Special Issue Information

Global agriculture is undergoing a significant transformation in response to the growing challenges of climate change, land degradation, population growth, and food security. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful enabler in this transition, offering the ability to extract meaningful insights from complex and high-volume geospatial, environmental, and socio-economic data. This Special Issue aims to explore how AI-enabled decision support systems (DSSs) can revolutionize sustainable agricultural land use, with a particular focus on ecological balance, resource optimization, and resilient food systems.

We invite interdisciplinary contributions that advance the theory, development, and application of AI-based tools and frameworks to support land use planning and agricultural sustainability. Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the integration of AI with remote sensing, Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, machine learning models, and spatial decision-making systems. We particularly welcome research that demonstrates the effectiveness of AI-driven DSS in real-world agricultural contexts, including case studies, prototypes, and policy-relevant insights.

Key topics of interest include (but are not restricted to):

- AI methodologies for crop suitability analysis and land use planning.

- Machine learning models for soil quality, climate impact, and yield prediction.

- Spatial decision support systems (SDSS) integrating GIS and AI.

- Use of deep learning for satellite or UAVs image classification and land cover mapping.

- AI-enabled early warning systems for land degradation, drought, and pest outbreaks.

- IoT-based data fusion and real-time decision making in precision agriculture.

- Multi-objective optimization models balancing productivity and sustainability.

- Human–AI collaboration and participatory approaches in land governance.

- Ethical, social, and policy implications of AI in agricultural land management.

We look forward to receiving your original research articles and reviews.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Land is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
