Therapeutic Potential of Plant-Derived Carbohydrates and Iminosugars

Dear Colleagues,

Rare sugars, iminosugars, and iminosugar acids are very common in plants and we consume them regularly in all plant-containing diets, and yet they remain little studied as they are often hidden by common sugars and amino acids. They appear to be the elusive active components in many healthy foods and medicinal plants. The purpose of this Special Issue is to bring this important group of molecules and their biological activities into focus by gathering manuscripts from key players working on their prophylactic, therapeutic, or cosmetic potential. The first iminosugars were glycosidase inhibitors, which can control blood glucose levels. They can also be much more subtle in their activities by targeting receptors or improving protein folding and stabilization, as can rare sugars. The compounds can be highly specific and potent in their activities. There is no doubt these molecules will be increasingly recognized as being able to prevent and control disorders and be the basis of new pharmaceuticals, standardized food supplements, and cosmetic ingredients. Manuscripts related to any aspect of their biological activity will be considered.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
