Medicine Food Homology-Based Functional Products for the Management of Chronic Metabolic Diseases: Mechanisms and Applications
This special issue belongs to the section “Food Nutrition“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The integration of food and medicine—known as medicine food homology (MFH)—has become a promising strategy for the prevention and adjunct treatment of chronic metabolic diseases, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia. In recent years, MFH-based functional products have attracted considerable attention due to their natural origin, safety profile, and multi-target efficacy. With the growing understanding of the gut microbiota’s role in host metabolism, many MFH ingredients have been shown to modulate gut microbial composition and activity, thereby exerting systemic health effects. Moreover, the application of systems biology tools such as network pharmacology, metabolomics, and gut microbiome analysis has further advanced the mechanistic exploration of MFH materials in metabolic disease modulation. This Special Issue aims to highlight recent advances in the development, functional evaluation, and mechanistic interpretation of MFH-based functional foods for managing chronic metabolic disorders. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and short communications focusing on the following:
- Novel MFH formulations and functional food products;
- Modulation of gut microbiota by MFH materials;
- Molecular mechanisms uncovered by network pharmacology and multi-omics;
- Preclinical and clinical studies on MFH applications in metabolic disease.
We invite researchers working in nutrition, traditional medicine, microbiome science, and functional food development to contribute to this Special Issue, titled "Medicine Food Homology-Based Functional Products for the Management of Chronic Metabolic Diseases: Mechanisms and Applications."

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Foods is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
