%), η-Al2O3 (32.4 wt%), and monoclinic and tetragonal ZrO2. The nanohardness of the coating, measured using a Vickers indenter at 96 mN and calculated via the Oliver–Pharr method, was 9.2 ± 1.0 GPa. High abrasion resistance was obtained for the coating with a higher content of η-Al2O3 (48.7 wt%). The coefficient of friction, determined using a ball-on-disc test with a corundum ball, was 0.798 ± 0.03. After 15 months, the formation of (H3O)(ReO4) was observed, suggesting initial moisture-induced changes. The results confirm that Al2O3-encapsulated ReB2 can enhance phase stability and crystallinity in APS coatings. Full article

Wide-range electric submersible centrifugal pumps (ESPs) are critical for offshore oilfields but suffer from narrow high-efficiency ranges and frictional losses under dynamic reservoir conditions. This study introduces bio-inspired dimple-type non-smooth surfaces on impeller blades to enhance hydraulic performance. A combined numerical-experimental approach was employed: a 3D CFD model with the k-ω turbulence model analyzed oil–water flow (1:9 ratio) to identify optimal dimple placement, while parametric studies tested diameters (0.6–1.2 mm). Experimental validation used 3D-printed prototypes. Results revealed that dimples on the pressure surface trailing edge reduced boundary layer separation, achieving a 12.98% head gain and 8.55% efficiency improvement at 150 m3/d in simulations, with experimental tests showing an 11.5% head increase and 4.6% efficiency gain at 130 m3/d. The optimal dimple diameter (0.9 mm, 2% of blade chord) balanced performance and manufacturability, demonstrating that bio-inspired surfaces improve ESP efficiency. This work provides practical guidelines for deploying drag reduction technologies in petroleum engineering, with a future focus on wear resistance in abrasive flows. Full article

Polyimide (PI), owing to its high heat resistance and low density, is often employed as a substitute for metallic materials in high-temperature environments, such as aircraft engines, bearings, and gears. However, the relatively high friction coefficient of pure PI limits its application under harsh conditions. Therefore, this study synthesized a composite lubricant with binary fillers to improve this performance. This study employed the hydrothermal method to synthesize MoS2/MXene composite lubricating fillers and systematically investigated the high-temperature tribological properties of PI composites reinforced with these fillers. The results demonstrated that the optimal PI composite containing 5% MoS2/MXene exhibited a 14 °C increase in initial decomposition temperature compared to pure PI. Additionally, its thermal conductivity was enhanced by 36%, while the hardness (0.398 GPa) and elastic modulus (6.294 GPa) were elevated by 12.4% and 18.6%, respectively, relative to the pure PI. In terms of tribological behavior, all composite formulations displayed typical temperature-dependent friction characteristics. It is worth noting that MXene’s high hardness and thermal conductivity inhibited the occurrence of abrasive wear. At the same time, the substrate was strengthened, and thermal resistance was enhanced, thereby delaying the plastic deformation of the material at high temperatures. Full article
