Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Plant extracts are being increasingly recognized as valuable sources of natural antioxidants with significant potential for improving human health and food stability. These extracts contain a wide range of bioactive compounds, including polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, and vitamins, which can counteract oxidative stress by neutralizing reactive oxygen species and preventing cellular damage. However, the antioxidant activity of plant extracts is not only determined by their chemical composition but also by the complex mechanisms through which these compounds interact with biological systems and food matrices. This Special Issue aims to explore the mechanisms of antioxidant function in plant extracts, focusing on how their bioactive components exert protective effects at the molecular, cellular, and physiological levels. Topics of interest include antioxidant pathways, synergistic interactions between compounds, bioavailability, metabolism, and their role in preventing oxidative damage related to chronic diseases and food spoilage. For this Special Issue, we welcome original research and reviews that contribute to understanding how plant-derived antioxidants work, how they can be optimized, and how they can be applied in food, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical fields.

Current interest in the use of medicinal plants for the prevention and management of various diseases has increased significantly due to the need to identify effective, safe, and sustainable natural agents. Glechoma hederacea L., a perennial species belonging to the Lamiaceae family, has traditionally been used in European folk medicine for the treatment of respiratory, inflammatory, and digestive disorders. Modern research has highlighted a complex phytochemical profile dominated by phenolic acids, flavonoids, and volatile compounds that have been associated with a variety of biological activities. Experimental studies have reported antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects. The present review summarizes current data regarding the phytochemical composition and biological properties of Glechoma hederacea, with particular emphasis on its potential applications in oral hygiene products and complementary dental therapy.
