Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The impact of climate change on plant life is multifaceted, encompassing alterations in physiology, growth patterns, and reproductive cycles. These alterations are driven by rising temperatures, worsening drought, and elevated CO₂ levels. The consequences of this phenomenon include disruption of the flowering cycle, reduced crop nutritional quality, limitations on nutrient uptake, and facilitation of pest spread. These consequences pose a threat not only to biodiversity but also to food security.

Climate change is increasing the levels of biotic and abiotic stress experienced by plants, which could have a negative impact on global agricultural production. These stress factors interfere with physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes, resulting in reduced crop yields and quality. Consequently, food security is compromised by various interconnected factors. Concerns about addressing these issues have driven the development of nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology offers an innovative and sustainable solution for increasing crop resilience and stress tolerance. Over the past decade, various nanomaterials with unique properties have been developed, demonstrating significant potential for regulating stress response pathways in plants. The use of nanoparticles (NPs) to enhance nutrient uptake, improve photosynthesis, and activate defense mechanisms has been demonstrated in several studies. In addition to enhancing plant resilience, nanomaterials play a crucial role in promoting soil health, enhancing fruit quality, and ensuring the overall sustainability of crops.

The objective of this Special Issue focused on nanotechnology, is to highlight the latest innovations in applications designed to enhance crops. 

This Special Issue aims to serve as a compendium that explains the diverse initiatives currently underway that employ nanotechnology to safeguard global food security in the context of climate change and population growth.

Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
