Next-Generation Offshore Renewables: From Resources to Applications

This special issue belongs to the section “Marine Energy“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The vast potential of offshore renewable energy remains largely untapped, despite decades of research dedicated to developing cost-efficient technologies. Fixed offshore wind turbines have already achieved commercial success and now make substantial contributions to national energy mixes, particularly in regions with shallow continental waters that enable their deployment. In parallel, notable advances have been made in wave and tidal energy through sophisticated numerical modeling, cutting-edge laboratory experimentation, and real-world pilot projects. However, neither of these two technologies has yet reached commercial maturity. More recently, offshore solar energy has attracted growing interest, supported by the technological maturity of photovoltaic modules and significant cost reductions.

Despite the latest research and development efforts, significant challenges persist across the offshore renewable energy sector. These include the need for further cost reductions, improved long-term survivability in harsh marine environments, and new opportunities for hybridization with complementary technologies such as desalination systems and hydrogen production.

This Special Issue, titled “Next-Generation Offshore Renewables: From Resources to Applications,” will showcase the latest developments in the offshore renewable energy landscape. We will address key topics in resource assessment, particularly through the lens of marine spatial planning, as well as innovations in technology development and system integration. We welcome original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and insightful case studies examining any aspect of offshore renewable energy, with encouragement for interdisciplinary contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
