Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Currently, polymer science and technology in Romania are marked by advanced research in areas such as polymer synthesis, polymers nanocomposite, materials engineering, and their applications in fields like nanotechnology, biomedicine, and environmental sustainability. It is well known that this field is constantly evolving, and it mainly focuses on the development of innovative materials based on polymers for applications in various fields such as biomedical use and environmental remediation. Romanian researchers are actively involved in developing innovative polymer-based materials with enhanced properties, such as high strength, flexibility, and thermal resistance. These materials could be used in a variety of industries and technologies (like automotive, aerospace, and packaging). Thus, this Special Issue aims to attract valuable contributions from Romanian researchers highlighting the recent advancements in the field of polymer science and technology.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Coaxial sealing systems are increasingly used in the construction of hydraulic cylinders. In addition to the seal that ensures the actual packing of the entire system, the O-ring plays an important role in the functioning of the hydraulic subassembly. In order to understand the sealing phenomenon of coaxial systems, a physical and mathematical model of the contact between the O-ring and its contacting surfaces is required. Within this context, this paper presents a calculation method of the pressures generated in the contact areas of the O-ring with its adjacent surfaces, as well as of the widths of the contact areas. The input quantities for these calculations were certain material characteristics (hardness, elasticity modulus, and Poisson’s coefficient) of the sealed-off fluid pressure and the specific radial deformation, which is a characteristic that describes the mounting of the O-ring in its groove. This article concludes with recommendations for the mounting of the O-ring and the required characteristics of the used materials. Full article

In Romanian ethnopharmacology, Eupatorium cannabinum species is known for its remarkable biological activity. We present an advanced approach to encapsulation using maltodextrin matrices to enhance the stability and efficacy of phytoconstituents and nanoparticles. Two distinct carrier systems were developed: (i) a direct micro-spray encapsulation of E. cannabinum in maltodextrin to produce a maltodextrin-encapsulated carrier (MEC), and (ii) a two-step process involving the preparation of a new phytocarrier system based on gold nanoparticles (EC-AuNPs), followed by micro-spray encapsulation in maltodextrin to create the maltodextrin-encapsulated AuNPs system (MEC-AuNPs system). Comprehensive chemical profiling using GC–MS and ESI–QTOF–MS revealed 80 bioactive molecules, including terpenoids, alkaloids, flavonoids, and phytoecdysteroids. Morpho-structural (XRD, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM) and thermal analyses confirmed the successful integration of NPs within the matrices. EC-AuNPs and MEC-AuNPs exhibited superior antioxidant activity, significant antimicrobial efficacy against major bacterial pathogens (S. aureus, B. subtilis, B. cereus, P. aeruginosa, S. typhi, and E. coli), and enhanced cytotoxicity against MCF-7 and HT-29 cancer cell lines. This study highlights the potential of combining E. cannabinum with AuNPs and maltodextrin encapsulation to develop multifunctional therapeutic systems. The findings underscore the importance of phytoconstituent stabilization and nanotechnology in addressing global antimicrobial resistance and advancing innovative medical applications. Full article
