Mycological Research in South Korea
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Mycological research in South Korea has developed rapidly, reflecting both the country’s rich biodiversity and the growing recognition of fungi as key players in human health, agriculture, and industry. Early studies emphasized taxonomy and the discovery of edible and medicinal mushrooms, laying the foundation for applied research in food science, fermentation, and agriculture. Over the years, Korean mycologists have significantly advanced fungal systematics, molecular genetics, and ecology, contributing to a deeper understanding of fungal diversity and evolution.
Alongside these foundations, South Korea has become an active hub for translational and applied mycology. Researchers have explored secondary metabolites and fungal enzymes with potential applications in biotechnology, bioremediation, and sustainable industry. At the same time, medical and veterinary mycology has expanded to address global health challenges posed by emerging fungal pathogens, antifungal resistance, and host–pathogen interactions. The establishment of specialized institutes, graduate programs, and international collaborations has further strengthened this field, fostering innovative studies that bridge basic science and practical solutions.
This Special Issue aims to showcase the breadth of mycological research in South Korea, from biodiversity and taxonomy to biotechnology and clinical applications. By highlighting these diverse achievements, we hope to provide an international platform that reflects Korea’s growing contributions to fungal biology and inspires further collaborations to meet ecological, medical, and societal challenges.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Fungi is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
