Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The 4th International Conference on Applications of Optics and Photonics, AOP2019, will be held in Lisbon (Portugal), 31 May–4 June, 2019. Since its first edition in 2011, the AOP conferences provided an excellent opportunity to, in an open friendly environment, foster the establishment of the widest range of cooperation projects and relationships with colleagues and institutions involved in pure and applied optics and photonics research from all around the world. Open to contributions from all domains of optics and photonics and all application fields, with this conference we expect to review the state-of-the-art in these subjects and to foresee and discuss the future of research in optics and photonics and its application. Thirty plenary and keynote lectures by world-renowned researchers in all fields of optics and photonics and applications set the standard of quality of a varied and exciting scientific program.

We are honored to serve as Guest Editors of this Special Issue to be published in Coatings that will contain papers submitted and accepted at AOP2019 on the widest range of issues related to optical coatings and coatings and thin films of interest in optics and photonics and on optical characterization and processing of coatings. Its main scope is to provide a timely and broad collection of the most innovative topics discussed during the latest edition of the conference. We warmly invite researchers to submit their contributions, both original research articles and review papers, to this Special Issue. Topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Optical coatings
  • Coatings for optics and photonics
  • Coatings and thin films for optical sensors
  • Coatings for ophthalmic optics
  • Coatings for space optics
  • Nano coatings and structures for photonics
  • Thin films

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

There are numerous applications for thin films based chemical pH sensors, in such areas as biomedical, military, environmental, food, and consumer products. pH sensitive films fabricated through the ionic self-assembled monolayers technique were made of polyelectrolyte polyallylamine hydrochloride and the water-soluble organic dye molecule Direct Yellow 4. The films were monitored in various environmental conditions and for selected periods, at temperatures varying between −13.7 and 46.2 °C. Absorbance measurements and atomic force microscopy performed before and after thermal treatment indicate that for optimized thickness and composition the films maintain their functionality and are not affected by long-term exposure at these temperatures. The influence of O2 flow rate on the compositional, optical and electrical characteristics of silicon oxide (SiOx) thin films (x < 2) were studied in this work. The SiOx thin films were obtained by pulsed direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering (PMS) onto n-type Si wafers (and also on glass substrates) at a vacuum of 3 × 10−3 Pa. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) was used to check the compositional elements of deposited films and its oxidized states were analysed via Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The optical properties of as-deposited SiOx thin films were investigated from transmittance measurements at room temperature in the wavelength range of 250–800 nm. The obtained data reveal that the Urbach energy (a measure of the band tail extension, Eu) decreased from about 523 to 172 meV as the rate of oxygen gas flow increased. On the contrary, the optical energy band-gap (Eg) increased from 3.9 to 4.2 eV. Conduction and valance band positions (relative to the normal hydrogen electrode) were also evaluated. The observed behavior is probably associated with the degree of disorder and defects presented in the as-deposited SiOx thin films, probably due to the presence of newly inserted oxidized OnSiHy species resulting from some contamination with water vapor desorbed from the walls of the deposition vacuum chamber. After deposition of a gold top electrode, the electrical characteristics of the fabricated Au/SiOx/n-Si system (i.e., a metal/insulator/semiconductor structure—MIS) were studied via characteristic I-V curves and their dependence upon the O2 flow rate are reported. It was observed that the Au/SiOx/n-Si structure behaves like a Schottky-diode exhibiting a very good diode rectifying performance with a rectification ratio of at least 300 and up to 104, which refers to the samples produced with the lower and higher O2 flow rates, respectively. It was also found that the O2 flow rate influences the rectifying performance of the SiOx/n-structures since both the diode ideality factor, n, and the diode series-resistance, RS decreases with the increase of O2 content, possibly reflecting a closer approximation to a full stoichiometric condition. Nowadays, there is increasing concern in transportation engineering about the use of techniques less harmful to the environment and also about road safety. Heterogeneous photocatalysis based on the application of semiconductor materials onto asphalt mixtures is a promising technology because it can mitigate air pollution and road accidents. The functionalized asphalt mixtures with photocatalytic capability can degrade pollutants, such as damaging gases and oil/grease adsorbed on their surface, from specific reactions triggered by sunlight photons, providing significant environmental and social benefits. In this article, a review of photocatalysis applied in asphalt mixtures is presented. The most important characteristics related to the functionalization of asphalt mixtures for photocatalytic applications and their corresponding characterization are presented, and the achieved main results are also discussed.
