Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Active packaging is an innovative approach to maintain or prolong the shelf life of food products while ensuring their quality, safety, and integrity. As defined in the European regulation (EC) No 450/2009, active packaging comprises packaging systems that interact with the food in such a way as to “deliberately incorporate components that would release or absorb substances into or from the packaged food or the environment surrounding the food”.

During recent decades, active packaging has been a key focus of research and development for various research groups, and different active packaging technologies have been developed. Several studies have shown the huge potential for use of such technologies to increase the shelf life of foodstuffs and improve their qualities. Despite the tremendous research done in this field, only very few of these technologies have been implemented successfully in commercial food packaging systems. Developments in the area of nanomaterials as well as novel material processing methods may further improve the active packaging technologies and pave the way for their introduction into the market.

This Special Issue encourages authors to submit cutting edge original research articles or comprehensive review papers presenting recent developments in the area of active packaging as well as the novel processing technologies used for the production of active packaging materials. Papers that address the challenges to overcome for the successful introduction of active packaging products into the market are also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Market implementation of active and intelligent packaging (AIP) technologies specifically for fiber-based food packaging can be hindered by various factors. This paper highlights those from a social, economic, environmental, and legislative point of view, and elaborates upon the following aspects mainly related to interactions among food packaging value chain stakeholders: (i) market drivers that affect developments, (ii) the gap between science and industry, (iii) the gap between legislation and practice, (iv) cooperation between the producing stakeholders within the value chain, and (v) the gap between the industry and consumers. We perceive these as the most influential aspects in successful market implementation at a socioeconomic level. The findings are supported by results from quantitative studies analyzing consumer buying expectations about active and intelligent packaging (value perception of packaging functions, intentions to purchase AIP, and willingness to pay more) executed in 16 European countries. Finally, in this paper, we discuss approaches that could direct future activities in the field towards industrial implementation. Full article
