Interfacial solar evaporation has emerged as a promising strategy for freshwater production, where 3D evaporators offer distinct advantages in heat management and salt rejection. Freeze–thaw cycling is a widely adopted fabrication method for 3D hydrogel evaporators, yet the impact of preparation conditions (e.g., freezing temperature) on their evaporation performance remains poorly understood, hindering rational optimization of fabrication protocols. Herein, we report the fabrication of chitosan-based hydrogel evaporators via freeze–thaw cycles at different freezing temperatures (−20 °C, −40 °C, and −80 °C), leveraging its low cost and environmental friendliness. Characterizations of crosslinking density and microstructure reveal a direct correlation between freezing temperature and network porosity, which significantly influences evaporation rate, photothermal conversion efficiency, and anti-salt performance. It is noteworthy that the chitosan hydrogel prepared at −80 °C demonstrates an excellent evaporation rate in high-salinity environments and exhibits superior salt resistance during continuous evaporation testing. Long-term cyclic experiments indicate that there was an average evaporation rate of 3.76 kg m−2 h−1 over 10 cycles, with only a 2.5% decrease observed in the 10th cycle. This work not only elucidates the structure–property relationship of freeze–thaw fabricated hydrogels but also provides a strategic guideline for tailoring evaporator architectures to different salinity conditions, bridging the gap between material design and practical seawater desalination. Background: Infectious proctitis remains an underrecognized entity, although sexually transmitted diseases, especially bacterial infections, exhibit a marked increase in their incidence. Methods: Here, we report a case of a 44-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with lower abdominal and rectal pain, tenesmus, fever and night sweats for the past 6 days. Results: The computed tomography initially revealed a high suspicion of metastatic rectal cancer. The endoscopic findings showed a 5 cm rectal mass, suggestive of malignancy. The histologic examination showed, however, no signs of malignancy and lacked the classical features of an inflammatory bowel disease, so an infectious proctitis was further suspected. The patient reported to have had unprotected receptive anal intercourse, was tested positive for Treponema pallidum serology and received three doses of intramuscular benzathine penicillin G. A control rectosigmoidoscopy, imaging at 3 months and histological evaluation after antibiotic treatment showed a complete resolution of inflammation. Conclusions: Syphilitic proctitis may mimic various conditions such as rectal cancer or inflammatory bowel disease and requires a high degree of suspicion. Clinicians need to be aware of infectious proctitis in high-risk populations, while an appropriate thorough medical history may guide the initial diagnostic steps. Full article

Background: Rapid loss of residual kidney function (RKF) is associated with unfavorable outcomes. We conducted an RCT to compare the effects on RKF preservation of incremental HD between once-weekly HD (1-WHD) and twice-weekly HD (2-WHD). Methods: ESKD patients with an eGFR of 5–10 mL/min/1.73 m2 and urine output of ≥800 mL/day were randomly assigned to receive either once-weekly HD (1-WHD) or twice-weekly HD (2-WHD) for 12 months. Patients in the 1-WHD group were prescribed once-weekly HD combined with low-protein diet (0.6 g/kg/day) supplemented with keto-analogues (KAs) 0.12 g/kg/day. In the 2-WHD group, patients received twice-weekly HD with a regular-protein diet. Primary outcomes were changes in RKF by renal clearance and urine volume. Nutritional status, muscle parameters, and quality of life (QoL) were also assessed. Results: A total of 30 incident HD patients were randomized. Baseline RKF, urine volume, and demographic were not different between groups. After 3 months, urine volume was significantly higher in the 1-WHD group than in the 2-WHD group (1921 ± 767 mL/day vs. 1305 ± 599 mL/day, p = 0.02), and these significant findings persisted throughout the entire study period. For RKF, 1-WHD also had a lesser decline in urinary urea (CUrea) and creatinine clearance (CCr) than 2-WHD, with statistically significant differences observed from months 6–12. By month 6, the 1-WHD group exhibited significantly higher CUrea and CCr compared to the 2-WHD group, with CUrea at 3.2 ± 2.3 vs. 1.7 ± 1.0 mL/min (p = 0.03) and CCr at 5.9 ± 3.6 vs. 3.8 ± 1.4 mL/min (p = 0.04), respectively. Serum albumin levels, skeletal muscle mass, anemia status, metabolic parameters, protein-bound uremic toxins, and QoL scores were comparable between the two groups. Conclusions: Incremental HD, starting with once-weekly HD combined with protein restriction supplemented with KAs, appears to better preserve RKF among incident HD patients compared to twice-weekly HD with a regular-protein diet. This HD regimen was also associated with safety in metabolic and nutritional profiles. Full article

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have gained recognition as stable porous organic polymers, for example, for CO2 separation. From the monomer 4,4′-(phenazine-5,10-diyl)dibenzonitrile (pBN), new pBN-CTFs were synthesized using the ionothermal method with a variation in temperature (400 and 550 °C) and the ZnCl2-to-monomer ratio (10 and 20). N2 adsorption yielded BET surface areas up to 1460 m2g−1. The pBN-CTFs are promising CO2 adsorbents and are comparable to other benchmark CTFs such as CTF-1 with a CO2 uptake of pBN-CTF-10-550 at 293 K of up to 54 cm3 g–1 or 96 mg g−1, with a CO2/CH4 IAST selectivity of 22 for a 50% mixture of CO2/CH4. pBN-CTF-10-400 has a very high heat of adsorption of 79 kJ mol–1 for CO2 near zero coverage in comparison to other CTFs, and it also stays well above the liquefaction heat of CO2 due to its high microporosity of 50% of the total pore volume. (1) Background: The number of casualties due to car accidents in Europe is decreasing. However, there are still very large differences in the levels of road safety between countries, even within the European Union. Therefore, it is vital to conduct reliable international analyses to compare the effectiveness of actions taken to prevent road accidents. Information on the number of accidents, injuries, and fatalities can be found in various databases (e.g., Eurostat or OECD). In this paper, it is clearly shown that data on car accidents and the resulting injuries are not comparable between different countries, and any conclusions drawn using these data as their basis will be erroneous. (2) Methods: The indicators of the number of car accidents, injured people, and fatalities in relation to the number of inhabitants were determined, then their distribution and mutual correlations were examined for a group of selected European countries. (3) Results: There is no correlation between the indicators of the number of car accidents and injuries and the indicator of fatalities. An assessment of road safety based on these indicators would result in inconsistent and ambiguous conclusions. (4) Conclusions: It has been empirically shown that data on the number of car accidents and injured people from different countries are not comparable. These conclusions were verified by providing examples of the definitions of an injured person used in different countries. This paper clearly indicates that any international comparisons can only be made based on data regarding the number of road accident fatalities. Full article

A Multi-Center Prospective Study on Post-Vaccination Humoral Response to SARS-CoV-2 in Polish Long-Term Care Facility Residents: Associations with COVID-19 Clinical Course and Comorbidities

Background: Vaccination effectively reduces the risk of infection, including COVID-19 yet older adults often receive insufficient attention despite their increased vulnerability. The study aimed to correlate serological results with underlying conditions, vaccination status, and COVID-19 history. Methods: This non-interventional, multicenter study aimed to assess vaccination coverage and SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels among residents of eight long-term care facilities (LTCFs) in Southern Poland. Data collection took place between January and June 2022, with 429 participants recruited based on their ability to provide informed consent and their residency in LTCFs. Sociodemographic data, medical history, and COVID-19-related information—including infection history and vaccination status—were collected through surveys. Blood samples were obtained for serological testing using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to detect anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies. Statistical analysis, including Spearman’s correlation, revealed significant associations between antibody levels and vaccination status, as well as between RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 infections and higher antibody titers. Results: Among the seven different qualitative serological, only the Anti-SARS-CoV-2 NCP (IgG) and Anti-SARS-CoV-2 (IgA) tests showed a positive correlation with the Anti-SARS-CoV-2 QuantiVac (IgG) test, which was used as a comparator. A weak correlation was noted with the age of the residents. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that vaccination positively influences antibody responses, underscoring the importance of immunization among LTCF residents. Additionally, certain comorbidities – such as degenerative joint disease and diabetes – showed weak correlations with higher antibody levels. This study provides valuable insights into the humoral immune response to COVID-19 in vulnerable populations residing in LTCFs. Full article

Background/Objectives: Environmental stressors, including spaceflight and altered gravity, can negatively affect the symbiotic relationship between the gut microbiome and host health. Dietary prebiotics, which alter components of the gut microbiome, show promise as an effective way to mitigate the negative impacts of stressor exposure. It remains unknown, however, if the stress-protective effects of consuming dietary prebiotics will extend to chronic altered-gravity exposure. Methods: Forty female C57BL/6 mice consumed either a control diet or a prebiotic diet containing galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and polydextrose (PDX) for 4 weeks, after which half of the mice were exposed to 3 times the gravitational force of Earth (3g) for an additional 4 weeks. Fecal microbiome samples were collected weekly for 8 weeks, sequenced, and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Terminal physiological endpoints, including immune and red blood cell characteristics, were collected at the end of the study. Results: The results demonstrate that dietary prebiotic consumption altered the gut microbial community structure through changes to β-diversity and multiple genera across time. In addition, consuming dietary prebiotics reduced the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and increased red blood cell distribution width (RDW-CV). Importantly, the prebiotic diet prevented the impacts of altered-gravity on β-diversity and the bloom of problematic genera, such as Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 and Turicibacter. Furthermore, several prebiotic diet-induced genera-level changes were significantly associated with several host physiological changes induced by 3g exposure. Conclusions: These data demonstrate that the stress-protective potential of consuming dietary prebiotics extends to environmental stressors such as altered gravity, and, potentially, spaceflight. Background: Chryseobacterium indologenes, an environmental bacterium, is increasingly recognized as an emerging nosocomial pathogen, particularly in Asia, and is often characterized by multidrug resistance. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the genomic features of clinical C. indologenes isolates from Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, Thailand, to understand their mechanisms of multidrug resistance, virulence factors, and mobile genetic elements (MGEs). Methods: Twelve C. indologenes isolates were identified, and their antibiotic susceptibility profiles were determined. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) was performed using a hybrid approach combining Illumina short-reads and Oxford Nanopore long-reads to generate complete bacterial genomes. The hybrid assembled genomes were subsequently analyzed to detect antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, virulence factors, and MGEs. Results: C. indologenes isolates were primarily recovered from urine samples of hospitalized elderly male patients with underlying conditions. These isolates generally exhibited extensive drug resistance, which was subsequently explored and correlated with genomic determinants. With one exception, CMCI13 showed a lower resistance profile (Multidrug resistance, MDR). Genomic analysis revealed isolates with genome sizes of 4.83–5.00 Mb and GC content of 37.15–37.35%. Genomic characterization identified conserved resistance genes (blaIND-2, blaCIA-4, adeF, vanT, and qacG) and various virulence factors. Phylogenetic and pangenome analysis showed 11 isolates clustering closely with Chinese strain 3125, while one isolate (CMCI13) formed a distinct branch. Importantly, each isolate, except CMCI13, harbored a large genomic island (approximately 94–100 kb) carrying significant resistance genes (blaOXA-347, tetX, aadS, and ermF). The absence of this genomic island in CMCI13 correlated with its less resistant phenotype. No plasmids, integrons, or CRISPR-Cas systems were detected in any isolate. Conclusions: This study highlights the alarming emergence of multidrug-resistant C. indologenes in a hospital setting in Thailand. The genomic insights into specific resistance mechanisms, virulence factors, and potential horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events, particularly the association of a large genomic island with the XDR phenotype, underscore the critical need for continuous genomic surveillance to monitor transmission patterns and develop effective treatment strategies for this emerging pathogen. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between serum ferritin levels and functional impairment in children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In addition, we investigated whether this relationship remained significant after controlling for core symptom severity and examined the correlations between ferritin levels and ADHD symptom levels. Methods: The sample included 88 children aged 6–13 years: 44 diagnosed with ADHD and 44 healthy controls (HCs) matched for age and sex. ADHD symptom severity was assessed using Turgay’s DSM-IV-Based ADHD and Disruptive Behavior Disorders Screening Scale (T-DSM-IV-S; parent-report) and the Clinical Global Impression—Severity (CGI-S) scale (clinician-rated). Functional impairment was measured using the Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale—Parent Report (WFIRS-P). Serum ferritin levels were determined through venous blood samples. Statistical analyses included group comparisons, Spearman correlations, and partial correlations controlling for symptom severity. Results: Children with ADHD had significantly lower serum ferritin levels and higher levels of both symptom severity and functional impairment compared to HCs. Ferritin levels were negatively correlated with ADHD symptom severity and with functional impairment in the Life Skills domain. However, after controlling for ADHD symptom severity, the association with Life Skills was no longer statistically significant. Conclusions: Ferritin levels were found to be associated with both ADHD symptom severity and functional impairment in the Life Skills domain. However, this relationship was not independent of symptom severity, suggesting that core ADHD symptoms may mediate the impact of iron status on daily functioning. Due to the study’s limitations (e.g., cross-sectional design, small sample size, gender imbalance, and lack of inflammatory and dietary data), our findings should be interpreted with caution, as they do not establish causality or resolve the ongoing inconsistencies in the literature. These results underscore the relevance of iron metabolism in the clinical presentation of ADHD and highlight the need for future research to determine whether improving iron status could serve as an adjunctive strategy in the management of functional impairments in this population. The goal of this study is to develop an efficient machine learning framework for designing high-hardness multi-metal nitride coatings, overcoming the limitations of traditional trial-and-error methods. The development of multicomponent metal nitride hard coatings via multi-arc ion plating remains a significant challenge due to the vast compositional search space. Although theoretical studies in macroscopic, mesoscopic, and microscopic domains exist, these often focus on idealized models and lack effective coupling across scales, leading to time-consuming and labor-intensive traditional methods. With advancements in materials genomics and data mining, machine learning has become a powerful tool in material discovery. In this work, we construct a compositional search space for multicomponent nitrides based on electronic configuration, valence electron count, electronegativity, and oxidation states of metal elements in unary nitrides. The search space is further constrained by FCC crystal structure and hardness theory. By incorporating a feature library with micro-, meso-, and macro-structural characteristics and using clustering analysis with theoretical intermediate variables, the model enriches dataset information and enhances predictive accuracy by reducing experimental errors. This model is successfully applied to design multicomponent metal nitride coatings using a literature-derived database of 233 entries. Experimental validation confirms the model’s predictions, and clustering is used to minimize experimental and data errors, yielding a strong agreement between predicted optimal molar ratios of metal elements and nitrogen and measured hardness performance. Of the 100 Vickers hardness (HV) predictions made by the model using input features like molar ratios of metal elements (e.g., Ti, Al, Cr, Zr) and atomic size mismatch, 82 exceeded the dataset’s maximum hardness, with the best sample achieving a prediction accuracy of 91.6% validated against experimental measurements. This approach offers a robust strategy for designing high-performance coatings with optimized hardness. Full article

The coherency matrix serves as a valuable tool for explaining the intricate details of various terrain targets. However, a significant challenge arises when analyzing ground targets with similar scattering characteristics in polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) target decomposition. Specifically, the overestimation of volume scattering (OVS) introduces ambiguity in characterizing the scattering mechanism and uncertainty in deciphering the scattering mechanism of large oriented built-up areas. To address these challenges, based on the generalized five-component decomposition (G5U), we propose a hierarchical extension of the G5U method, termed ExG5U, which incorporates orientation and phase angles into the matrix rotation process. The resulting transformed coherency matrices are then subjected to a five-component decomposition framework, enhanced with four refined volume scattering models. Additionally, we have reformulated the branch conditions to facilitate more precise interpretations of scattering mechanisms. To validate the efficacy of the proposed method, we have conducted comprehensive evaluations using diverse PolSAR datasets from Gaofen-3, Radarsat-2, and ESAR, covering varying data acquisition timelines, sites, and frequency bands. The findings indicate that the ExG5U method proficiently captures the scattering characteristics of ambiguous regions and shows promising potential in mitigating OVS, ultimately facilitating a more accurate portrayal of scattering mechanisms of various terrain types. Use of Volatile Organic Compounds Produced by Bacillus Bacteria for the Biological Control of Fusarium oxysporum

Restricting the use of chemical pesticides in forestry requires the search for alternative solutions. These could be volatile organic compounds produced by three investigated species of bacteria (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (ex Fukumoto) Priest, B. subtilis (Ehrenberg) Cohn and B. thuringiensis Berliner), which inhibit the growth of the pathogen F. oxysporum Schltdl. emend. Snyder & Hansen in forest nurseries. The highest inhibition of fungal growth (70%) was observed with B. amyloliquefaciens after 24 h of antagonism test, which had a higher content of carbonyl compounds (46.83 ± 8.41%) than B. subtilis (41.50 ± 6.45%) or B. thuringiensis (34.62 ± 4.77%). Only in the volatile emissions of B. amyloliquefaciens were 3-hydroxybutan-2-one, undecan-2-one, dodecan-5-one and tetradecan-5-one found. In contrast, the main components of the volatile emissions of F. oxysporum were chlorinated derivatives of benzaldehyde (e.g., 3,5-dichloro-4-methoxybenzaldehyde) and chlorinated derivatives of benzene (e.g., 1,4-dichloro-2,5-dimethoxybenzene), as well as carbonyl compounds (e.g., benzaldehyde) and alcohols (e.g., benzyl alcohol). Further compounds were found in the interactions between B. amyloliquefaciens and F. oxysporum (e.g., α-cubebene, linalool, undecan-2-ol, decan-2-one and 2,6-dichloroanisole). Specific substances were found for B. amyloliquefaciens (limonene, nonan-2-ol, phenethyl alcohol, heptan-2-one and tridecan-2-one) and for F. oxysporum (propan-1-ol, propan-2-ol, heptan-2-one and tridecan-2-one). The amounts of volatile chemical compounds found in B. amyloliquefaciens or in the bacterium–fungus interaction can be used for further research to limit the pathogenic fungus. In the future, one should focus on the compounds that were found exclusively in interactions and whose content was higher than in isolated bacteria. In order to conquer an ecological niche, bacteria increase the production of secondary metabolites, including specific chemical compounds. The results presented are a prerequisite for creating an alternative solution or supplementing the currently used methods of plant protection against F. oxysporum. Understanding and applying the volatile organic compounds produced by bacteria can complement chemical plant protection against the pathogen, especially in greenhouses or tunnels where plants grow in conditions that favour fungal growth. Heterogeneous remote sensing images, acquired from different sensors, exhibit significant variations in data structure, resolution, and radiometric characteristics. These inherent heterogeneities present substantial challenges for change detection, a task that involves identifying changes in a target area by analyzing multi-temporal images. To address this issue, we propose the Multi-Head Graph Attention Mechanism (MHGAN), designed to achieve accurate detection of surface changes in heterogeneous remote sensing images. The MHGAN employs a bidirectional adversarial convolutional autoencoder network to reconstruct and perform style transformation of heterogeneous images. Unlike existing unidirectional translation frameworks (e.g., CycleGAN), our approach simultaneously aligns features in both domains through multi-head graph attention and dynamic kernel width estimation, effectively reducing false changes caused by sensor heterogeneity. The network training is constrained by four loss functions: reconstruction loss, code correlation loss, graph attention loss, and adversarial loss, which together guide the alignment of heterogeneous images into a unified data domain. The code correlation loss enforces consistency in feature representations at the encoding layer, while a density-based kernel width estimation method enhances the capture of both local and global changes. The graph attention loss models the relationships between features and images, improving the representation of consistent regions across bitemporal images. Additionally, adversarial loss promotes style consistency within the shared domain. Our bidirectional adversarial convolutional autoencoder simultaneously aligns features across both domains. This bilateral structure mitigates the information loss associated with one-way mappings, enabling more accurate style transformation and reducing false change detections caused by sensor heterogeneity, which represents a key advantage over existing unidirectional methods. Compared with state-of-the-art methods for heterogeneous change detection, the MHGAN demonstrates superior performance in both qualitative and quantitative evaluations across four benchmark heterogeneous remote sensing datasets. In this study, the ultrasonic-assisted extraction of deep eutectic solvents (UADES) for tea polysaccharides was optimized, and their physicochemical properties and antioxidant activities were analyzed. The optimal DES comprised choline chloride (CC) and ethylene glycol (EG) in a molar ratio of 1:3, with a water content of 40%. The optimized condition was an extraction temperature of 61 °C, an ultrasonic power of 480 W, and an extraction time of 60 min. The UADES extraction rate of polysaccharides (ERP) was 15.89 ± 0.13%, significantly exceeding that of hot water (HW) extraction. The polysaccharide content in the UADES-extracted tea polysaccharides (UADESTPs) was comparable to that of hot-water-extracted tea polysaccharides (HWTPs) (75.47 ± 1.35% vs. 74.08 ± 2.51%); the UADESTPs contained more uronic acid (8.35 ± 0.26%) and less protein (12.91%) than HWTP. Most of the UADESTPs (88.87%) had molecular weights (Mw) below 1.80 × 103 Da. The UADESTPs contained trehalose, glucuronic acid, galactose, xylose, and glucose, with molar ratios of 8:16:1:10. The free radical scavenging rate and total reducing power of the UADESTPs were markedly superior to those of the HWTPs. Moreover, the UADESTPs had a better alleviating effect on H2O2-induced oxidative injury in HepG2 cells. This study develops an eco-friendly and efficient extraction method for tea polysaccharides, offering new insights for the development of tea polysaccharides. Full article

Marine biofouling significantly impacts the performance and longevity of polymer-based marine structures, particularly those designed for hydrodynamic applications such as Vortex-Induced Vibration suppression systems. Traditional antifouling solutions rely on copper-based multilayer coatings, which present challenges including mechanical vulnerability (e.g., chipping and scratching), high material and labor demands, and environmental concerns such as volatile organic compound emissions and copper leaching. Recent developments in material science have introduced an alternative system involving the direct incorporation of copper oxide (Cu2O) into high-density polyethylene (HDPE) during the molding process. This study conducts a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of two antifouling integration methods—System 1 (traditional coating-based) and System 2 (Cu2O-impregnated HDPE)—evaluating their environmental impact across production, application, use, and end-of-life stages. The functional unit used for this study was 1 square meter for a time period of five years. Using ISO 14040-compliant methodology and data from Ecoinvent and OpenLCA, three impact categories were assessed: global warming potential (GWP), cumulative energy demand (CED), and marine aquatic ecotoxicity Potential (MAETP). The results indicate that System 2 outperforms System 1 in GWP (4.42 vs. 5.65 kg CO2-eq), CED (75.3 vs. 91.0 MJ-eq), and MAETP (327,002 vs. 469,929 kg 1,4-DCB-eq) per functional unit over a five-year lifespan, indicating a 21.8%, 17.3%, and 30.4% reduction in the key impact factors, respectively. These results suggest that direct Cu2O incorporation offers a more environmentally sustainable and mechanically resilient antifouling strategy, supporting the potential of embedded antifouling systems to shift industry practices toward more sustainable marine infrastructure.
