The Emerging Role of Molecular and Serum Biomarkers in Osteoporosis

Dear Colleagues,

The diagnosis and prognosis of osteoporosis have traditionally been based on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements obtained through techniques like dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and the evaluation of clinical risk factors. However, these methods alone do not fully capture the complexity of bone metabolism or the dynamic nature of disease progression. Recent research has emphasized the emerging role of molecular and serum biomarkers as valuable adjuncts in the clinical assessment of osteoporosis. These biomarkers, which include proteins, enzymes, and other molecules involved in bone formation and resorption processes, provide critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of bone turnover. For instance, markers such as procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX) reflect bone formation and degradation rates, respectively. By integrating biomarker data with traditional diagnostics, clinicians can better evaluate fracture risk, detect early changes in bone health before significant bone loss occurs, and assess the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. In addition to their diagnostic value, these biomarkers hold promise as prognostic indicators, enabling more personalized treatment plans and potentially predicting treatment response and long-term outcomes. The use of molecular and serum biomarkers is therefore transforming osteoporosis management, providing a more comprehensive understanding of bone health and paving the way for improved patient care and therapeutic strategies. We invite all colleagues to submit their manuscripts (full papers, reviews, or notes) in open access to this Special Issue. We encourage the dissemination of this invitation to any colleagues who may be interested.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Current Issues in Molecular Biology is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
