Dear Colleagues,
Plants are remarkable reservoirs of chemical diversity, producing a vast array of primary and secondary metabolites that are essential for growth, development, adaptation, and interaction with the environment. These compounds encompass carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, minerals, volatile compounds, phenolic compounds, alkaloids, terpenoids, and many other molecules that contribute to plant physiology and represent valuable resources for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, and industrial applications. The high variability of these compounds among species, genotypes, tissues, and environmental conditions represents an important source of biological and functional diversity.
The growing interest in plant-derived compounds has stimulated significant advances in analytical methodologies and interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding their chemical composition, biological functions, and potential applications. Comprehensive characterization of plant constituents is crucial not only for elucidating plant metabolism and ecological roles but also for supporting the development of innovative products and the sustainable utilization of plant resources.
This Special Issue aims to gather original research articles, reviews, and communications addressing all aspects of plant chemical diversity. Contributions are welcome that investigate the identification, characterization, quantification, extraction, functionality, and application of plant-derived compounds and plant-based products.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Chemical composition of plant materials and plant-derived products;
- Primary and secondary metabolites;
- Polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, and other bioactive compounds;
- Carbohydrates, organic acids, fatty acids, and lipid profiling;
- Mineral composition, inorganic ions, and nutrient characterization;
- Volatile compounds and aroma profiling;
- Phytochemical analysis and metabolomics;
- Advanced analytical methodologies for plant characterization;
- Biological activities and functional properties of plant compounds;
- Quality assessment, authentication, and standardization of plant products;
- Sustainable extraction and processing technologies;
- Valorization of plant resources and agricultural by-products.
By bringing together contributions from phytochemistry, analytical chemistry, plant science, food science, biotechnology, and related disciplines, this Special Issue seeks to provide an updated overview of current advances and future perspectives in the study of plant chemical diversity and its practical applications.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
