Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide and continue to impose a major clinical and socio-economic burden. Over the last decade, cardiovascular medicine has entered an era in which mechanistic insights from molecular and cellular biology are increasingly shaping prevention, diagnosis and therapy. Atherosclerosis, hypertension, cardiomyopathies, heart failure, arrhythmias and thrombo-inflammatory disorders are now understood as complex, multi-system conditions driven by intertwined processes such as immune activation, endothelial dysfunction, metabolic remodeling, oxidative stress, fibrosis and dysregulated cell–cell communication.

At the same time, technological advances—including single-cell and spatial omics, high-resolution molecular imaging, organoids and iPSC-derived models, CRISPR-based functional genomics and computational systems biology—are transforming how we define disease mechanisms and discover actionable targets. These approaches are enabling the identification of new biomarkers for early risk stratification and therapeutic monitoring, as well as the development of innovative treatment strategies such as RNA-based medicines, gene and cell therapies, targeted biologics and advanced delivery platforms.

This Special Issue aims to provide a focused forum for high-quality research and authoritative reviews spanning the molecular basis of cardiovascular disease and the translation of mechanistic knowledge into treatment strategies. We welcome submissions that connect discovery science with clinical relevance, including studies that integrate multi-omics, experimental disease models, patient-derived datasets and translational endpoints.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis, plaque instability and atherothrombosis
  • Endothelial dysfunction, vascular inflammation and vascular aging
  • Immunometabolism, oxidative stress and mitochondrial biology in CVD
  • Hypertension and cardio–renal–metabolic signaling pathways
  • Cardiac remodeling, fibrosis and extracellular matrix biology
  • Heart failure phenotypes and metabolic remodeling
  • Arrhythmogenesis and ion-channel/signal transduction networks
  • Genetic architecture of CVD, epigenetics and non-coding RNAs
  • Extracellular vesicles, circulating biomarkers and liquid biopsy approaches
  • Molecular imaging and advanced phenotyping for precision cardiology
  • Emerging therapies: Targeted biologics, RNA therapeutics, gene/cell therapy and novel delivery systems
  • Computational biology, AI and digital approaches for risk prediction and therapeutic optimization

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
