Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the global significance of zoonotic diseases has become increasingly evident, particularly those emerging from the close human–animal interface. Companion animals—dogs, cats, and other domesticated species sharing human environments—play a unique role in this dynamic, serving both as sentinels and potential reservoirs for a variety of infectious agents.

This Special Issue, titled "Emerging and Neglected Zoonotic Pathogens in Companion Animals," aims to highlight both well-known and underrecognized zoonotic agents with relevance to companion animal health and their potential impact on public health. With changing ecosystems, increased urbanization, antimicrobial resistance, and global mobility, the emergence or re-emergence of zoonotic pathogens in pets is a growing concern that warrants further investigation.

We welcome high-quality submissions addressing all aspects of zoonotic infections in companion animals, including but not limited to the following:

  • Novel or neglected bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens;
  • Pathogenesis and host–pathogen interactions;
  • Epidemiology, surveillance, and molecular diagnostics;
  • Antimicrobial resistance and treatment strategies;
  • Environmental and behavioral risk factors for interspecies transmission.

Both original research articles and review papers are encouraged. Studies combining clinical, microbiological, and molecular approaches, or contributing to the One Health perspective, are particularly welcome.

We look forward to receiving your contributions to advance the understanding and management of zoonotic threats at the companion animal–human interface.

Helicobacter species affect humans and animals, mainly causing gastrointestinal but also extra-gastrointestinal pathologies. Besides Helicobacter pylori, which is the main human pathogen, Non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters (NHPH) are also associated with human diseases, thus raising concern about their zoonotic potential. Veterinarians are considered a risk group for NHPH infections and act as first-line communicators to animal owners about their prophylaxis. Therefore, we aimed to assess the knowledge and perception of veterinarians working in Greece about Helicobacter pylori and NHPH by asking them to participate anonymously in an online 34-question survey. The questionnaire consisted of three sections regarding environmental exposure to Helicobacter spp.; know-how about clinical signs in various species, including personal human experience; and willingness to get updated information about NHPH. Of the 111 respondents, 41.4% had not heard of H. suis (NHPH), and 35.0% were unaware of the species that could be affected. Almost 60.0% of companion animal veterinarians rarely suspect and 20.0% never suspect Helicobacter spp. infections in the case of gastritis. Nevertheless, 41.0% of respondents considered Helicobacter as zoonotic, and 87.0% wanted to receive information via professional channels and brochures. Despite the limited number of respondents and the exploratory nature of our study, as with similar data from Portugal, we emphasize the need to train veterinarians to have a more targeted focus on the zoonotic potential of Helicobacter within a One Health approach. Molecular Survey of Hemopathogens in Dogs, Including Blood Donors, from Central-Western Brazil

Blood transfusions are indispensable in Veterinary Medicine, providing therapeutic support in cases of hematological disorders. Several pathogens can cause disease and/or exacerbate the condition of immunocompromised dogs or those requiring a transfusion. This study aimed to investigate the molecular occurrence of hemopathogens (Bartonella spp., Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., piroplasmids, and hemoplasmas) in blood donor and patient dogs using samples from a clinical veterinary laboratory in Brazil. One hundred blood samples were collected from each group. All dogs tested negative for Bartonella spp. in all performed assays. Among the 100 dogs from the clinical veterinary laboratory, 15% (95% CI: 9.3–23.3) tested positive for Ehrlichia spp., 6% (95% CI: 2.8–12.5) for Anaplasma spp., 3% (95% CI: 1.0–8.5) for Babesia spp., and 2% (95% CI: 0.6–7.0) for hemoplasmas. Blood donor dogs tested positive for hemoplasmas (5%) (95% CI: 2.2–11.2). Additional conventional and real-time PCR assays followed by sequencing confirmed the presence of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, Babesia vogeli, ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum’, and Mycoplasma haemocanis. The molecular detection of E. canis, A. platys, ‘Ca. M. haematoparvum’, and M. haemocanis in dogs from midwestern Brazil reinforces the relevance of molecular tools in diagnosing hemopathogens. This is the first molecular detection of hemoplasmas in canine blood donors from Brazil. This finding indicates their silent circulation and highlights the importance of molecular screening to prevent the worsening of clinical conditions and the risk of turning recipients into new sources of infection.
