Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is our pleasure to announce The Surface Engineering for Biomedical Applications (SEBA) Workshop (http://www.seba-bg.com). It is an international scientific event organized by the Institute of Electronics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Medical University of Pleven and the Technical University of Gabrovo. The workshop addresses the critical challenges in modifying and enhancing the surface properties of biomaterials and medical devices to improve their performance in biological environments. These challenges include improving biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, antibacterial effectiveness, and osseointegration, among other essential factors. The main goal of SEBA is to bring together young scientists, distinguished researchers, and international experts working at the intersection of surface engineering and biomedicine. By facilitating scientific exchange and collaboration, the workshop aims to advance state-of-the-art surface modification techniques for biomedical applications and foster innovation across disciplines. Renowned invited speakers will present on key topics relevant to modern biomedical engineering. The workshop will cover both fundamental research and applied technologies, with discussions on the fundamental applications of bioengineering in medicine, novel materials and their biomedical applications, modern engineering technologies in clinical and medical practice, surface modification strategies for new-generation biomaterials, and deposition techniques for thin films and functional coatings in biomedical devices. The SEBA Workshop aims to establish itself as a regular international forum for productive discussions, collaboration, and knowledge transfer in the rapidly evolving field of biomedical surface engineering.

This Special Issue aims to publish selected papers presented at the workshop. It covers (but is not limited to) the following topics:

  • Bioengineering and fundamental applications;
  • New materials and techniques for biomedical applications;
  • Application of modern engineering technologies in medicine;
  • Surface modification of novel biomaterials;
  • Advanced thin films and coatings for biomedical applications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Surfaces is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • Reprint: MDPI Books provides the opportunity to republish successful Special Issues in book format, both online and in print.
