Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Recent developments in smart sensor technology have strongly facilitated the long-cherished vision to create a smarter society for the benefit of mankind. In the last decade, the world has witnessed exponential expansion and growth in the fields of information technology as well as social governance. Smart cities have thus emerged as a key enabler of development of a smarter society in due course of time. However, to reach the goals behind the required specifications to develop a smart city, novel sensors-enabled and intelligent network-based technology must be incorporated. Fortunately, the amalgamation of Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain can be seen as a possible way forward to develop the smart city concept into the reality through a stringent provisioning of decentralization, transparency, autonomy, and immutability. Successful conglomerations between IoT and blockchain have already started to show promising footprints to achieve this perspective. However, lack of knowledge and awareness about an appropriate juxtaposition of advanced technologies and design stacks have cornered researchers into a dilemma.

Thus, this Special Issue seeks good-quality original articles that aim to support the development process of smart city using smart sensors in better way, under the IoT and blockchain paradigm by solving (but not being limited to) the following key topics:

  • Novel development of smart contacts in blockchain-IoT ecosystem for smart city;
  • Development of blockchain-IoT enabled sensor networks for smart city;
  • Provisioning of sensor enabled blockchain-IoT architecture for smart city governance;
  • Deployment of IoT-based sensor-data management in smart cities;
  • IoT-blockchain based management and harvesting of smart energy for smart cities;
  • Integration of machine learning and deep learning algorithms for blockchain-driven IoT-sensor-enabled smart cities;
  • Development of fog/edge/cloud/dew computing-based techniques catering to sensor-based IoT and blockchain ecosphere for smart cities;
  • Leveraging prototypes or deployments in sensor-enabled smart healthcare services for smart citizens in a blockchain-driven IoT ecosystem;
  • Use of low power wide area networks (LPWE) for deployment of smart contracts for smart sensor-based environment monitoring and control in smart cities in an IoT–blockchain scenario;
  • Smart e-governance facilitation for leveraging citizen centric services, business applications, and social issues using blockchain and IoT-based sensor systems;
  • Provisioning of 5G and Next Generation Internet (NGI) in the IoT–blockchain-assisted smart city;
  • Monitoring of traffic, accidents, and disasters using sensors-enabled IoT–blockchain in smart cities;
  • Implementation of tactile internet, internet of skills, and pervasive biomedical informatics for the betterment of smart citizens using sensors, IoT, and blockchain;
  • Design of novel consensus algorithms, mathematical models, decentralized frameworks, and sensor-enabled platforms for smart cities;
  • Development of novel cryptocurrencies for IoT–blockchain-enabled citizen-centric support using pervasive sensor systems.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
