Advancements in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) for Advanced Manufacturing

This special issue belongs to the section “Advanced Manufacturing“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the face of evolving industry demands, engineering products are surpassing the limits of traditional mass production systems. The shift toward customized, high-performance products necessitates the ability to make in situ, real-time modifications during the production process. This transition is central to modern product development, where manufacturing is not a static process but a dynamic, responsive one, capable of adapting to new requirements in real time. The development of such next-generation products relies heavily on the integration of advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) techniques and innovative manufacturing processes.

To meet these needs, this Special Issue aims to explore cutting-edge research and innovations in the field of CAD and its integration with advanced manufacturing technologies. In particular, it will focus on how new advancements in CAD can enhance product customization, manufacturing flexibility, and efficiency, enabling industries to deliver tailor-made solutions while overcoming existing manufacturing constraints. The goal is to present state-of-the-art strategies and discuss new tools, methods, and theories that can help shape the future of product design and manufacturing.

The core objective of this Special Issue is to foster a deeper understanding of the interdependencies between CAD modelling and advanced manufacturing techniques. We invite authors to submit high-quality, original research articles that introduce innovative CAD tools, methodologies, and practices, and that analyse their applications in modern manufacturing contexts. These papers should address the challenges and opportunities that arise in CAD systems and manufacturing workflows, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Generative AI and manufacturing approaches;
  • CAD modelling in additive manufacturing;
  • Product lifecycle management and advanced manufacturing;
  • Tracking methods for CAD and manufacturing feature modifications;
  • Integration of CAD with automation systems;
  • Virtual and augmented reality for CAD and manufacturing;
  • Sustainable manufacturing through CAD;
  • Data-driven design for advanced manufacturing;
  • Collaborative and Cloud-based CAD systems for distributed manufacturing.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Machines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
