Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hydrology and hydrogeology are critical to understanding and managing water resources and for mitigating water-related natural disasters. The integration of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies has revolutionized these fields, providing powerful tools for data collection, analysis, and visualization. This Special Issue aims to highlight the latest advancements and applications of GISs and RS in hydrology and hydrogeology, showcasing how these technologies can provide greater insights into water systems and improve disaster management.

Hydrological and hydrogeological studies often incorporate complex spatial and temporal data, making traditional field-based methods time-consuming and resource-intensive. The advent of GISs and RS has provided researchers and practitioners with the ability to collect, process, and analyze large volumes of spatial data efficiently. These technologies enable the monitoring of hydrological processes, the assessment of water resources, and the prediction of hydrological hazards with greater accuracy and timeliness.

This Special Issue seeks to compile cutting-edge research that demonstrates the innovative applications of GISs and RS in hydrology and hydrogeology. We hope to cover a variety of topics, including (but not limited to) the following:

  1. Hydrological Modeling and Simulation:
    • The development and validation of hydrological models using GISs and RS data.
    • The integration of RS data for improved hydrological simulations and predictions.
  2. Water Resource Management:
    • The assessment and mapping of water resources using RS techniques.
    • GIS-based decision support systems for sustainable water resource management.
  3. Flood and Drought Monitoring:
    • Real-time flood mapping and monitoring using satellite imagery and GIS.
    • Drought assessment and early warning systems based on RS data.
  4. Sediment Source Identification:
    • The identification and quantification of sediment sources in watersheds using multi-source RS data.
    • Monitoring the evolution of sediment sources and their impact on hydrological processes.
  5. Climate Change Impact Analysis:
    • Assessing the impacts of climate change on hydrological cycles using long-term RS datasets.
    • GIS-based vulnerability assessments of water resources to climate change.
  6. Disaster Risk Reduction:
    • The development of early warning systems for hydrological disasters using integrated GIS and RS approaches.
    • Post-disaster assessments and recovery planning with GIS and RS technologies.

We invite researchers, practitioners, and scholars to submit original research articles, review papers, and case studies that highlight the applications of GIS and RS in hydrology and hydrogeology. Submissions should provide clear evidence of the use of these technologies to address specific challenges in the field, demonstrate innovative methodologies, and present significant findings that advance the state of the art.
