Special Issue Information
This special issue will include a focus on surface related processes in regard to the recent progress and discoveries. The adsorption process is a commonly observed phenomenon in many fields and is an initial, inevitable, and critical stage leading to reaction and dynamics. Therefore, the learnings in this field of study can go beyond the traditionally focused areas to cultivate new hints for resolving challenging problems. For example, as observed in the current COVID-19 outbreak, the replication process starts with attachment of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) to the host cell through interactions between the spike (S) protein and the surface of its specific receptor protein (human ACE-2). A characterization of the surfaces of both S protein and hACE2 can reveal effective drug targeting sites. This example clearly demonstrates that the study of the surface adsorption process is both timely and urgent. The study possesses enormous potential to provide direction and inspiration to various fields.
The article solicits, but is not limited to, the following contents:
- theoretical and experimental methods of characterizing or modification of the surfaces
- description of interactions over the surface and the mechanism of the adsorption
- kinetics and dynamics of the surface adsorption process
- surface adsorption process in biomedical, food science, environmental science or engineering field
- surface adsorption process over various types of surfaces including porous materials and membranes

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Surfaces is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
