Drought disturbances are becoming more frequent with global warming. Accurately assessing the regulatory effect of drought on vegetation phenology is key to understanding terrestrial ecosystem response mechanisms in the context of climate change. Previous studies on cumulative and lagged effects of drought on vegetation growth have mostly focused on a single vegetation type or the overall vegetation NDVI, overlooking the possible influence of different adaptation strategies of different vegetation types and differences in drought effects on different phenological nodes. This study investigates the cumulative and lagged effects of drought on vegetation phenology across a region of East Asia from 2001 to 2020 using NDVI data and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). We analyzed the start of growing season (SOS) and end of growing season (EOS) responses to drought across four vegetation types: deciduous needleleaf forests (DNFs), deciduous broadleaf forests (DBFs), shrublands, and grasslands. Results reveal contrasting phenological responses: drought delayed SOS in grasslands through a “drought escape” strategy but advanced SOS in forests and shrublands. All vegetation types showed earlier EOS under drought stress. Cumulative drought effects were strongest on DNFs, SOS, and shrubland SOS, while lagged effects dominated DBFs and grassland SOS. Drought impacts varied with moisture conditions: they were stronger in dry regions for SOS but more pronounced in humid areas for EOS. By confirming that drought effects vary by vegetation type and phenology node, these findings enhance our understanding of vegetation adaptation strategies and ecosystem responses to climate stress. Cutibacterium acnes is linked to the prevalent inflammatory skin disorder known as Acne Vulgaris (AV). Some topical agents exhibit unfavorable side effects like dryness and skin inflammation, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an increasing risk to effective AV management. This study develops and characterizes stable topical essential oil (EO)-loaded microemulgels with in vitro validated antimicrobial activities against C. acnes ATCC 6919, providing a solid scientific basis for their effectiveness. These microemulgels, with their potential to serve as an alternative to AMR-prone synthetic agents, could revolutionize the field of acne treatment. The MICs of the EOs (citronella, tea tree, and lemongrass) against C. acnes were determined. EO-loaded microemulgels were developed using a blend of microemulsion and carbopol/hyaluronic acid gel in a ratio of 1:1 and characterized, and their stability was observed over three months. The MICs of citronella, tea tree, and lemongrass EOs were 0.08, 0.16, and 0.62% v/v, respectively. The microemulgels were whitish and smooth, with characteristic EO odors. They demonstrated pH values ranging between 4.81 ± 0.20 and 5.00 ± 0.03, good homogeneity, a spreadability of 9.79 ± 0.6 and 12.76 ± 0.8 cm2, a viscosity of 29,500 and 31,130 cP, and retained stability at 4, 25, and 40 °C. EO-loaded microemulgels were developed with the potential of C. acnes management. The formulation shows adequate potential for further pharmaceutical development towards translational adoption in acne management. Full article

Bifora testiculata (L.) Spreng. (Apiaceae), an understudied species endemic to the Mediterranean and the only representative species of the genus Bifora in Sicily, was investigated for the first time for its essential oil (EO) chemical composition and cytotoxic properties. The EO was obtained via hydrodistillation and analyzed using GC-MS, revealing an aldehyde-rich profile (86.10%), dominated by trans-2-dodecenal (67.49%). Comparative analysis with previous studies on B. testiculata from Greece confirmed a similar aldehyde-rich profile, although minor compositional differences suggest potential chemotype variation. Given the biological relevance of trans-2-dodecenal and related aldehydes, further investigations into the cytotoxic properties of the EO of B. testiculata (Bt) and its main constituent against cancer cell lines were undertaken. Three human tumor cell lines (MDA-MB 231, A375, and CaCo2) and a human non-tumor cell line (HEK293) were subjected to viability tests using the MTT assay. The EO and trans-2-dodecenal exhibited remarkable cytotoxic activity against all cell lines, with IC50 values ranging between 7.93 and 14.41 µg/mL for Bt and between 1.88 and 5.29 µg/mL for trans-2-dodecenal. AO/BE fluorescent staining and Hoechst nuclear staining showed the presence of apoptotic bodies in the treated cells. N-acetyl-L-cysteine was able to invert the effects of Bt and trans-2-dodecenal on cell lines, suggesting ROS involvement in cytotoxic activity. The results demonstrated that the Bt cytotoxic activity was mainly due to the presence of trans-2-dodecenal. Full article

Annona amazonica R.E. Fries (synonyms Annona amazonica var. lancifolia R.E. Fries), popularly known in Brazil as “envireira”, is a tropical tree belonging to the Annonaceae family and is traditionally used as a food source. In this work, the in vitro and in vivo anti-liver cancer effects of essential oil (EO) from A. amazonica leaves were investigated for the first time. The chemical composition of the EO was evaluated via GC–MS and GC–FID. The alamar blue assay was used to evaluate the cytotoxicity of EOs against different cancerous and noncancerous cell lines. Cell cycle analyses, YO-PRO-1/PI staining, and rhodamine 123 staining were performed via flow cytometry in HepG2 cells treated with EO. The in vivo antitumor activity of EO was evaluated in NSG mice that were xenografted with HepG2 cells and treated with EO at a dose of 60 mg/kg. The major constituents (>5%) of the EO were (E)-caryophyllene (32.01%), 1,8-cineole (13.93%), α-copaene (7.77%), α-humulene (7.15%), and α-pinene (5.13%). EO increased apoptosis and proportionally decreased the number of viable HepG2 cells. The induction of DNA fragmentation and cell shrinkage together with a significant reduction in the ΔΨm in EO-treated HepG2 cells confirmed that EO can induce apoptosis. A significant 39.2% inhibition of tumor growth in vivo was detected in EO-treated animals. These data indicate the anti-liver cancer potential of EO from A. amazonica leaves. Full article

A modular strategy for the molecular design of silicone-based antifoaming agents was developed by precisely controlling the architecture of poly (methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS). Sixteen PMHS variants were synthesized by systematically varying the siloxane chain length (L1–L4), backbone composition (D3T1 vs. D30T1), and terminal group chemistry (H- vs. M-type). These structural modifications resulted in a broad range of Si-H functionalities, which were quantitatively analyzed and correlated with defoaming performance. The PMHS matrices were integrated with high-viscosity PDMS, a nonionic surfactant, and covalently grafted fumed silica—which was chemically matched to each PMHS backbone—to construct formulation-specific defoaming systems with enhanced interfacial compatibility and colloidal stability. Comprehensive physicochemical characterization via FT-IR, 1H NMR, GPC, TGA, and surface tension analysis revealed a nonmonotonic relationship between Si-H content and defoaming efficiency. Formulations containing 0.1–0.3 wt% Si-H achieved peak performance, with suppression efficiencies up to 96.6% and surface tensions as low as 18.9 mN/m. Deviations from this optimal range impaired performance due to interfacial over-reactivity or reduced mobility. Furthermore, thermal stability and molecular weight distribution were found to be governed by repeat unit architecture and terminal group selection. Compared with conventional EO/PO-modified commercial defoamers, the PMHS-based systems exhibited markedly improved suppression durability and formulation stability in high-viscosity environments. These results establish a predictive structure–property framework for tailoring antifoaming agents and highlight PMHS-based formulations as advanced foam suppressors with improved functionality. This study provides actionable design criteria for high-performance silicone materials with strong potential for application in thermally and mechanically demanding environments such as coating, bioprocessing, and polymer manufacturing. Background/Objective: Accurately identifying women at high risk for preterm birth among those with threatened preterm labor (PTL) is crucial for effective interventions or tocolytic management to reduce preterm birth and its complications. This study aimed to determine the predictive value of cervical elastography for preterm delivery before 37 weeks of gestation in patients with threatened PTL and a cervical length greater than 15 mm. Methods: This prospective cohort study included pregnant women presenting with threatened PTL at between 24 and 34 weeks gestation. All participants underwent cervical elastography at diagnosis. We compared cervical elastography parameters between women who delivered spontaneously preterm (<37 weeks) and those who delivered at full term and assessed the ability of these parameters to predict spontaneous preterm delivery. Results: Among the 107 enrolled individuals with threatened PTL and a cervical length of ≥15 mm, 55 (42%) experienced preterm birth (<37 weeks). Internal os stiffness (IOS), internal-to-external os stiffness ratio (IOS/EOS ratio), and elasticity contrast index (ECI) were significantly associated with a risk of preterm birth compared to full-term birth. The IOS/EOS ratio was associated with 10-fold higher odds of preterm birth at < 37 weeks (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.82–59.98), and ECI was associated with 1.5-fold higher odds (95% CI, 1.01–2.37). The IOS/EOS ratio demonstrated good predictive value (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.678) and the combination of CL ≤ 25 mm and the IOS/EOS ratio had good diagnostic performance for predicting preterm birth (AUC = 0.708). Conclusions: Cervical elastography using the E-Cervix™ system appears to improve the ability to predict preterm birth in pregnant women with threatened PTL and a cervical length greater than 15 mm. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of miscible gas injection (MGI) strategies for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in high-salinity reservoirs, with a focus on the Raleigh Oil Field. Using a calibrated Equation of State (EOS) model in CMG WinProp™, eight gas injection scenarios were simulated to assess phase behavior, miscibility, and swelling factors. The results indicate that carbon dioxide (CO2) and enriched separator gas offer the most technically and economically viable options, with CO2 demonstrating superior swelling performance and lower miscibility pressure requirements. The findings underscore the potential of CO2-EOR as a sustainable and effective recovery method in pressure-depleted, high-salinity environments. Full article

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system that significantly impairs postural control and functional abilities. Robotic-assisted gait training mitigates this functional deterioration. This preliminary study aims to investigate the effects of a four-week gait training with the ExoAtlet II exoskeleton on static balance control and functional mobility in five individuals with MS (Expanded Disability Status Scale ≤ 2.5). Before and after the training, they were assessed in quiet standing under Eyes Open (EO) and Eyes Closed (EC) conditions and with the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Center of Pressure (CoP) Sway Area, Antero–Posterior (AP) and Medio–Lateral (ML) CoP displacement, Stay Time, and Total Instability Duration were computed. TUG test Total Duration, sit-to-stand, stand-to-sit, and linear walking phase duration were analyzed. To establish target reference values for rehabilitation advancement, the same evaluations were performed on a matched healthy cohort. After the training, an improvement in static balance with EO was observed towards HS values (reduced Sway Area, AP and ML CoP displacement, and Total Instability Duration and increased Stay Time). Enhancements under EC condition were less marked. TUG test performance improved, particularly in the stand-to-sit phase. These preliminary findings suggest functional benefits of exoskeleton gait training for individuals with MS. Full article

High-quality end-of-life care (EoLC) is a critical yet often underemphasised component of oncology care. Several shortcomings in the delivery of EoLC for oncology patients in our centre during the COVID-19 pandemic were identified in our initial 2021 audit. In 2022, we introduced a care of dying patients proforma, an EoLC quality checklist, targeted education and training for staff, and an expanded end-of-life (EoL) committee. This re-audit aimed to review how these changes impacted on the care received by patients in a tertiary cancer centre. A second retrospective re-audit of patients who died between 11 July 2022 and 30 April 2023 was performed to assess quality of EoLC using the Oxford Quality indicators. A total of 72 deaths occurred over the audit period. Quality of EoLC improved significantly when compared to the initial audit (χ2 (3, n = 138) = 9.75, p = 0.021). Exploration of patients’ wishes was documented in 48.8% and referral to pastoral care was documented in 68.3%, from 24.2% and 10.6%, respectively. The proportion of patients receiving poor EoLC reduced from 21.2% to 8.3%. Our study demonstrates the benefits of simple interventions, the importance of re-audit, and the role of ongoing interdisciplinary commitment to improving EoLC for our patients. Full article

The electrooxidation (EO) of three important environmental contaminants, anticorrosive 1H-benzotriazole (BTA), plasticizer dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and non-ionic surfactant Triton X-100 (tert-octylphenoxy[poly(ethoxy)] ethanol, t-OPPE), was studied as a possible means to improve their elimination from wastewaters, which are an important emission source. EO was performed in a batch reactor with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode and a stainless steel cathode. Different supporting electrolytes were tested: NaCl, H2SO4, and Na2SO4. Results were analysed from the point of their efficacy in terms of degradation rate, kinetics, energy consumption, and transformation products. The highest degradation rate, shortest half-life, and lowest energy consumption was observed in the electrolyte H2SO4, followed by Na2SO4 with only slightly less favourable characteristics. In both cases, degradation was probably due to the formation of persulphate or sulphate radicals. Transformation products (TPs) were studied mainly in the sulphate media and several oxidation products were identified with all three contaminants, while some evidence of progressive degradation, e.g., ring-opening products, was observed only with t-OPPE. The possible reasons for the lack of further degradation in BTA and DBP are too short of an EO treatment time and perhaps a lack of detection due to unsuitable analytical methods for more polar TPs. Results demonstrate that BDD-based EO is a robust method for the efficient removal of structurally diverse organic contaminants, making it a promising candidate for advanced water treatment technologies. In the present work, the antimicrobial efficacy of Thymus vulgaris essential oil (EO) was investigated on Alternaria alternata strain BNR; a paper biodeteriogen was used as a model for a contaminated library. The influence of EO volume and diffusion modality, treatment duration, and inoculum age was evaluated in the vapor phase. In Petri dish screening, the influence of different EO volumes (5, 7.5, and 10 μL) on the microbial growth lag phase was investigated, and the growth inhibition period was established. The most effective treatment (10 μL EO) was then scaled up in a glass airtight container of 2650 cm3; a cold diffusion method was applied in order to quickly reach the maximum concentration of active compounds in the vapor phase. These tests demonstrated that EO efficacy is affected by the inoculum age and the contact time, and that the treatment should be performed as early as is feasible. A mycostatic effect was confirmed to be proportional to the utilized EO volume and independent from the treatment method. The information obtained in the present work will be applied to the set-up of an EO treatment in a library characterized by different levels of air contamination. Full article

This study addresses fairness in machine learning for student academic performance prediction using the UCI Student Performance dataset. We comparatively evaluate logistic regression, Random Forest, and XGBoost, integrating the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) to address class imbalance and 5-fold cross-validation for robust model training. A comprehensive fairness analysis is conducted, considering sensitive attributes such as gender, school type, and socioeconomic factors, including parental education (Medu and Fedu), cohabitation status (Pstatus), and family size (famsize). Using the AIF360 library, we compute the demographic parity difference (DP) and Equalized Odds Difference (EO) to assess model biases across diverse subgroups. Our results demonstrate that XGBoost achieves high predictive performance (accuracy: 0.789; F1 score: 0.803) while maintaining low bias for socioeconomic attributes, offering a balanced approach to fairness and performance. A sensitivity analysis of bias mitigation strategies further enhances the study, advancing equitable artificial intelligence in education by incorporating socially relevant factors. Full article

For the first time, essential oils (EOs) from the leaves and flowers of Lantana camara L., grown in Loja, Ecuador, have been isolated by steam distillation and analyzed. The oil yields from the extractions were 0.021 and 0.005% for the leaves and flowers, respectively. A compositional analysis using gas chromatography revealed the presence of EOs, comprising approximately 97.98% of the extract from the leaves and 74.58% of the extract from the flowers. The chemical characterization of these EOs indicated sesquiterpenic profiles. The most representative constituents of the essential oils from the flowers were γ-Curcumene (21.79%), (E, E)-α-Farnesene (20.07%), and α-Zingiberene (13.38%), while the EOs from the leaves were characterized by the abundant presence of γ-Curcumene (21.87%), (E)-Nerolidol (15.09%), and cis-Muurola-4(14),5-diene (12.65%). Furthermore, the acaricidal efficacy of the EOs from the leaves of L. camara was tested by a dip test with adult ticks, resulting in acaricidal efficacy at concentrations of 10%, demonstrating the useful properties of these EOs. Background: Sustainability in supply chain management (SCM) practices is becoming increasingly important as environmental responsibility and social concerns, as well as enterprises’ competitiveness in terms of innovation, risk, and economic performance, become increasingly urgent. This paper aims to identify and prioritize concepts for implementing sustainable supply chains, drawing on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and green supply chain management (GSCM) techniques. Corporate supply chain managers across various industries, markets, and supply chain segments brainstormed management practices to enhance the sustainability of their supply chains. Four industry sectors were surveyed across five different value chain segments. Methods: A group concept mapping (GCM) approach incorporating multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was used. A hierarchy of practices is proposed, and hypotheses are developed about achievability and impact. Results: A decision-making matrix prioritizes eight solution concepts based on two axes: impact (I) and ease of implementation (EoI). Conclusions: Eight concepts are prioritized based on the optimal effectiveness of implementing the solutions. Pattern matching reveals differences between emerging and developed markets, as well as supply chain segments, that decision-makers should be aware of. By analyzing supply chains from a multi-part perspective, this research goes beyond empirical studies based on a single industry, geographic region, or example case. Full article

Background: Spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1) is a severe neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, including the muscles of the oral cavity and esophagus. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), a chronic, allergic disease, presents with eosinophilic infiltration of the esophagus, leading to esophageal dysmotility. Feeding difficulties may occur in both conditions. So far, the coexistence of EoE and SMA1 has not been described; we present the first such case. Case presentation: The patient was a girl with SMA1 diagnosed shortly after birth, treated with nusinersen and onasemnogene abeparvovec, and fed a standard industrial diet through a gastrostomy. In her second year of life, she developed increasing symptoms: distress during feeding, regurgitation, vomiting, and weight loss. She was treated with proton pump inhibitors without clinical improvement. Gastroscopy was performed, revealing superficial epithelial damage with bleeding in the proximal esophagus. Histopathology showed chronic inflammation with up to 150 eosinophils per high-power field, microabscesses, spongiosis, and basal layer hypertrophy. The girl was diagnosed with EoE. Her diet was switched from a standard industrial formula to an amino acid-based formula, which led to marked clinical improvement, the resolution of symptoms, and appropriate weight gain. Conclusions: This case report highlights the challenges of diagnosing EoE in SMA1 patients and emphasizes the need for multidisciplinary approaches and further investigation of allergic manifestations in SMA1 patients.
