Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The system paradigm, since its beginning, has opened new approaches to solve problems. The holistic approach helps to deal with complex organized challenges. Despite all efforts and models, the shortage of appropriate math methods has been the main dilemma in solving complex problems. When dealing with complex systems, as the most challenging problems, there is a need for innovative new approaches, and artificial intelligence (AI) could be a solution. AI works similarly to the human brain or natural systems, without limitations of capacity and memory, so the existing challenge is that of determining how to bring smartness and intelligence to deal with real-world complex problems. AI could considerably aid interdisciplinary research addressing problems in complex systems.

This Special Issue aims to highlight and present the latest developments in AI dealing with complex systems. AI includes different techniques and algorithms, and any of them would be welcome. The challenge here is that of applying AI to model complex systems for a better world. The application domain could include but is not limited to healthcare, manufacturing, security, collaborative networks, agriculture, economy, micro- and macromanagement, environment, and energy.

This Special Issue seeks interdisciplinary works (mathematics, physics, biology, social sciences, cognitive sciences, etc.) that demonstrate the intersection of complex systems and artificial intelligence. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

  1. AI and dynamical systems;
  2. Complex systems and self-organization;
  3. AI and complex decision problems;
  4. AI in networks;
  5. AI in large-scale systems;
  6. AI in natural systems;
  7. AI and random systems;
  8. AI for complex technology;
  9. AI application in fuzzy environment;
  10. AI application in probabilistic problems;
  11. AI application in simulation and modeling of complex systems;
  12. AI and knowledge acquisition;
  13. AI and deep learning techniques;
  14. Collaborative AI systems;
  15. AI and optimization problems;
  16. Hybrid AI models.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Information is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
