Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and various incidents of geopolitical unrest, higher education institutions around the world are facing a variety of challenges. As universities undergo profound transformation, higher education governance and management must continually evolve. This Special Issue on "Advancements in the Governance and Management of Higher Education" seeks to examine the various approaches, frameworks, or innovative strategies that emerge to ensure efficient and sustainable governance and management of these institutions.

In this Special Issue, we aim to achieve the following:

- Address the transformative influence of technology on governance and management in higher education;

- Analyze the increasing role played by institutional research in data-driven decision making;

- Describe how inclusive governance encourages participation, transparency, diversity, equity, inclusion, and/or shared decision making;

- Understand how universities face the dual challenges of social responsibility and maintaining economic viability;

- Discuss the evolving leadership and management philosophies towards upholding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and/or University Social Responsibilities (USRs);

- Clarify quality assurance and accreditation processes to meet the evolving needs of online education, microcredentials, and innovative pedagogies;

- Provide best practices for effective and sustainable transnational higher education, cross-border higher education, and capacity building in higher education.

Lastly, in addition to the previously mentioned aims, we also welcome contributions on topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Leadership paradigms and accountability;
  • Inclusive governance models;
  • Teacher evaluation, tenureship, and promotion;
  • Innovative decision-making processes;
  • Quality assurance and recognition mechanisms;
  • International collaboration and mobility;
  • Faculty empowerment and academic freedom;
  • Student-centric approaches;
  • The crisis preparedness and resilience of higher education institutions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Education Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.

This study presents an innovative approach to support educational administration, focusing on the optimization of university admission processes using feature selection algorithms. The research addresses the challenges of concept drift, outlier treatment, and the weighting of key factors in admission criteria. The proposed methodology identifies the optimal set of features and assigns weights to the selection criteria that demonstrate the strongest correlation with academic performance, thereby contributing to improved educational management by optimizing decision-making processes. The approach incorporates concept change management and outlier detection in the preprocessing stage while employing multivariate feature selection techniques in the processing stage. Applied to the admission process of engineering students at a public Chilean university, the methodology considers socioeconomic, academic, and demographic variables, with curricular advancement as the objective. The process generated a subset of attributes and an application score with predictive capabilities of 83% and 84%, respectively. The results show a significantly greater association between the application score and academic performance when the methodology’s weights are used, compared to the actual weights. This highlights the increased predictive power by accounting for concept drift, outliers, and shared information between variables. Full article
