6G-Enabled Telepresence and Metaverse Communications: From Vision to Reality

This special issue belongs to the section “Network Virtualization and Edge/Fog Computing“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The convergence of 6G networks, telepresence, and the Metaverse is poised to redefine human interaction by merging physical and virtual worlds through ultra-fast, intelligent, and immersive communication systems. This Special Issue explores cutting-edge research, architectures, and applications that leverage 6G’s capabilities, such as terahertz communications, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, and AI-native network orchestration, to enable seamless telepresence and immersive Metaverse experiences. It aims to highlight innovations in real-time holographic communication, tactile Internet, digital twins, edge intelligence, and networked extended reality (XR). Emphasis will also be placed on security, privacy, interoperability, and sustainability challenges within these hyper-connected environments. By bridging theory and practice, this issue invites contributions that demonstrate how 6G technologies can transform sectors including education, healthcare, smart manufacturing, and entertainment—bringing the vision of fully immersive, intelligent, and interactive digital worlds closer to reality.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

(1) 6G Architectures for Immersive Communication:

  • 6G-enabled telepresence frameworks and architectures;
  • Terahertz (THz) and visible light (LiFi/VLC) communications for ultra-high data rates;
  • Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS/IRS) for adaptive and dynamic environments;
  • AI-native and semantic communication models for 6G Metaverse networks.

(2) Telepresence and Holographic Communication:

  • Real-time holographic beamforming and rendering techniques;
  • Tactile Internet and haptic feedback systems for remote interaction;
  • Low-latency multi-sensory communication for immersive collaboration;
  • Edge intelligence for real-time XR/VR/AR streaming and rendering.

(3) Metaverse Technologies and Applications:

  • Digital twin integration and synchronization across physical–virtual spaces;
  • Cloud-edge orchestration for distributed Metaverse platforms;
  • AI-driven content generation and adaptive environment modeling;
  • Interoperability, scalability, and standardization of Metaverse ecosystems.

(4) Security, Privacy, and Trust in 6G-Enabled Metaverse:

  • Blockchain-based trust management and digital identity verification;
  • Quantum-resilient and privacy-preserving communication protocols;
  • Secure digital asset ownership and decentralized governance.

(5) Cross-Domain Applications and Future Directions:

  • 6G-powered telehealth and remote surgery using holographic interfaces;
  • Smart education, digital workplaces, and industrial Metaverse applications;
  • Energy-efficient and sustainable designs for large-scale immersive systems;
  • Ethical, societal, and regulatory implications of 6G-driven Metaverse evolution.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Future Internet is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
